Lionhead's Peter Molyneux has spoken out about the need for a core Kinect game - and how it's the core that needs Kinect more than anyone else.Touting Fable: The Journey, the new Kinect exclusive game from Lionhead, Molyneux addressed questions whether there was any need for a core title on Microsoft's motion controller."Of course there is," Molyneux told Eurogamer at Microsoft's Spring Showcase. "Those are the people that need new experiences more than anyone else. I get crazy passionate about this - if we're not careful, we're going to bore our core gamers to death. How much bigger can our explosions get to entertain them?""We're doing the same thing that Hollywood's doing with action movies. We're inventing a formula, and we're repeating it over and over again, and we're grabbing every penny from our consumers and not bothering to think about something different. And they're the people that need something different."They're our fans, and this is their hobby, man! We can't be lazy! We can't back away from creative inventiveness now, just because it costs a bit more money. Now's the time to double down on that."Is Call of Duty really it? Is that all this industry really is? If it is, then you should just shift me off to the mental asylum now."Molyneux also addressed questions about the recent job posting for someone with MMO skills - a posting that's fuelled speculation that a Fable MMO could be imminent."I don't know what you're talking about - that scares me," replied an untypically coy Molyneux. "It's not relevant to the Journey, but it could be relevant to something in the future."Lionhead used Microsoft's Spring Showcase to reveal Fable Heroes - a smaller game that arose from an in-house creative day. Molyneux was non-committal when asked whether Lionhead would, like Double Fine, look to making further smaller games - although he alluded to to an imminent big year for both Microsoft and Lionhead."We try and have a creative day every year, but it's hard to have a creative day when you've got a launch year," he told Eurogamer. "Everyone's so obsessed. I've got to be careful with what I say, but at the moment we could be close to a l

    aunch year for certain titles."

    Article Preview

Nintendo decided to let us all in on what's happening on the eShop in the next couple of months, and we couldn't be happier with the advance notice. This Thursday, 3DS owners (even non-Ambassadors) can buy the NES Punch-Out!! -- the Mr. Dream version, of course. It'll be followed a week later by a trio of Sega Game Gear games, including Shinobi, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Dragon Crystal.

There's also new new stuff coming to eShop. Ketzal's Corridors, coming "soon," seems to be the game known in Japan as Speedthru, a 3D puzzle game like the Wii's ThruSpace -- in which players rotate Tetris-like shapes to go through oncoming walls. In April, the DS homebrew drawing app Colors! becomes a for-real, official thing on 3DS as Colors! 3D. Other releases include Fun! Fun! Minigolf Touch! and a demo for Rhythm Thief. Find the full schedule after the break.

    2. Apple iPad

Wednesday March 7th at 6:00pm GMT – that’s when we’ll finally find out what Apple has in store for the third generation of its iPad.
There are many sites devoted to nothing but Apple rumours, but for those without a spare two weeks to catch up with every morsel of information, here’s a run-down of what may (or may not) be on the cards for the new machine.
The only sure-fire bet is that the iPad 3 will have what Apple calls a ‘Retina Screen’. That means that, as with the iPhone 4 and 4S, pixel density will be so high that the human eye will be unable to see them individually, meaning rich and detailed visuals.
Specifically, you can be almost certain the resolution will be 2048x1536, taking it beyond 1080p territory.
It’s also a sure bet that the new A6 chip will be the brains behind the brawn. Whether or it will be a dual-core or quad-core version, however, seems more uncertain.
You can also expect the almost prerequisite camera upgrade, with the front-facing lens and sensor likely to be upgraded to HD quality. LTE network compatibility is a likelihood, too.
Beyond that we’re heading into more speculative waters.
Siri functionality is very possible, making the iPad 3 the first device aside from the iPhone 4S to feature the phone-activated assistant. But don’t expect any radical visual makeovers in terms of hardware – though speculation persists about the removal of the physical Home button.
We can also anticipate a global launch in key territories this month, perhaps as early as next week.

    2. Playstation Vita News

Industry sources have told MCV that very nearly 50 per cent of all Vita hardware sold in the UK on launch week was purchased in a GAME or Gamestation store.
That, of course, is despite the fact that the chains were not carrying Ubisoft’s Vita launch line-up of Rayman Origins, Lumines, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Dungeon Hunter and Asphalt Injection.
“As much as the world wants to bash GAME at the moment, you can’t escape the fact that if you’re launching new hardware or a big game there’s no better launch partner than GAME,” a publisher exec admitted to MCV in an off the record capacity.
“Obviously its position is threatened by not carrying some new games, and with every new release they miss the problem gets worse. But if Microsoft or Sony announced a new machine tomorrow or Nintendo surprised us with an early Wii U release they’d be mad not do whatever it took to get GAME on board.”
The source asserted that, in its opinion, “there’s no better way of getting games and consoles to gamers in the UK” and said that in his experience a game launch coordinated with GAME was nearly always more effective than other options, such as a supermarket entrance display or national print ad campaign.
“Sony owes GAME a lot for getting Vita off the ground in the UK,” the source added. “Some other publishers would do well to recognise this.”

AC3's creative director talks about the changes his team is making in the franchise
After a divergence with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the franchise is finally moving to another era with Assassin's Creed III. After two years in development, Ubisoft has finally taken the wraps off the title. In a pair of interviews with GameInformer, Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson spoke about his team's hopes for the game.
"It's a scary thing to say, but I think the goal was to look next-gen on current-gen," Hutchinson said in GameInformer's print interview. "We have this goal to do something completely new, but still remain true to the franchise. People want that familiarity, but also something radically new. So we have the familiar pillars of fighting, navigation, and social stealth, but brand new environments and brand new ways to use them and extend them."
In his video interview, Hutchinson talked about the two areas his team really attempted to change with the series' newest entry.
"I come from a design background so I tend to looks at things in terms of what we can do design-wise. For me there were two things, the first of which is how we layer missions and how we structure the game design. I wanted to get away from the very linear nature of going from mission to mission that was in the previous game. Obviously, the story is this huge background in the game, but I think that having other opportunities in the world, other things to do in terms of side-tasks, the notion of player opportunity and letting people structure their own experience, was something I really wanted to work on," he explained.
"Also some core mechanical stuff: I think we can make a much better [fighting system], so we've been ripping that apart and rebuilding it from the ground up. Those two things were the big chucks that I wanted to do."
Hutchinson attributes the shift in the franchise's setting to a desire to bring something brand-new to the series after the amazing cities in Brotherhood and Revelations.
"We wanted to offer something that's really fresh. I always found it funny that the one thing you couldn't climb in AC is the one thing I've climbed in real life. There are plenty of games with forests, but the forests are just collections of assets; you walk around them. The fact that it's a tree doesn't matter. Whereas if we can make trees and the wilderness as much a playground as Altair and Ezio made cities, then it's huge," he said.
Assassin's Creed III is scheduled for an October 30/31 release in North America and Europe, on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC. Another version of the title is in development for Wii U.

Commander Shepard's epic five-year battle draws to a close, but has BioWare silenced its critics?

Where do you start with a game like Mass Effect 3? The final act of an epic story that has taken note of dozens of narrative choices, both big and small, across three substantial games. Where every player has their own version of its force-of-nature protagonist, Commander Shepard, and expects the conclusion to the story to feel satisfying on both micro and macro levels - from individual relationships, to the fate of the entire galaxy.
According to virtually every existing review the only place to start is 2007, with the first Mass Effect. Time may not have been kind to BioWare's ambitious entrance into that world, and its streamlined sequel may have been criticised for dumbing-down, but no matter how many game modes EA adds to welcome in new players for the close of the trilogy, the glory of Mass Effect 3 at its best cannot be grasped by a first-timer.
You can tell Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead had a rewarding experience, and not just because of the 10 sitting at the bottom of the text. Tellingly, Whitehead deploys a first-person anecdote to book-end his glowing review - a tactic often used by critics who like a game so much that a breakdown of its mechanics, story and atmosphere just aren't enough to convey their excitement.
In the context of Mass Effect 3, however, it can be read as a confirmation that BioWare has delivered on one of the loftiest creative promises of this console generation.

During his GDC talk on Bejeweled Blitz, PopCap's franchise manager Giordano Bruno Contestabile hinted at the Apple news that everyone is expecting, the reveal of the iPad HD.
"I think that tomorrow every game developer will have to scramble to get a new higher res version of their Apple games on the store," he said, while discussing plans for the premium version of Bejeweled.
"It will be very important to do so, and that's something we absolutely want to address."
GDC is currently wild with rumours about the Apple event tomorrow, with the iPad HD at the centre of discussions.
The comments came as Contestabile was talking about the success of Bejeweled Blitz, and the challenges of releasing and managing a premium and a freemium product alongside each other.
He also compared the game's performance on iOS and Facebook, with surprising results.
"Every single important metric on iOS is performing 2X what it does on Facebook," he said.
This is despite the fact that the iOS version (which was launched some time after the Facebook version) has 33 users for every 100 Facebook users.
"People spend on average an hour playing Blitz on iPhone. In retention, percentage of paying users, they're all double."
He said this was partly due to the omnipresent nature of mobile, and gave out a statistic that 20 per cent of mobile gaming happens on the toilet, but also the bite size nature of the game. He also suggested that Apple's billing system was a crucial factor, every player already has a credit card attached to the game, making smaller purchases easier.
Bejeweled Blitz currently has around 10.8 million monthly active users on Facebook and is at number 13 in the chart for top grossing iPhone apps. Contestabile predicted this would rise to top five tomorrow with the release of a new promotion for the game.

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Nintendo's 3DS handheld has passed 4.5 million sales in the United States since its launch last March, the company has announced.
It means that, despite its slow start, 3DS sold almost twice as many units in its first year on shelves as its predecessor: first-year DS sales totalled 2.3 million. 3DS has brought in $1.2 billion in revenue, compared to DS's $540 million.
Nintendo Of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said: "Nintendo 3DS closes its first year with a lengthy list of accomplishments but we're still just scratching the surface.
"With a massive lineup of first and thirdparty games, and more on the way, a budding library of entertainment options and an engaged and growing installed base, Nintendo 3DS has an incredibly bright future. We're just getting started, but this platform is built for the long haul."

Trade association UKIE has published the UK's first ever digital videogame sales chart.
The body has been hard at work on its digital chart, which is currently in beta, since 2010. The first published chart collates sales of PC games through digital channels in January, shared by 25 companies "proactively engaged in the selling and distribution of digital videogame products."
Between them, the group of 25 hold 80 per cent of the boxed PC game market, but UKIE still has much work ahead to get more companies on side; the below chart is only believed to represent 40 per cent of total sales of downloadable PC games.
UKIE CEO Jo Twist said: "We are delighted to reveal the UK's first digital chart based on real sales data. This is a watershed moment for our industry, but it is only the first step in capturing the full digital market.
"There is still a lot of work to be done, and we need more data, but we felt that the market would benefit from seeing that this project is very much on course."

When Chaotic Moon Labs debuted the Kinect-powered Board of Awesomeness — and its mind-reading offspring, the Board of Imagination — that was apparently just a preview of a more practical product the company had in the works. Grocery store chain Whole Foods recently gave a demonstration of Chaotic Moon's latest device, which uses the same technology in a self-propelled shopping cart. The 'Smarter Cart,' as it's been named, can detect what items are placed in it, match those to a shopping list, and even follow shoppers around the store on its own.
