    News from the Goat Store

In 2000, when the GOAT Store was being founded, one of the first unique products that was created was the JAMMA Joystick line up. Featured were joysticks for the Atari 2600 and Jaguar systems which used real arcade joysticks and buttons to give players the best arcade control experience ever for home consoles!

While the original line of joysticks was very popular, as the GOAT Store grew, the joystick line up ended up having to be stopped due to the fact that creating these joysticks takes hours and hours of time, time that the founders of the GOAT Store didn't have as they increased inventory, started GOAT Store Publishing and hosted gaming events.

There is some great news for big time gamers who love the feel of arcades because the JAMMA Joystick line up is being relaunched with new models for many different systems! The new JAMMA Joystick line up is being handled by video game veteran Chris "Kamino" Kamin, who has created and made multiple joysticks for his own use as well as done countless system console hacks to upgrade and improve the performance of his classic gaming systems.

"I love making joysticks that the hardcore gamer will love!" stated Chris. "My favorite games tend to be shmups, and if you know those types of games, you know that you need a great joystick for them. Most of the joysticks that have been released for the mass market are made with cheap parts and feel horrible. I wanted to have an option for the market who will only settle for something that equals the feel of the arcade."

JAMMA Joysticks are built using high quality parts which are manufactured for use in arcade machines using the JAMMA standard. The new JAMMA Joystick line up will feature joysticks for the following systems at launch: Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Nintendo NES, Nintendo SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Turbografx-16 and even the Vectrex. While the official launch of the joystick line is October 15th, the GOAT Store and Chris Kamin have already opened 'pre-orders' for most of the models. On October 15th, when they officially launch, the site will have extensive information on them and how you can become the owner of one of the outstanding JAMMA Joysticks that Chris will be creating. ...

It's been over twenty years since Al Pacino, Oliver Stone, and Brian DePalma gave us one of Hollywood's classic crime lords (and set the benchmark for f-bomb usage in a film). Given Rockstar's success with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, it's not surprising that someone decided to cash in on the original coked out vision of 80s Miami. Enter Sierra and Radical Entertainment's Scarface: The World is Yours, an extension of the movie that finds Tony Montana very much alive and out for revenge on the cock-a-roaches who destroyed his drug empire. Reviews suggest that the amount of enjoyment you get out of this game will depend on your patience with its mission structure. Tony doesn't break his balls for anyone, but some of the side missions in Scarface just might break yours.

IGN (87/100) thought Tony's rage mode was the balls: "By performing a number of 'ballsy' moves, you'll fill the Balls meter. Targeting certain body parts (kidney, head, arms, groin, etc.) will earn you Balls, and taunting someone after you kill them will earn you even more. It's a great system that works almost flawlessly."

Game Informer (85/100) felt immersed in the power struggles of a drug kingpin: "Unlike Grand Theft Auto, in which you're frequently at the mercy of powers much greater than yourself, Scarface allows you to blaze your own path to greatness. The epic scope and the sheer amount of money at stake give Scarface a sense of urgency that few games in this genre have achieved."

GameSpot (64/100) was looking for more freedom of movement: "The developers accomplished the task of bringing Tony Montana back to life. But by taking the focus off of the gameplay elements that you'd want in an open-city game and putting it more on the game's bland mission design and all the dull side tasks you'll have to do to earn a reputation, Scarface doesn't play to its potential strengths." ...

Yesterday GameStop's Chris Olivera told me that somewhere between 28,800 and 57,600 Playstation 3s were pre-ordered at their stores 3,600 stores.

I had a chance to speak with Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesman Dave Karraker last night about the sales. (He said he called because he felt sorry for me and my gimpy broken hand. ) Karraker said they heard within minutes of the nationwide GameStop sell-outs and that they were very happy with the news.

"It reconfirms the excitement and anticipation that we've known since we first discuss the PlayStation 3," he said. "We're just pleased to see that the reaction from the consumer is as strong as we anticipated it would be. It helps to validate everything we have been saying up to this point."

While he wouldn't tell me the break-down of which chains were getting what in the way of Playstation 3s, simple math shows that if Sony comes through on their 400,000 console promise to North America, that there are still more than 340,000 left to buy. ...

Nottingham, famous for men in tights, is now about to be famous (in the circles that count, of course) for something else: videogame cultural celebration. Yes! Why rob the rich and give to the poor when you could be in a videogames-themed pub quiz with the luscious Lorne Lanning and infamous Ian Livingstone?

GameCity is a new festival starting in two weeks in Nottingham, England. The organisers have chosen to go the cosy route: there are game rants held over curry and poppadums, and cake-and-tea parties (Sonic's birthday party), pub quizzes, plus industry giants dropping by to talk up their new stuff - hell, I'll just list a few choice topics from the long and sparkling list:

    Grumpy Old Games Industry

Live Moaning in an Indian Restaurant, with Ian Livingstone, Dave Doak and Andrew Eades moaning at Keith Stuart from the Guardian Games Blog.

Richard Jacques Live at St Mary's

Legendary SEGA composer plays his greatest hits candle-lit in a 14th Century Church.
    [Can you say OMG? -A]

Lorne Lanning: The Appetite for Escape

Oddworld visionary has some VERY exciting news to break, say the organisers...

    Everybody Dies

The lads from Introversion, makers of Darwinia, on their new game DefCon.

Did I mention the fest is being opened by Lord Puttnam, our videogame-playing aristo? Jack Thompson can continue with his red-faced, spittle-spraying invective, but over the pond they're probably playing GTA in Buck Palace, by now. Go get on up to Nottingham, and have some fun.

Despite report to the contrary, GameStop will not be the only retailer to get playable Wii demo units before the launch of the new console.

Nintendo of America finally got back to me today on the issue:

Playable Wii setups will be available at a variety of retail outlets. We expect that anyone who wants to try Wii will be able to through multiple different methods. In addition to retail outlets, Wii will be playable at a number of mall tours throughout the country, the nationwide Nintendo Fusion Tour and other grass-roots consumer events.
After a bit more badgering on my part, Nintendo clarified that retailers will either receive a traditional pre-built, self-contained interactive kiosk with a TV, Wii and controllers or just the Wii and controllers, which they will then need to set up themselves with their own television.

GameStop once more proves that they are the kings of hyperbole. ...

Source: Straight out of the Xbox Live Pipeline, a Microsoft-owned Flash-based site.

What we heard: Back in August, unconfirmed warnings were issued that Microsoft might charge people money to advance in Q Entertainment's upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title, Lumines Live! Earlier today, it appeared those reports might have been totally off base, as Microsoft's Xbox Live Pipeline site had a listing for Lumines Live! that indicated the game itself was "FREE."

But just as the pitchforks and torches were being put away, GameSpot editors noticed the site also gave Lumines Live ! the rarely seen rating of EC for Early Childhood. While a toddler could possibly come of age in the time it takes a game of Lumines to ramp up in difficulty, this sounded a little suspect. It was especially suspicious given that the Entertainment Software Rating Board gave the original Lumines (which unlike the Xbox 360 version does not feature video of Madonna undulating in the background), a more restrictive rating of E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

An inquiry to Microsoft yielded answers to all our questions.

The official story: "The information posted about Lumines Live on XboxLivePipeline.com is inaccurate and we apologize for any confusion. Lumines will be available later this fall on Xbox Live Arcade and more details will be shared closer to its launch. However, the title will not be free and the rating is still pending."--A Microsoft spokesperson.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus. Keep the pitchforks at the ready. ...

The onslaught of arcade games on Xbox Live Arcade continues tonight, as Namco's cabinet classic Dig Dug debuts on the online service as part of Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays.

Beginning at 1 a.m. on October 11, gamers can download the game for 400 Marketplace points ($5). The new game comes with the requisite "enhanced graphics," HD support in 720p and 480p, a dozen achievements to earn, and online leaderboards.

Dig Dug sees gamers digging into the earth to eliminate enemies, armed only with a pump. The objective of the game is to clear each board of enemies by shooting them with a harpoon and inflating them until they explode. Dig Dug can also cause rocks to fall and crush multiple bad guys for bonus points. ...

Although Nintendo skipped the Tokyo Game Show, Japan-based Nintendo fans will have an opportunity to see what the big N has been working on at a series of shows planned for November. The event, which was announced on Nintendo's Web site today, will be called Nintendo World 2006. This name recalls both the Nintendo World Touch DS! event held across Japan prior to the DS launch in 2004, and Nintendo's old Space World shows, which haven't been held since 2001.

The event will take place November 3 and 12 in Nagoya and Osaka, respectively. The event will also visit the Makuhari Messe, the very site of last month's Tokyo Game Show and a previous Space World site, for two days on November 25 and 26. There is no admission charge. Visitors will be treated to hands-on Wii demonstrations and sneak peeks of the newest DS titles. ...
