An EB Games employee sends word that the company, in conjunction with Sony, has launched a training website that is meant to get their sales people up to speed on all the Playstation 3 has to offer.

Most of the information on the site is already known, but there are a few tid-bits of note. First the page has this to say about PSP connectivity with the PS3:

The HDD will become a storage space for the massive amounts of media you will be sharing with your PSP (movies, music, TV shows, game content.).
That's right, they list TV shows, music and movies, which has me hoping that the PS3 will have the ability to stream television, music and movies directly to your PSP live over WiFi. That would be sooooo sweet.

There's also a bit on the site about Sony's online service for the PS3. Something we know next to nothing about.

Unfortunately, the information is presented in a laundry list. Instead of trying to figure it out and risk getting it wrong, I'm just going to present it here.

    _PS3 ONLINE_ • *Communication/Community:* • *Voice/Video Chat* • *Messaging* • *Lobby/Matchmaking* • *Score/Ranking* • *Friend List/Avatar* • *Game data upload/download
    • *Commerce: *
    • *Shop (accessible from inside games)*
    • *Content download*
    • *Micro payment*
    • *Subscription*
    • *Entitlement (user access rights) management

A couple of things pop out to me. It sounds like it's going to offer just about everything that the Xbox 360's Live offers, though it's not clear what the interface will be like. I'm not too happy about that word subscription in that second batch of descriptors. And why are they calling Entitilements "user access rights"? I thought they were supposed to be like achievments, or did I miss something?

Well Sony only has a month and a half left to explain PSP conncectivity and PS3 online to us. I expect the info to hit something in the next few weeks. ...

Microsoft's Peter Moore must have been on the shandies last night X06 post-conference party as he's clearly on form the day after.

When we asked if Moore sees the Wii as a competitor or compliment to Xbox 360, he told CVG, "I've gone on record any times in the past as being an admirer of the innovation Nintendo brings and the infamous Wii60 revolution seems to be growing like a trade union. You can buy a 360 and Wii and still have 50 quid spare.

"The question for gamers will be 'is owning a 360 enough of an experience?' I can see dual platform ownership (depending on the country) as high as 40 percent, 360 and Wii. But it's all speculative as both Sony and Nintendo have yet to even release their consoles. We'll have to wait and see what the consumer thinks. How innovative your shoulder feels after an hour, we'll have to see."

He added, "The Wii looks like a unique experience and I say even Nintendo doesn't know what they have on their hands yet." ...

At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo unveiled its "Playing is Believing" motto for the Wii, with the idea being that if gamers tried the console out, they'd be more eager to buy the machine. Now it seems as though Sony is adopting the same idea.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America COO Jack Tretton said that 15,000 PlayStation 3 demonstration kiosks will be deployed to American and Canadian retailers over the holiday season. By contrast, only 3,000 demo kiosks were used for the PlayStation 2 launch.

The cost of the operation will be $30 million, reports Bloomberg. There's no indication whether or not that price tag includes the costs of the PS3 units themselves.

"Once the consumers get their hands on a PS3 and understand what's under the hood, I think price will not be a factor in the decision-making process," Tretton told the news service. ...

Citing sister publication Official PlayStation Magazine as its source, 1Up today is reporting that Bethesda Softworks' PC and Xbox 360 open-world role-playing game is headed for both the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 3. The article states that the PS3 edition of the game will include new content, including the introduction of the Knights of the Nine, a new faction that players will be able to join, much as they would the Fighter's Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. The PS3 version will also have new characters, locations, armor, and weapons.

As for the PSP version of the game, it apparently isn't a straight port. The game will reportedly be called The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion, and will be set in a different place than its home console and PC brethren. The Elder Scrolls Travels is the same designation given to versions of previous portable Elder Scrolls games that appeared on mobile phones and the Nokia N-Gage.

The PSP and PS3 editions of the games were first rumored in April, when a poster on a gaming message board revealed what he said was a Bethesda "release list," with Oblivion set for a November 6 release on the two systems. Rumors were stoked again in July when a product listing for Oblivion on PS3 showed up on GameStop.

No release dates were given for the two games. ...

Last month, Rep. Cliff Sterns (R-FL) introduced the Truth in Video Game Rating Act in the US House of Representatives. Yesterday, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced its counterpart in the Senate. While the text of the bill has yet to be released by the Government Printing Office, Brownback's announcement about the introduction suggests it is functionally similar to Stearns' own legislation.

In a statement, Brownback said the Entertainment Software Ratings Board needed improvement, in part because they don't even play the games they rate. He said his bill would "direct the Federal Trade Commission to require that reviewers consider the full content of a video game before issuing a rating."

Currently, the ESRB rates games based on a video tape of each game's most objectionable content, as determined and compiled by the publisher submitting it for review.

"For video game ratings to be meaningful and worthy of a parent's trust, the game ratings must be more objective and accurate," Brownback said in a statement.

Brownback's bill would also prohibit publishers from withholding or hiding the content of a game to the ratings board and charge the FTC with defining parameters for describing game content and what constitute a mischaracterization of it.

The bill would require the US General Accounting Office to study the efficacy of the ESRB, as well as possible alternative systems, including a universal ratings system that would also cover movies and TV.

Entertainment Software Association president Douglas Lowenstein went on the record about Stearns' bill last month, saying it wouldn't accomplish its goal. He said it would make hardcore gaming skills a prerequisite for raters, and that those people would not be representative of average American parents. ...

Future Publishing has confirmed it is to sell or close a number of titles in its portfolio, but all games titles are currently safe.

"We are exploring options to sell titles, but none are from the games portfolio," confirmed a spokesperson for the company.

Managing director Robert Price sent an email to all staff this afternoon detailing reasons for the refocus.

"Against a backdrop of challenging market conditions currently faced by all publishers, we simply cannot afford to invest on all fronts, so these changes enable us to support our core print businesses and our planned areas of expansion mid-term, particularly online," he said.

"A number of magazines will be sold or closed," said Price. Titles singled out include DJ, Total Mobile, Digital Camera Shopper and Home Entertainment Week.

Future publishes a range of videogame magazines, including Edge, GamesMaster, Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine and PC Gamer. ...

Retailers and consumers alike will be able to get their hands on a wealth of next-generation titles, with 360-exclusive Gears of War leading the charge in Europe on November 17th.

Other titles ready for the holiday season include the third outing for Activision's number one 360 title Call of Duty, as well as fan favourite Dead or Alive: Xtreme 2 from Tecmo.

Younger gamers are catered for with the Xbox 360 version of Cars, a game that has performed very well for publisher THQ, while new Rare title Viva Piñata will hit retail with cross-media promotions due to the animated series showing on 4Kids TV, as well as the promise of licensed merchandise in 2007.

Sports fans will have plenty of choice with the next-gen exclusive FIFA 2007 joining NBA Live 07, NBA 2K7 and NHL 07 in stores, while Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 are both updated for the Christmas season.

Honestly. No sooner do you write one item about new content on Xbox Live Marketplace, but a bucketload of new stuff turns up. This time it's headlined by a WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 demo.

That's joined by trailers of Tony Hawk's Project 8, Wheelman, Frontlines: Fuel of War and Crossfire, along with what's described as an X06 game montage video.

On top of that, those of you who haven't already picked out a new theme for your dashboard now have the option of an X06 theme or one about Molyneux's latest, Fable 2.

And if you're living in France, Italy, Germany or Spain and missed out on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion downloadable content, Xbox Live's Major Nelson alerts us to the fact that four packs previously available in other regions are now available to you for 150 Microsoft points each. ...

Peter Jackson says that he's "a little bored of movies".

Last night the Lord of the Rings director revealed that he was forming Wingnut Interactive - an off-shoot of his Wingnut Studios company - to explore partnerships with Microsoft Game Studios, including an original chapter of the Halo franchise with Bungie and a second, unnamed title for Xbox 360 and Live.

In a roundtable discussion with Peter Molyneux and Bioware's Dr. Greg Zeschuk this morning, Jackson expanded on his reasons, and said that his changing attitude to film led him to explore other options - of which games are one.

"I've got to the stage now where I just end up catching something on DVD and I'm more excited about games coming out in the next 2-3 months than films," he said.

"That created an awareness in me of the shift in entertainment options out there, and if I'm feeling that other are too." On his approach, he said that his ideas - stories, scenarios and so on - might not always be suitable for film, and that's what he intends to explore with Wingnut Interactive.

"We're not going to force a round peg in a square hole," he said.

On his choice of Xbox 360 as the platform, he told attendees at Microsoft's press conference last night that he saw Xbox 360 and Live as "an amazing living canvas ... which allows the storytellers of our time to express themselves in a new medium".

"From a movie-maker's point of view, it is clear to me that the Xbox 360 platform is the stage where storytellers can work their craft in the same way they do today with movies and books but taking it further with interactivity," he concluded. ...

In all the excitement last night, you might have been forgiven for thinking Sensible World of Soccer and DOOM were the only new games announced for Xbox Live Arcade - but of course that's not the case.

Because among the games shown were several new titles, including Assault Heroes from Vivendi, Mutant Storm Empire from PomPom, and Street Trace: NYC from Gaia Industries.

Other games on the reel included Midway's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Defender, Konami's Contra and Gyruss, and indie titles Heavy Weapon: Atomic Tank (PopCap) and Small Arms (Gastronaut Studios).

All those titles should be released before the end of 2006, with the exception of SWOS and Gyruss, which are a bit harder to predict.

Lumines Live was also shown briefly, and as far as creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi knows, that's due out in the middle of October. ...
