    Mercury Meltdown has been designed to build upon and enhance the unique experience offered by the first Mercury title. With new game modes, graphics and features, Mercury Meltdown will offer a variety of enhancements over the original title while remaining true to its highly successful core gameplay dynamics. Along with all new environments, adversaries, mini-games and multiplayer modes, Mercury Meltdown includes a completely redesigned game progression system and structure to make the game more accessible to players of all skill levels. Even the Blob has had an overhaul and can be used in a number of interesting ways. For Mercury Meltdown, it was important to build upon and enhance the successful gameplay of the first title. One of the more major changes was the Blob itself. By chaning its characteristics and properties, it meant that levels could now offer a whole new experience and challenge while still maintaining the core gameplay of the original title.

    Just when you thought all hope may be lost for the PlayStation 3, there comes word that a new, original game from Midway's Surreal Software is indeed in the works for the system. Though we already knew that some sort of mysterious game from Surreal was coming, what we didn't know was that the title would be a new IP.

    IGN follows the story by referencing this latest help wanted ad by the company: "This is new, exciting IP, on a new technology base, with a concept which will blow you away. This is your chance to be the keystone of a large and experienced development team."

    Full development support and new, original IPs for our next-gen appetites is definitely something we would like to see more of. ...

    Nintendo is celebrating the continued European success of its innovative DS title, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?, selling half a million units in just nine weeks.

    Part of the publishers growing Touch! Generations range - which includes titles such as the globally successful Nintendogs - the game is inspired by a series of tests by Dr Ryuta Kawashima, a renowned Japanese neuroscientist.

    Players can undertake a series of short tests designed to stimulate and energise their brains in as little as five to ten minutes each day, and the popularity of the title has exceeded even Nintendo's expectations.

    More than 500,000 copies have been sold in just nine weeks since the European launch, outstripping the title's performance in native Japan, where it took 16 weeks to reach the same number of sales.

    North American sales of the title are showing equally impressive figures, racking up in excess of 600,000 units sold since its June 5th debut in the region.

    Unusually, week-on-week sales of the game have increased since launch, and Nintendo reports that the title is currently selling more than 60,000 copies every week, with no signs of a decline in its performance.

    Available for around GBP 20, sales of the title have been bolstered somewhat by the recent launch of the Nintendo DS Lite, which is in itself breaking records, shifting around 140,000 units each week since it's European debut on June 23rd.

    Laurent Fischer, Marketing Director for Nintendo Europe commented: “We are delighted that Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training has been such a huge success in Europe with thousands of people training their brains with this unique title."

    "We hope that the continued success of this and other Touch! Generations software will help gaming as an industry expand and begin to appeal to entirely new audiences," he added.

    With SingStar Anthems barely out the door, Sony has announced that another compilation pack - SingStar Legends - is on the way in time for Christmas.

    Legends, due out on PS2 in "early November", promises "a selection of the biggest household names in musical history" including Elton John, The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, The Jackson 5, John Lennon and Nirvana.

    There are no details on any planned tech upgrades to the game, but these SingStar updates, as we all know well by now, generally consist of new songs rather than new features.

    Still, there's a healthy mix on the track-list, parts of which have been announced today. The full list will be announced nearer release, presumably, but in the meantime we're told to expect:

    Elton John - "Rocket Man";
    The Beach Boys - "Surfin' USA";
    The Police - "Roxanne";
    Johnny Cash - "Ring of Fire";
    The Jackson 5 - "I Want You Back";
    Tina Turner - "What's Love Got To Do With It?";
    John Lennon - "Imagine";
    Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit";
    Ben E King - "Stand By Me";
    David Bowie - "Life On Mars?";
    The Righteous Brothers - "Unchained Melody".
    Along with a host of others to make up the traditional 30. And, as usual, the game will be released as a standalone pack and available as a bundle with two SingStar microphones and a USB converter. ...

    New details have been revealed of how you'll play Harvest Moon using the Wii's remote controller - along with news that a second DS instalment in the series is on the way.

    According to an article in Famitsu, partially translated by IGN, Harvest Moon Wii is set on an island this time. It was once home to the Harvest Goddess and a great tree, but one day she disappeared and the tree dried up.

    With the help of the friendly Koropokuru sprites, it's your job to make the island all lush and beautiful and that, so that the Goddess will return and the tree will come back to life.

    Which, of course, you'll do by giving it all Archers on your very own farm. You'll swing the Wii's remote like a hoe to plough fields, or tilt it towards the ground to use the watering can. You'll also wave the remote about to fish and to look after your animals. The d-pad will be used to switch tools, and by pressing down you can deactivate them - to avoid any risk of flooding your farm or hacking it to bits.

    Famitsu also revealed that a second Harvest Moon DS game is in development - despite the fact that the first one isn't even out yet. Titled Harvest Moon: The Island I Grew Up On, it'll let you experience what life's before you become a farmer.

    You'll live on an island with your mum, dad, brother and sister. You'll be able to grow rice, and the touch screen will be used to move your character while the d-pad controls your tools. The game will link up with Harvest Moon Wii - but there's no word on how this'll work just yet.

    Nor on when either game will be out - but the first Harvest Moon DS title is due to reach Europe by the end of the year. ...

    It's not exactly Killzone 2, but Insomniac's PS3 shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man did more than enough to tickle our FPS fancy when we got our hands it earlier this year at E3.

    Billed as a "blend of epic military action and unnerving horror," Resistance pits you against a bunch of invading aliens, in an alternate-reality 1950s England. Along with the usual single-player offerings, co-op and multiplayer modes are also touted, along with online campaigns that cater up to 32 players. As you can see from these screenshots, it's also very, very pretty. And that's all you need to know.

    Fall of Man is expected on Sony's next-gen console somewhere around its November 17 launch window and with Half-Life 2 and F.E.A.R. also coming to PS3, it seems shooter fans will have plenty to get their teeth into. We'll bring you more from the Resistance front line as it arrives.

    Can you hear that rumble? That's the sound of a 100,000 Japanese school children running to pre-order the new DS Pokémon adventure, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which hits the Land of the Rising Sun this Christmas. Or on second thoughts, maybe it's just that curry we had last night.

    As the first 'proper' Pokémon games to hit Nintendo's dual-screened handheld, Diamond and Pearl already have fans of the series rubbing their screens with excitement. Intriguingly, the games will both feature online play over Nintendo Wi-Fi, complete with voice-chat to mock your friends during battle. Online play, along with the combined popularity of Nintendo DS and Pokemon, will surely result in full-scale riots in Japanese shopping malls come Christmas.

    If we manage to get our hands on import copies, we'll let you know how Diamond and Pearl shape up when they hit Japan.

    Atari's forthcoming horror-fest Alone in the Dark has been delayed. Originally expected toward the end of this year, the publisher's revealed that it now won't be out until the company's 2008 fiscal year - so between April 2007 and March 2008.

    Mentioning the new target period for the title in a recent conference call with analysts, Atari boss Bruno Bonnell explained "We are announcing effectively Alone in the Dark as one of our franchisees for the future". He also implied the publisher has big plans for the franchise: "We actually are extending Alone in the Dark to some other formats right now we have not even announced yet... I don't want to be forward, but it will be announced shortly."

    According to a report on GameSpot, Brunnell went on to re-affirm the delayed Alone in the Dark is in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, but made no mention of the previously announced PC version. This has led to speculation that the PC version of the game has been binned, but Atari's UK arm has informed us this morning that the PC interation is "still confirmed".

    Atari's Alone in the Dark game marks the return of the survival horror granddaddy, and this modern reinvention of the series will, hopefully, be scary, spooky, and make us fill our pants with big poopie. The present-day setting of New York's Central Park plays host to the title's grisly events. ...

    News Via BBC

    A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.
    It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

    Police are searching premises after 21 people were arrested. Home Secretary John Reid said they believed the "main players" were accounted for.

    High security is causing delays at all UK airports. The threat level to the UK has been raised by MI5 to critical after the arrests in London, High Wycombe and Birmingham.

    Critical threat level - the highest - means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK". Three US airlines are believed to have been targeted. Mr Reid said had the attack gone ahead it would have caused a loss of life of "unprecedented scale". He said they were "confident" the main players were in custody, but neither the police nor government are "in any way complacent". We are confident that we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction. Prime Minister Tony Blair, on holiday in the Caribbean, paid tribute to the the police and the security services. He said they had tracked the situation for a "long period of time" and had "been involved in an extraordinary amount of hard work."

    "I thank them for the great job they are doing in protecting our country. "There has been an enormous amount of co-operation with the US authorities which has been of great value and underlines the threat we face and our determination to counter it," he said in a statement.

    BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera said the plot was thought to have involved a series of "waves" of simultaneous attacks, targeting three planes each time. He also said the plan "revolved around liquids of some kind". "Officials say the explosives would have been sophisticated and extremely effective," our correspondent said.

    Airport 'crammed'

    Meanwhile, at Heathrow Airport incoming short-haul flights have resumed, but long-haul services are seriously delayed. Several outbound services have been cancelled. The airport is crammed with thousands of passengers, while at Stansted more than 2,000 people are queuing to pass through customs.

    Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson said the alleged plotters had intended "mass murder on an unimaginable scale".

    "We are confident that we have disrupted a plan by terrorists to cause untold death and destruction and to commit, quite frankly, mass murder," he said.

    "We believe that the terrorists' aim was to smuggle explosives on to aeroplanes in hand luggage and to detonate these in flight. We also believe that the intended targets were flights from the United Kingdom to the United States of America."

    Police had spoken to a "good number of community leaders to make them aware that a major operation was under way," he added. Head of the Met's anti-terrorist branch Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke said the investigation had had "global dimensions" and had seen an "unprecedented level" of surveillance. The decision to take action had been taken on Wednesday night, he added.

    According to BBC sources the "principal characters" suspected of being involved in the plot were British-born. There are also understood to be links to Pakistan. BBC home affairs correspondent Andy Tighe said police sources had told him they had found "interesting items" which were being examined. In other major developments:

    Houses in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, are evacuated by police. US air marshals are being sent to the UK to provide extra air security. The US Department of Homeland Security increased the threat level applied to US-bound commercial flights originating in the UK to "red" - the first time it has done this for flights coming in from another country

    The Home Office confirmed there had been meetings overnight and on Thursday morning of the Cabinet's emergency committee, Cobra, chaired by Home Secretary John Reid, to discuss the terror alert. A spokesman for Number 10 said Tony Blair had briefed US President George Bush on the situation during the night

    BBC home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford said despite the arrests the threat level had been raised "in case there is some other sub-plot, back-up plot around this that the police aren't aware of".

    The Department for Transport set out the details of the security measures at UK airports. Passengers are not allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK, the department said.

    Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

    "We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only," the statement said.
