This a bit of rumor mongering, so take it with a mouthful of salt. A “reader” tells us his “insiders” say the Xbox 360 could be skipping the $100 price drop because they’re going to bundle their HD DVD drive with new Premium consoles. Bundling as in just selling both the external HD DVD drive with a standard console and not making the drive internal, like we excitedly thought when we first heard about the rumor. An interesting theory that makes sense in combatting the PS3 onslaught. We’ll see come fall. ...

Macrovision has revealed the results of a new worldwide survey of the casual games market, highlighting numerous misconceptions about its audience and their consumption habits.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the survey, which polled 789 consumers who play casual PC games through Macrovision's Trymedia network, is that 37 per cent of participants stated that they play nine or more game sessions per week.

The length of the gameplay sessions further challenged the preconceived idea of 'casual' gaming, with 66 per cent playing for at least an hour each time and 31 per cent spending more than two hours in each gameplay session.

Loren Hillberg, Macrovision's EVP and general manager of commerce, commented: "Our survey has determined that mainstream audiences dedicate a substantial amount of time to gameplay - not just in 15-minute increments as previously thought."

Further insight into gaming habits reveals that 73 per cent play at night, rather than "quick break" sessions during the working day. 55 per cent play at weekends and 48 per cent play when they have the house to themselves.

In terms of the demographic for casual games, Macrovision reveals that the market is dominated by women, with a 71 per cent female audience. 37 per cent are aged 35-49, and 28 per cent are aged 50-60, with almost 60 per cent confirming that they have no children under 18 years of age living at home.

Providing insight for advertisers and marketers, the survey revealed that the most popular genre is puzzle games (67 per cent), followed by card games (44 per cent), strategy (35 per cent) and action (34 per cent).

When not indulging in a mammoth casual games session, participants revealed their favourite hobbies were: pets, travel, arts and crafts, shopping and gardening - something advertising agencies and publishers alike may wish to take note of.

“Whether advertisers are reaching out to casual or core audiences, we want them, through the results of our survey, to realize who gamers are, how they operate and what they like," added Hillberg.

"The survey findings will certainly help them to adjust their advertising strategies accordingly to ensure maximum penetration to the appropriate audiences."

The survey also revealed a positive reception to the try-before-you-buy model, 30 per cent confirming more than 21 game downloads in the past year and an astonishing 70 per cent stating that they have purchased a game after playing it free of charge on the Internet.

I was going to wait until I had a webpage for this, but since my ftp access at Storm!Studios doesn't seem to exist at the moment, I'll just release it here.

This is an MPEG player I've been working on for a while, based on libmpeg2 and mpglib. Check the Readme file in the download for more extensive credits. It also uses Dan Potter's GhettoPlay menu, a few pieces borrowed from DCDivX for disc swap support, and a fair amount of code based on information found in the vcdimager documentation and souce code, and La Cible's video and audio drivers for lvfdc.

It should play most MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 program streams as long as they're not some insane size (anything more than 1024 pixels wide or 512 pixels high is guarunteed not to work, and I haven't tested with anything nearly that large) and elementary streams--m1v, m2v, mp1, mp2, mp3. If your video stream has audio content that the player doesn't recognize, such as ac3 audio or Playstation2 *.pss files, it should still play the video.

Most of the cool features of VCD 2.0 and SVCD aren't implemented--no menus or MPEG stills. When the player realizes it is dealing with a (S)VCD, it will look for the first 'Entry,' or first chapter. As it plays the movie, it will keep track of which chapter it is currently playing, so you can skip forward/backward by chapter using the X and B buttons on your controller. This only works with VideoCD, not with regular MPEG files.

Fast-forward is implemented, but honestly isn't too much faster than playing. Press right on your D-pad. This works with VCD and MPEG video files. Pressing A will pause or resume. Pressing Y will stop and bring you back to the menu.

When watching a movie, if you forget what the controls are, just take a look at your VMU screen.

The menu is fairly straight-forward. Pressing Y will add stuff to a 'playlist.' Pressing A will play the currently selected file, or your playlist if you created one. Navigate using UP/DOWN on the D-Pad.

Download vcdc-0.1-bin.zip, extract, and burn 1st_read.bin and vcdc.png using whatever tool you use to create selfbooting discs. I haven't provided an ip.bin, but one from just about any homebrew should work.

Source code is in vcdc-0.1-src.zip for anyone interested. ...

    News from IGN

One of last year's more unique PSP title is returning for a second go. The latest issue of Famitsu contains first details on Taito's sequel to Exit. In Japan, the sequel has been titled Kangaeru Exit, or "Thinking Exit."

The goal and basic flow of Exit remain unchanged with the sequel. Controlling Mr. ESC, you help people escape from disaster areas. As the name suggests, the new title places a greater emphasis on puzzle elements. The game promises over 110 stages that put your brain to the test.

A few changes have been made to the game's control scheme in order to deemphasize action and place the emphasis on puzzles. You now input actions in order to make Mr. ESC move. The game offers twelve actions: walk, run, open, duck, fall, jump, swim, command, pull up, push, operate and crawl. The "command" action allows you to give orders to the people you've rescued, while the "operate" command lets you to operate the various obstacles, including elevators and ropes, that you encounter in the stages.

Taito is making some additions and refinements that will likely add to the experience. Among other gameplay refinements, you can now change your direction when climbing up a ladder. The game also adds new obstacles, like ropeways and escalators. You'll also find new types of survivors, including a dog, whose capable of making long jumps and swimming, and a "macho," a male or female character who, as the name suggests has tremendous strength.

As with the original, Taito will be offering downloadable content, adding new stages long after you've cleared the basic game. In comments shared with Famitsu, the game's producer promised a "surprising" amount of volume.

The sequel to Exit will hit Japan in what's looking to be a very crowded September for the PSP. The game is currently 70% complete.

I've seen some pretty dubious "breaking news" in my day, but drunken officials revealing console launch dates? *Cough*... Well, why not, we'll play along with it. So, as the story goes, a thirsty Nintendo rep apparently had too much Sake to drink and, in his ethylic euphoria, hinted that the Wii would launch on October 30 in Japan, and ten days later in the US and Europe. So much for simultaneous worldwide release then? That's certainly not what Nintendo had us thinking!

There's still a couple of months left until September - when Nintendo said it would officially announce further Wii launch details - so expect plenty more fabricated stories and speculations until then. Because that's probably what this is, so you'd better take it with a grain of salt. Or a shot of sake, whichever suits you best!

In the meantime, the latest issue of Nintendo Power announced at least six titles to launch on day one of the Wii's release - out of the total "around 20" launch titles previously claimed by Nintendo. Oddly enough, there's no mention of Wii Sports or Super Mario Galaxy yet, even though both of them looked pretty well at last month's E3. The only six games mentioned are as follows:

    - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo)
    - Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Nintendo)
    - Red Steel (Ubisoft)
    - Rayman Raving Rabbids (Ubisoft)
    - Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (SEGA)
    - Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Square Enix)
