Konami today unveiled Pro Evolution Soccer 2006 for Nintendo DS and we've been playing it non stop.

The biggest surprise is that it actually beats Pro Evolution Soccer on PSP hands down, offering smoother play and killer visuals. Konami producer Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka previously apologised for the lacklustre PSP debut but has clearly made amends on DS.

DS exclusive elements include the ability to adjust formation settings mid match with the stylus. The lower screen also acts as a radar and shows player stats. Player animation looks spot on and the only minor disappointment is the lack of 3D replays. Wi-fi play works brilliantly and Nintendo fans finally have a football game worth shouting about. Expect Pro Evolution Soccer 2006 to arrive in September. ...

Well aren't we feeling smug. As we exclusively revealed earlier this week, TimeSplitters developer Free Radical has a whole new first-person shooter for you to get high on - it's called Haze, it's a near-futuristic military blaster, and it's coming out for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC early next year.

Set 25 years in the future, the tale revolves around independent military organisation Mantel, who thanks to their advanced weaponry and bio-mechanical support, are the scourge of terrorists and evil dictators everywhere. As a soldier in this unit, you've been asked to investigate a rebel faction based in South America. Unfortunately, things go a little, well, tits up.

The PR blurb is promising devastating firepower, dense and humid jungle ravines, breathtaking mountains, armies of *******-hard guerrillas (thems our words, not Free Radical's), and a variety of multiplayer modes that let you participate as a member of either side.

We'll probably hear a lot more on this title in the weeks to come. In the meantime, here are the first set of screens and a movie for you to run the rule over. You can also check out the official game site here. ...

The GameCube may have lost the battle to be current-gen market leader some time ago, but Nintendo has confirmed its ongoing support for the console with the announcment that a brand new Mario game is in development.

The Pre-E3 press conference was obviously geared towards the launch of Nintendo's latest 'disruptive technology' platform, the Wii. But that hasn't stopped the Japanese giant from showing an immense amount of support for both the DS handheld and Wii's predecessor, the GameCube.

Although the conference highlighted a few specific high profile games such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the E3 expo has revealed that there's plenty more on offer for GameCube owners - including a new platform exclusive starring Nintendo's long-time mascot.

Entitled Super Paper Mario, the new game is a curious blend of classic 2D side-scrolling platform action and the pseudo-3D graphics style of the Paper Mario series. Apparently, the game will also blend platform gaming with RPG elements, although exactly how it's all going to sit together is unknown at present.

What is known is that Mario, Peach and Bowser will all be available as playable characters, and there are elements of the new DS Mario game included - like being able to 'super-size' Mario until he fills the screen.

There's also the long awaited Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to look forward to, along with a range of third-party GameCube titles. These will include Tomb Raider Legend, Lego Star Wars II, Super Monkey Ball Adventure, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Rayman and a new Spyro game.

So while the console didn't get a look-in at Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference yesterday, it's clear that GameCube owners have at least a couple of reasons not to head down to the trade-in shop just yet. ...

The Opera browser for Nintendo DS is a version of the Opera browser for logging onto the internet with the WiFi-enabled Nintendo DS. Using the DS card, you can connect to a network via a HotSpot or wireless router, and begin browsing on two screens. With an on-screen keypad and stylus, users can easily navigate the Web from their Nintendo DS with PDA-like functionality. The two screens are used for multifunction purposes — both can show one web page together, or one can show a zoomed-in view of the page, and when typing, the bottom screen shows the text being entered while the top shows the webpage you are on.

One thing that the PSP does not have... a Mosquito repellant? Well now it does!

This is a simple package which will turn your PSP into a fully featured mosquito deflector. It is designed to be simple to use and is as such presented in an audio file.

When activated, this package makes your PSP emit an ultra high pitched sound which will repell mosquitos and similar small insects. It should work best indoors so is ideal for those summer nights!

    RAYDAR

P.s. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!

critical has released a Genesis/Megadrive emu for the Gizmondo Console, heres whats the info:

    GizDrive 0.1.0
    ---------------

Gizmondo port by critical of PicoDrive, which was written by Dave.
Dave's home for it on the web is: http://www.finalburn.com/mobile/pico.html

    It emulates MegaDrive/Genesis console.

The original documentation file in the doc directory of the zip file that this readme file came in.

This distribution includes the gx.dll distributed by Thierry Tremblay ([email protected]). You must use this gx.dll rather than the one I distributed with my other GizSMS, GizSNES and GizNester releases. It should be backwards-compatible with those emulators too.

    Contact: [email protected]

    Installation
    ------------

Put GizDrive.exe in the root of your SD card, along with the included gx.dll (replacing any existing one).

    Usage
    -----

ROMs must be in a directory called:

    GizDrive

in the root of your SD Card. They must have the extension '.bin'

    Buttons
    -------

The joypad does what you'd expect. The other buttons are:

    PLAY A
    FFWD B
    STOP C
    * Start

During emulation, the home key toggles rom selector on and off, which will also
    pause/resume the emulator.

Whilst in the rom selector is displayed, the STOP key exits back to the Gizmondo system.

Up and Down on the joypad when the rom selector is displayed will change the ROM that
will be played with the PLAY button is pressed.

This release doesn't have sound, screen scaling, or any of the other niceties that you'd hope for.

    News from the Rockin- B

New Saturn homebrew game in the making
Some weeks ago, Arnold and me started working on a brandnew graphic adventure for SEGA Saturn. We had teamed up for Tic Tac Toe, before. Arnold has got quite cool skills in creating 3D render images, composing music and writing game scripts. So I was easily convinced to contribute by writing the engine sourcecode, as I previously planned to do such a game sometime, myself.

It is gonna be inspired by Snatcher, Shadowrun and the like. I can tell you that the render images already look better than those of D and Mystery Mansion do on SEGA Saturn.

I will try to use some special effects the Saturn has to offer, one of which is extreme high resolution of 704x512 pixel, that you might haven't seen in any Saturn game, before. I even managed to display sprites in this high resolution, although the specs mentioned in the vdp1 manual are below this. The game will be multi language, currently it's developed in german and will be translated into english (and maybe others), after completion.

Things that I'd like add are:

    multiple sounds streamed from CD

    CD prefetching

    video playback

We thought about using the MPEG cart for movie playback, but ran into problems in creating MPEG cart compatible CDs.

    SNES emu screenshots and compatibility
VBT made some nice screenshots of commercial ROMs running on snes9x for SEGA Saturn. As I experienced myself, he reported that the fast asm cpu core works with a lot of ROMs and features a better compatibility than expected.

Of the few games I tested, those are working with the asm cpu core:

Actraiser 2, Blackthorne, Bomberman 1, Sonic, California Games 2, Captain Commando, Where in time is Carmen Sandiego, Castlevania 4, Chess Master, Clayfighter, Contra 3, Demon Crest, Desert Strike, Final Fantasy 2, Final Fantasy 5, F-Zero, F-Zero 2, Gradius 3, Illusion of Time, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Mega Man x2, Mystic Quest, Another World, Rock 'n Roll Racing, Sim City, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, Super Star Wars, Super Turrican, Super Turrican 2, Pro Tennis Tour, Terminator 2, Top Gear 1, Wing Commander, Zelda

    SGL replacement website updated
I added the latest new functions to the list on the SGL replacement website:

    slSlaveFunc, slScrWindow0, slScrWindow1, slScrLineWindow0, slScrLineWindow1, slScrWindowMode, slSetTVMode, slSetScrTVMode, slRequestCommand

Besides smaller updates here and there, most interesting for devvers is a commented list of supported compile flags, that I've added, too.
