We hope our readers are familiar with the vast number of ROM hacks for the original 1st-gen Pokemon games. With certain sequences of button presses, it’s possible to duplicate items in the player’s inventory, get infinite money, or even catch a glimpse of the elusive MissingNo. [bortreb] is familiar with all these hacks, but his efforts to program a Game Boy from inside Pokemon is by far the greatest Pokemon glitch ever created.
This ‘total control’ ROM hack was inspired by [p4wn3r]‘s extremely impressive 1 minute and 36 second long speed run for Pokemon Yellow. The technique used in [p4wn3r]‘s run relies on the fact the warp points in Pokemon Yellow are right after the item list in the Game Boy’s memory. By corrupting the item list, [p4wn3r] figured out how to make the front door of his house warp directly to the end of the game resulting in the fastest Pokemon speed run ever.
Realizing this ROM hack is able to control the CPU with only the player’s inventory, [bortreb] wanted to see how far he could push this hack. He ended up writing a bootstrapping program by depositing and discarding items from the in-game PC, and was then able to reprogram the Game Boy with a number of button presses on the D-pad, select, start, A and B buttons.
The resulting hack means [bortreb] can actually make Pong, Pacman, a MIDI player, or even a copy of Pokemon Blue. In the video after the break, you can see all of [bortreb]‘s speed run along with the finale of playing a MIDI file of the My Little Pony theme song. [bortreb] has a really amazing hack on his hands here that really pushes the definition of what can be done by tinkering around with a Pokemon ROM.

Wii U has already sold out, retailers have told MCV.
Multiple games buyers have told us their launch allocation of the Wii U has been completely taken by pre-orders from eager early adopters – one week ahead of the console's November 30th launch.
In fact, some retailers have told us their already taken orders against future Wii U shipments.
Nintendo already told MCV last month that it is working hard to supply the channel with fresh stock as quickly as possible ahead of the Christmas holidays. However, it did admit there was likely to be short supply on day one.
HMV announced this morning it has secured some extra stock for its official midnight opening next Thursday.
The platform holder has been reaching out to potential buyers with an extensive nationwide sampling
tour, giving consumers the chance to try out the unique GamePad controller.

It also kicked off a mammoth marketing plan in October, backed by a budget that exceeds that of the
    push behind the original way.

As with the 3DS last year, Nintendo has planned for a launch that extends beyond the initial surge of
the early weeks. Its launch window stretches from November 30th to the end of March, with promising
titles such as Pikmin 3 and LEGO City Undercover due early next year.

MCV has contacted Nintendo for further comment.

The online retail giant has mirrored its counterparts across the pond by offering heavy discounts across a number of its products.
What initially began as a US tradition on the back of the Thanksgiving holiday has quickly become a global event and more retailers are looking to benefit from the hype.
Unlike other retailers, Amazon extends its sales period outside of the typical one day sales period, continuing its Black Friday event over the weekend until Sunday 25th.
Customers face fierce competition for the products on offer as deals are announced around the clock. Users have a specific time limit to place their order for these selected products and details of the items availability are displayed, which highlights how many other bargain hunters have already gotten there hands on the product.
Possibly the highlight of Amazon’s sales event is a discounted price on its flagship Kindle Fire device, which is priced at just £99 throughout the event.
Other tech offerings, including a host of Windows 8 enabled PCs and laptops, as well as HD TVs and accessories are also available at discounts of up to 70 per cent.
Those interested in snapping up a potential Christmas bargain can do so here at Amazon’s UK site.

Leading psychologist Dr Aric Sigman has stated that the devices may produce increased levels of dopamine within the brains of kids.
It follows growing concerns around the world that youngsters are being exposed to PCs, TVs and other technology too young.
As a result, support has been mounting for more research to be carried out on the topic as currently, there is no conclusive evidence to support the claims.
"80% of adult brain size growth occurs during a child's first three years, when they may be most vulnerable to the effects of screen media," states Sigman.
"There should be a buffer zone in the early years, whereby this stage of child development is "cordoned off" from premature exposure to screen media"
The concerns come at a time where more children are using media devices than ever.
In a report released this week, the average age for a child to own their first piece of tech is just 9 1/2.
Many parents have found the lure of devices such as tablet PCs and smartphones to be appealing as their ability to host a range of content from TV shows and games offers a viable method of entertaining children almost anywhere.
It's not just health concerns that are a worry for parents, as with any web-connected devices, there's always the inherent risk of youngsters stumbling across content unsuitable for them.
It's hard to imagine that many parents will alter their child's media interactivity based on this report, however, it will be interesting to see if any further research will be conducted on the subject and what its findings may be.

The importing of the infamous R4 cart - or similar flash cart devices for DS - has been outlawed in Japan.
The R4 cart and those like it are read-writable cartridges for the DS which allow users to download and play pirate games.Nintendo has been locked in legal battles globally over the distribution and sale of such devices, as it made efforts to curb rampant piracy on its first dual-screen handheld.
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (translations via Kotaku) has announced it is now illegal to import such devices into Japan, where their sale has already been banned.
Game copying devices like the R4 were ruled illegal in France late last year, bringing the country in line with other European territories including the Netherlands, UK, Germany, Italy and Belgium, Nintendo said at the time.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced its Xbox 360 holiday bundles, but 'tis the season of excess! Someone at Amazon appears to have jumped the gun, as a product posting reveals an unannounced Xbox 360 with Kinect Nike+ bundle, which begins shipping on December 4th. Priced at $300, this package includes a 4GB Xbox 360, Kinect sensor, Nike+ Kinect Training game and one month of Xbox Live Gold. Though the Amazon product page is listed as "by Microsoft," we still reached out to the folks from Redmond for confirmation and were completely stonewalled. Of course, if you're looking for an excuse to delay your new post-holiday fitness regimen, you could always take the gamble of waiting for this bundle to become official. Call us bonkers, but we're pretty sure that it's a safe bet.
Update: Microsoft's Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) has confirmed Amazon's listing of this bundle via Twitter.

    2. Xbox 360 News

Rumours of a low-spec TV set-top box style Xbox have returned.
The Verge reckons that “multiple sources familiar with Redmond's plans” have revealed that Microsoft is indeed intent on launching two versions of the Xbox 720.
One is the fully-fledged meat and two veg console powerhouse that you’d expect while the other is a cheaper unit that is designed as a living-room access point for the wider casual market into the Xbox world.
It will be based on Windows 8 and won’t run large-scale triple-A titles but will instead focus on downloadable content. From a broader perspective the new box is yet another example of Microsoft attempting to make its new software environments easily scalable and easily embedded into a broad range of devices.
More speculative rumouring adds that “the company could opt to combine its core system for the next Xbox with a phone stack to deliver a phone capable of running a full version of Microsoft's Xbox Live services”.
Both machines will apparently be revealed in 2013 and arrive before Christmas next year.
Talk of a twin-SKU Xbox 720 strategy has been around for over a year, with November 2011 bringing word of a disc-less digital-only console. This was backed up in March of this year when MCV revealed that Microsoft is hatching a disc-less strategy of sorts for Xbox 720.

    2. Wii U News

Nintendo’s Wii U Gamepad apparently has a significant bit of added functionality that we’ve not heard about – it can display in 3D.
Oddly, though, we’re not talking 3DS-style glasses-free 3D. Instead, IMGMR reports that green and magenta glasses from Inficolor are need to take advantage of the experience.
It can be activated at any time during gameplay via the options menu.
Furthermore, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III is compatible.
There is an immediate question that presents itself, however, and it’s one that perhaps explains why Nintendo hasn’t publicised the console’s 3D functionality.
And it is this – people have already asked questions of the need to switch your focus from your controller’s screen and the TV screen. Can you imagine doing that when one is in 3D and the other is not? And when you have to remove or put on your glasses each time?
Of course, many titles – including Assassin’s Creed III – allow Gamepad-only gaming, removing the need for users to flick between two displays.
