Now Microsoft (MSFT) introduced the Xbox in November 2001 and deliberately brought out their next machine, the 360, just four years later, in November 2005, so as to be first to market with the next generation. They kept the two models as a range for just one year, killing off the original Xbox in November 2006 when it was just five years old.

To me it looks like they killed off the original Xbox half way through its life. They could have re-engineered it to make it far cheaper to manufacture (just as Sony did with the PSOne) and kept on selling it for another five years as part of a two product line. They would have sold tens of millions of additional units if the continuing success of the Playstation 2 is anything to go by.

Now imagine the benefits if they has kept the original Xbox alive. It would have given them market presence in the massive developing countries of China and India were lower incomes favor a cheaper machine. It would have brought millions of new people to Xbox live, helping to lock them into buying future generations of Microsoft consoles. And it would have made enormous profits from the continuing sale of the Xbox game back catalogue.

All three platform holders have told MCV that stock of PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii hardware may not meet demand over the festive period.

Microsoft's regional VP Chris Lewis added: "We're working hard to make sure that shortages don't happen. Inevitably the odd pocket of the EMEA region will have the odd blip, but we've got a lot better at this over the years."

DivX followed up Tuesday night's earnings report with a presentation at the JP Morgan SmMid cap conference.
I was rewarded when midway through the Q&A session, JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster coyly probed Kevin Hell about whether or not we were about to see DivX support on the Xbox 360. The question seemed to catch Hell off guard, and while his initial reaction was enthusiasm, there was something about his tone that suggested that Coster might be onto something.

Here is the exchange verbatim, but in order to appreciate the awkwardness of the exchange, you should really listen to the quote at the 24 minute mark of the presentation and make your own decision as to whether or not you hear a sense of urgency in Hell's response.
Coster - "Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we're soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?
Hell - "Yes! that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

At that point DivX CFO Dan Halvorson jumped in and quickly changed the subject.

This isnt gaming or homebrew related but its one of the funniest things that ive read about for ages and even funnier because both of my children attend the school in question, heres the news posted in the times:

    Digg This Funny News

A stripper peeled off her clothes and whipped a 16-year-old student in front of his class, ensuring that the boy’s mother had achieved her aim of providing a birthday surprise he would never forget.

But it was not the surprise gift that she had intended when she booked a man dressed in a gorilla suit.

Arnold Hill School in Nottingham launched an inquiry yesterday into the bizarre sequence of events after the stripper performed a significant chunk of her routine before the shocked teacher intervened.

The teenager’s unsuspecting mother had asked an agency to provide her son with a birthday surprise, even getting his teacher to agree to film it on a phone.

But a stripper dressed as a police-woman turned up instead. A student who witnessed the routine said: “She asked the lad to stand up, which he did, and told him he had been ‘a very naughty boy’ because he hadn’t been doing his homework.

“Then she put on some Britney Spears music and got out a collar and lead from her bag and told him to put them on. No one could believe it. Next she ordered him to get on all fours, led him around the classroom and hit him sixteen times ? one for each year ? on the bottom with her whip.”

The stripper then stripped down to her bra and panties before inviting the student to rub cream on her ? at which point his shocked teacher finally stepped in.“To be fair to the teacher, you could tell she was just stunned and when the cream came out she told the stripper, ‘That’s it. That’s enough.’

“The boy just ran out, and the stripper very calmly put her things back in her bag and walked out of the room. No one has been suspended, but the teachers have just asked us all to keep quiet.”

A spokeswoman for the school said: “There was an incident, we are aware of it, and it is being dealt with.”

Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed that it was investigating the incident but police are not involved.

It is not known whether the stripper, who managed to evade the school’s security measures, was booked through an agency.

As a parent of 2 at the school its a concern that someone got in without being checked but what a lucky lad to have a stripper in his class at school.

I do hope the teacher doesnt get the sack over it but its hilarious

If i can get pics of it ill post a new post at some stage ...

    News/release from Mysoft

hello, this is the version 2.5 of the my program

NDS2xGL is a program that add functions to the NO$GBA DS emulator (http://nocash.emubase.de/gba.htm), also thkz for martin for this incredible emulator =)

    How to Install??

Just Extract/copy these contents into NO$GBA directory and to run use the NDS2XGL2 executable

    Features From Version 2.5

    1) 1.5x zoom fixed (to fit in 1024x768) (fullscreen is TODO)
    2) Allow NO$GBA to rotate the screen
    3) Can Speed NO$GBA emulator a bit (2%-10%)
    4) It uses/requires OpenGL (a faster card more speed-up)
    5) It will remeber the last select files for the roms you open using the normal open method (rom list not supported in this version)
    6) It add 2 filter for the Graphics HQ2X and Scale2X
    7) Add Right Click in the Touchscreen area (simulates mouse-look like those new games (CS/quake/etc..)

    Optimized Settings:

Ok, i expect you have some new computer (that is needed to run NDS anyway), so this is the best you can do

    in the emulator setup (F11):
    Video Output: Set to 15bpp

    in the nds2xgl menu:
FrameSkip 1 (30 fps) (you can use more to get little extra speed)
    Textures: 16bits
    Filter: Scale2x or None

    News/release from SMCD

I used advanscene's list of save types and created a launcher for no$gba to change the no$gba.ini entry for nds save type based on identifying the game.

The included db goes from 0001-1600, minus game numbers 1271, 1272, 1591, 1600 as those save types are "TBC" which i assume means "to be completed."

Run no$gba and configure it, save config.

Put the exe & dat file in no$gba's directory and run the program. drag an nds file onto the program and click go. if it finds the game in the database, it'll back up the no$gba.ini file and edit it according to save type, then launch no$gba for you...

I've only done minimal testing but it seems to work OK. Might save some people a wee bit of time having to switch save types manually each game.
