Microsoft's Chris Satchell claims that "over half" of the people who have bought Xbox 360 since its November 2005 launch did not buy an Xbox 1.

"We've sold 10.4 million, but the stat you may not have heard is that over half of those sales are from people that didn't own an Xbox 1," Satchell - general manager of Microsoft's game developer group - told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz in an interview published today.

"So there're lots of new people coming in, which kind of surprises you. What we're actually finding is that our customer set is broadening, which we think is important."

That's a view well known to be shared by Nintendo, which has made significant strides with its DS and - it believes - Wii business by seeking to broaden its target demographic rather than simply selling more games and systems to existing fans.

However Satchell's comments are likely to be questioned in some quarters because Microsoft has already publicly admitted that it hasn't really sold 10.4 million consoles to consumers.

Speaking to gi.biz at CES, Peter Moore said that in the context of its own figures, "'Sold' means that we're a wholesaler of hardware and we sell it to a retailer, and that's the important criteria."

Meanwhile, recent NPD Group figures put Xbox 360's US installed base at 4.5 million, with Wii at 1.1 million and PlayStation 3 finding its feet with around 690,000 US owners by the end of 2006.

Whatever the real 360 number though, the fact that Microsoft is claiming "over half" as new consumers is likely to cause concern amongst its console rivals and surprise commentators - some of whom have been vocal in their belief that Xbox 360's early success is down to enthusiasm from the existing 24-million-strong pool of Xbox 1 owners, and not necessarily thanks to growth in Microsoft's console business. ...

4GB in an miniSDHC card? We scoff at the audacious bulk of such a memory device! See, only microSD can cut it anymore around the Engadget HQ, now that Kingmax has squeezed 4GB of flash memory into a microSDHC card -- champions of lesser memory formats will be shot on sight. Plus it's not just the capacity getting boost, performance has hit new highs as well, with 22.5MBps dual channel read speeds (150x) and normal read speeds of 19.1MBps (127x). That means the card can pull off SD 2.0 speeds in your digicam, while still making for a real kicker of a memory expansion for your phone or media player. Don't bother with looking for a price or availability date, we just pre-ordered the entire first run. ...

Sure, LG's KE850 Prada handset will set users back a cool $778, and the Google Switch just might pop in to make things a bit more interesting, but a recent research report has unveiled that Apple's sure-to-be-sold-out iPhone is a lean, mean, profit-generating machine nonetheless. While Apple's well-known for selling its iPods (and to a lesser extent, its Macs) for much, much more than it cost to manufacture, even we're a bit taken aback at how hard those corporate buyers must be workin' those suppliers on this one. According to iSuppli (no affiliation with Apple, of course), the 4GB iPhone will yield a "49.3 percent profit margin on each unit sold at the $499 retail price," while the 8GB rendition will kick back a 46.9-percent margin. You heard right, they're supposing the $499 mobile only costs Apple $245.83 to produce, while the 8GB flavor demands just $264.85. Of course, this isn't the first time a hot-selling product has been broken down by the numbers to prove just how ripped off we're all getting (if these numbers are to be trusted, that is) -- but hey, unless you've got the means to buy capacitors and LCD touchscreens by the boatload, you're probably stuck paying exactly what they ask. Plus if all this sudden competition gets a bit too heated, don't think Apple doesn't have any room to introduce a (highly desired) price drop.

It's about time. We're just sick and tired of all those whipper snappers, running amok in our deatmatches and stealing all our kills. Rep. Aurelia Greene (D) and Rep. Keith Wright (D), patron saints of mature gamers, have both proposed laws which ban the sale of violent video games to minors in the state of New York, and hide them away in an adults only section of the store. Rep. Wright's law concentrates on more scandalous forms of violence and racism, while Rep. Greene seems generally down on the whole general of video game violence. Keith Wright's law would require an ID check for anyone appearing under the age of 30 attempting to buy a violent video game, which seems to work so well at keeping alcohol and cigarettes out of the hands of minors.

Sony has confirmed it will announce the UK PS3 price and release date early next week, while confirming yesterday's reports that the Irish PS3 price has been bumped up.

Following yesterday's reports on the Irish PS3 website, Sony Europe sent out a blanket email to try and clear things up. Again boss David Reeves confirmed that the console is still on course for a March release, despite CEO Howard Stringer saying it was happening in April.

Whatever it may be, we'll know early next week, according to the statement: "Sony is planning an announcement about the UK PS3 price and release date early next week."

Sony also explained why the price is higher in Ireland saying, "The price for PS3 in Europe is still €499 and €599 respectively. The higher price for the 60GB model in Ireland is purely down to their local rate of VAT, which is 21%."

Expect the UK price to be £425.

Bethesda's Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles - which we broke first word on earlier this month - is due out this spring on Xbox 360 and PC.

As revealed previously, the expansion packs 30-plus hours of new Elder Scrolls adventuring and presents players with a new plane of Oblivion to explore - the realm of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness.

"Within the Realm of Sheogorath, players can explore the two extreme sides of the god's madness - the sublimely creative and the completely psychotic. Something is happening to the Shivering Isles and Sheogorath himself looks to you to be his champion and defend his realm and its inhabitants from destruction. Do you have the strength to survive his trials, tame a realm fraught with paranoia and despair, and wear the mantle of a God?", says Bethesda.

The developer's additionally explained that Shivering Isles "features a bizarre landscape split between the two sides - Mania and Dementia -filled with vast, twisting dungeons mirroring the roots of the trees they are buried within." Players can expect to encounter plenty of new creatures "including hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibious Grummites" and the dev's also stuffing in the likes of new items, ingredients and spells - "and have the talented craftsmen of Crucible and Bliss forge new armor and weapons just for you."

Apparently, the Xbox 360 version of Shivering Isles is only going to be released through Xbox Live, while the PC version will be your vanilla retail release. ...

Bill Gates has questioned Nintendo's strategy for Wii, saying "Look at the resolution you get with a controlled experience like that. Say to yourself, how in terms of using a game for a long period of time, what kind of accuracy and capability do you want?

"Look at the classic Nintendo positioning Look at the graphics. Look at Nintendo's execution in terms of online capability... If you want to play online, get an Xbox. We're not standing still," Gates told the San Jose Mercury News.

"Look at what you saw today connecting up the world to the Windows PC. Do you expect Nintendo to rev up a team to create cross-device gaming and tool kits to develop those things? Not very likely."

But according to the MS boss Nintendo "clearly did some things right" in the past, such as teaming up with UK-based developer Rare. "In my household, everybody plays Viva Piñata," he confessed.

Outside of competitor sniping, in the interview Gates also shared his thoughts on the original Xbox, observing that Microsoft's last-gen console was "20 per cent better" that its rivals.

However, he continued saying "It didn't matter. We were a year late, didn't have the best games. We had this bigger box. We did have online. We didn't switch positions on that."

But on the Xbox 360 he says Microsoft's strategy is "working perfectly. We wanted to be the guy with the small box that costs less. We wanted to have the most games. We wanted to play to our software strength, and tools and online.

"We wanted to swap positions with Sony. We wanted to not be a year late, not be a big box, not be a more expensive box. How are we doing on that?" ...

The latest Halo 3 update has appeared on the official Bungie website, and this week it's all about the assault rifle.

"The MA5C 7.62mm rifle is an air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine fed weapon designed for automatic fire," the update reads. "The weapon has an attached electronics suite that provides information on rounds remaining in magazine, compass heading, as well as several other "housekeeping" functions."

This time around the power of Halo 3's remixed assault rifle is described as being "somewhere between the original MA5B Assault Rifle and the BR55 Battle Rifle", with clip capacity "reduced to the 32 rounds that you're used to seeing in the BR55" and the rifle's range has been "slightly improved over its predecessor to make it more formidable as an Assault Rifle." ...

The latest Fable 2 developer update has wielded the first images of Lionhead's 360 RPG sequel - and if you're excited by pixels and half-finished ground textures, you're in for a treat.

"It wasn't long before the cube was replaced with the mesh of a human, giving birth to the short-lived but much-loved crotch cam," the update reads, with a screenshot of what appears to be a polygonal package.

"During this time our meshes had become textured and our camera was no longer nestled inside someone's crotch. Tiny little dots are actually visual representations of life forms in Albion, spending their days playing a game of tag amongst each other. It wasn't very long before these dots were replaced by the original Hero from Fable, but just as placeholder artwork"

But, if you look a bit harder through the mischief Lionhead offers some more general information on Fable 2's progress, noting that it is adding "functionality, slicker visuals and most importantly a lot of new features" as development progresses.

Fable 2 is expected to exit Lionhead's doors sometime next year. Or the year after. Or the year after that...
