Microsoft's Xbox wing in Japan today invited many media outlets, including SPOnG, to a major briefing dated for April 6th next week, with those close to proceedings hinting that some major announcements are planned. Indeed, those close to planning have openly mooted Phantasy Star Universe from Sega and a new Tales of title from Namco will headline the event.

Microsoft has suffered terribly in the Japanese market, with consumers again rejecting Microsoft's courtship dance, seeing its revised offering go unsold. The situation has been compounded by the fact that the Xbox 360 was in part designed to appeal to a consumer base renowned as being the most discerning on the planet. Indeed, Microsoft openly touted its refreshed credibility in the Japanese market prior to launching its hardware and in fairness it had covered every base except the inherent xenophobia of its target market.

As to what else Microsoft may show is up in the air, though a new Square Enix exclusive has been mentioned in some circles, as have various Sega arcade conversions including Virtua Fighter and Afterburner. Other titles mooted include Konami's Winning Eleven as well as various Xbox Live Arcade titles...

Whatever happens, it's going to be big, and attractive to our Japanese gaming friends. As to whether they'll buy an Xbox 360 to play what is offered is anyone's guess. ...

A GotNext "spy pirate" has learned that Call of Duty will be making a stop on the Nintendo Revolution.

If it's true that the unnamed next-gen iteration of the series will be "a launch or 'launch window' title," then CoD should be the first third-party FPS to use the Revmote.

Exakt Entertainment will reportedly handle the Revolution edition for Nintendo, which would make sense as they ported Call of Duty: Finest Hour for the GameCube. Rumors of launch titles should be fallin' aplenty in the weeks leading up to E3, so keep your eyes and ears open, people. Also beware of premature April Fools' Day pranks. ("Spy pirate"?) ...

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told Fortune magazine that the company is interested in taking on the iPod, and hinted about combining the player with a cellphone. Ballmer said,

“In five years are people really going to carry two devices? One device that is their communication device, one device that is music? There’s going to be a lot of opportunities to get back in that game. We want to be in that game. Expect to see announcements from us in that area in the next 12 months.”
Of course, Microsoft will have to play catch-up again and again, because Apple will almost certainly have an iPod phone on the market 12 months from now. Good luck, Redmondians. ...

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that it will publish B-Boy for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable in September. Developed by FreeStyleGames in collaboration with DJ Hooch and Crazy Legs (of the Rock Steady Crew), B-Boy is a hip-hop-themed competitive dancing game in which you'll get to battle against real-life crews and B-boy superstars.

"B-boy culture is one of the four core elements of hip-hop, and the teams at SCEE and FreeStyleGames have managed to put together this game in a way that means the hip-hop community can be sure that the integrity and art of B-boying won't be compromised," said Crazy Legs. "It's great to know that they have actively sought out the real b-boys that make the scene what it is today to make this game happen."

In addition to a number of different arcade modes that you can jump into for instant head-to-head contests (including wireless play for the PSP version), B-Boy will feature a single-player "B-Boy Life" mode in which you'll get to create your own breaker and form your own crew. As you progress through the game, you'll be able to upgrade your breaker by learning up to 800 motion-captured moves. As your crew earns respect in competitions at 21 venues from all over the world, you'll encounter around 40 rival B-boy superstars, including the likes of Kamel, Ivan "The Urban Action Figure", Crumbs, Hong10, Lillou, and Mouse.

B-Boy is currently scheduled for release in Europe in September, but no North American release has been confirmed at this time. We'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. ...

Back in December, Japanese publiser AQ Interactive announced its support for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and revealed it had three games in development for the console. Just a few months later, the studio has revealed that one of the titles will be in Japanese stores this summer.

According to retail sources in Japan, AQ's Bullet Witch has been scheduled for release in Japan on June 29. The action adventure title is being developed by Cavia, which is best known as the studio behind Square Enix's Drakengard series.

Bullet Witch takes place in an exceedingly bleak near future in the year 2013. Civilization is on the brink of extinction after demons begin appearing on Earth, and the player wades into the fray as a witch named Alicia. Equipped with a broom-shaped gun, players will try to take down the demons and save mankind. Using Xbox Live, players will be able to download additional stages and special costumes.

The monsters in Bullet Witch have been designed by artist Yasushi Nirasawa, who has previously contributed his talents to many movies including Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), Hellboy (2004), and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001).

In addition to Bullet Witch, AQ Interactive has two other projects in development for the Xbox 360: Cry On and Vampire Rain. ...

Microsoft's integration of its consoles and the Web took another step today, with the announcement of friends management on My Xbox, the online community based around the Xbox and Xbox 360. The addition is "only a portion of what we've got up our sleeves," says My Xbox lead program manager Clinton Fowler.

Beginning today, whether gamers wish to add a player they rumbled with in Halo 2 the night before to their friends list or kick off some noob that was clinging on to their roster of buddies, they won't have to wait until they fire up their Xboxes or Xbox 360s. Friend requests can now be sent, accepted, or declined over the Internet through Xbox.com, and existing friends can be removed from lists.

"I can't tell you how long we've wanted to do this feature, and it's finally here," Clinton beamed in a post on Xbox.com. "You don't have to look at those pending friend requests anymore, and you also don't have to wait 'til you get to the console to send a friend request to that guy or gal in the forums!"

Microsoft's Xbox 360 has racked up the best debut ever for a console platform in Australia, with over 30,000 units of the system selling through in the four days following its March 23rd launch.

That's according to figures from market analyst GfK, which reports that around 10,000 consoles sold at the midnight launch on March 23rd, followed by an additional 20,000 units in the following days.

The totals put the Xbox 360 at the top of the launch sales league table in the region - the former record holder was Sony's PlayStation Portable, which sold through 27,000 units in a comparable period of time.

However, it's not clear whether all of the pre-orders taken for the Xbox 360 in Australia have yet been met - Microsoft's Xbox chief in the region, David McLean, had previously told local publication AustralianIT that pre-orders were running at around 45,000 units.

Commenting to the site in the wake of the launch figures being revealed by GfK, he said merely that the firm would "easily reach our launch window forecast."

GfK also revealed that a tie ratio of around 2.6 games per console has been seen in the early days of the launch; while McLean confirmed that the full Xbox 360 pack (as distinct from the hard drive lacking Core System) accounted for the bulk of sales.

The Xbox 360 launched in the other major global territories of North America, Europe and Japan before Christmas, but experienced massive shortages in the wake of the launches which are only now reaching a resolution.

Despite Microsoft's claims of a worldwide global launch, the Australian launch comes almost four months after other English-speaking territories got their hands on the console - so gamers in the territory are likely to have been relieved when Sony's Phil Harrison, on stage at GDC last week, told the audience that Australia was included in the firm's plans for a global launch in November 2006 for PS3. ...

A month after losing his Enzo Ferrari in a crash on a Californian highway, former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson has been forced to say farewell to another luxury car after police impounded his Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

According to the LA Times Eriksson's wife, Nicole Persson, was driving the car when a Beverly Hills police officer's suspicions were aroused by its European licence plate.

He stopped the vehicle and found that Persson was unable to produce a driving licence. Further investigations revealed that the $400,000 Mercedes was not registered in the US, and after contacting Scotland Yard, police learned that the car may have been stolen.

LA County Sheriff Sergeant Phil Brooks said that Eriksson is now left with just one of the three luxury cars he imported into the US last year. "He brought in through San Diego two Ferraris and the Mercedes and said they were show cars and that he was not going to drive them on the streets," Brooks said.

Police are still investigating the incident last month where Eriksson's Enzo Ferrari was destroyed on a Pacific Coast highway. Eriksson claimed the car was being driven by a man named Dietrich, but so far police have been unable to ascertain his whereabouts. ...
