The time for monkey business has arrived, as D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA) announced today that The Adventures of Darwin™ is shipping to retail stores across North America exclusively for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system from Sony at an SRP of $19.95. In The Adventures of Darwin, players take on the leadership role in a group of primitive, yet promising, primates. The game follows the evolution of group leader Darwin the monkey and his adorable companions as they grow from a small assembly of simple primates to a powerful, intelligent colony of human cavemen. This process is prompted as players learn about and interact with the vast prehistoric world around them. If gamers want to survive life in the hostile world, they must evolve!

“Just as Darwin does in the game, the PlayStation 2 market is evolving--it’s now ready to accommodate more games like The Adventures of Darwin that appeal to family-friendly audiences,” said Sam Guilloud, brand manager, D3PA. “With such a large and loyal install base of over 38 million in the US (Source NPD), this is the perfect time in the PlayStation 2’s life cycle to release such a unique title.”

The Adventures of Darwin utilizes innovative real-time strategy elements and a first-hand evolutionary gaming experience. Commanding up to 30 primates, gamers assign a variety of tasks to their primate companions and make real-time decisions to increase the chances for survival of the fittest. Tribe members become more intelligent as they evolve, improving survival skills and verbal communication as the level of civilization advances. The richly colored world is beautiful but dangerous, filled with lush jungles, volatile volcanoes, dark caverns and raging rapids. The group hunts wooly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, ferocious dinosaurs and other foes for the safety and benefit of the village. Players can lead their tribe on adventures, teach them to hunt, collect raw materials to build with and use as tools and weapons, and encourage the use of increasingly civilized language. The weapons arsenal will advance as the village and its members progress. Players of The Adventures of Darwin will find out if they are capable of becoming a leader of evolution, or if they are doomed to a life of monkey business!

The Adventures of Darwin was developed by Vingt-et-un-Systems Corporation and is rated “E 10+” (“Everyone 10 and older”) by the ESRB. ...

Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick recently discussed the company's positive reception towards Nintendo's Wii and DS, urging their publishers to come up with a DS and wii strategy.

Thanks to NeoGAF reader Starchasing for the tip.

To be perfectly frank, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on with Wii and DS. I will tell you that very quickly we turned to both 2K and to Rockstar and said guys, we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy and we are working on it. As we get into the next quarter and into budget season for 2008, everybody in this company is completely focused on it.

Having said that, development cycles are long. Sports aren’t as good as games develop for specific platforms but we are looking at all of them across the board for Wii and DS. I will tell you that carnival games that we’ve announced for the Wii have gotten a lot of attention in the marketplace, as well as with our first-party partners. So we are pretty excited about that.

We have some -- some have been announced, some Wii titles have been announced and we are working to put more out on the Wii and DS.

Microsoft is paying an unprecedented $50 million for exclusive rights to publish two episodes of the forthcoming game, Grand Theft Auto IV, on its Xbox 360 games console, according to statements from a senior executive at GTA IV publisher, Take-Two Interactive.

Take-Two has already recorded the payments in financial filings as deferred revenue, explained Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two's newly appointed CFO, in a conference call with analysts.

First Xbox episode in March 2008

Microsoft is paying $25 million each for two separate downloadable packages that are expected to expand the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV with new play areas and features exclusive to Xbox 360 owners. The first will be released in March 2008, Goldstein said. Details of pricing have not been announced.

“The first 25 [million] is for the first episodic content package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of 08”, Goldstein said. “The second 25 [million] will be for the second episodic... the episode. That will be later in [the] fiscal year, fiscal 08”

While Goldstein did not specifically refer to GTA IV, Take-Two's most recent financial filings provide a list of forthcoming publications. The only episodic content listed is for GTA IV.

    Remarkable scale of exclusive deal

The unprecedented scale of the $50m deal is indicated by the fact that it exceeds Take-Two's average quarterly revenue of $43 million received from all its Xbox 360 titles combined.

Take-Two subsidiary Rockstar, which is developing the game, plans to release GTA IV in on October 16, 2007. The initial release is expected simultaneously for both Sony's PS3 console and the Xbox 360.

    Transcript of Take-Two comments

Goldstein made her comments on downloadable content in response to a question from Evan Wilson, a senior research analyst with Pacific Crest Securities' software team, during Take-Two Interactive's Second Quarter Fiscal 2007 Results Conference Call (link to streaming audio, requires free registration). The remarks come toward the end of the conference, at about the 40 minute mark. Here is our transcript of that section.

Evan Wilson, analyst: "And as it relates to the deferred revenue chunk associated with the... episodic content on Xbox 360, [I] can see that [unintelligible, assumed to be 25] million of that moved into short term deferred. Can you give us any sense of when that's going to hit the P and L [profit and loss statement], and will we see 25 million at one time and then the second 25 million or will [there] be a slow bleed onto the P and L?"

Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two CFO: "The first 25 is for the first episodic content... package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of 08; and that's why its moved into current, because its in the next 12 months. And the second 25 will be for the second episodic, [unintelligible] the episode, and that will be later in [the] fiscal year, fiscal 08." ...

First public video released running the Gamecube emulator for Windows.

This is what the beta tester said:

Just to get ride once for all of those people that still think it's fake.

Here's a video I recorded last night using HyperCam (not FRAPS). In this video you will see the main emulator running, it's output console, the folder with the files in the back and th hypercam window.

NOTE1: The video speed isn't the real speed the game would be going. It's slower due to Hypercam running over it (and using some of the CPU).
NOTE2: The video is encoded in xvid. You will need this decoder installed in order to be able to watch the video.
