The $500 16GB, Wi-Fi only iPad costs Apple less than half that to build, according to a recent component breakdown from iSuppli. And for the 64GB 3G iPad, Apple clears nearly $500 in profit. Here's how it breaks down:

This will no doubt be updated once iSuppli and others are able to do a teardown of an actual device, but those estimated profit margins are pretty stunning, particularly on the higher-end models. iSuppli also points out that the 32GB versions of the iPad only cost $30 more to make than their 16GB counterparts, yet retail for $100 more—a good indication that that's where they expect the sweet spot to be in the market.

Goes a long way to explaining why Apple's so willing to be flexible on the price, no? ...

SouthPeak has announced that 3D Dot Game Heroes will launch in Europe on 14th May, just a few days after its US release.

The game is already available in Japan, hence we've already reviewed it. 7/10, since you're asking.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a PS3 action adventure game in the retro style. Expect pretty visuals, massive weapons and some fun parodies of classic Japanese RPGs.

Those who just can't wait might like to get themselves along to the Midlands MCM Expo, taking place at the Telford International Centre on 20th February. There you'll be able to go hands-on with the game, a first for Europe. ...

Nippon Ichi America has said it will rename its quirky PSP title "Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?" immediately due to a "conflict of interest with an existing IP".

This applies to the original game, released last year (check out our review), and the sequel, which has been delayed to 4th May in the US to implement the change.

The game has also been pulled from the US PlayStation Store until it can be re-branded. The new name is "What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!?"

There's no word on what the IP was that threw up the conflict, but everyone assumes Batman. We've contacted Tecmo Koei, which distributed Badman in Europe, to find out whether the news is any different in these parts. ...

ACE Team has told Eurogamer that Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition will be released on Xbox Live on 30th March.

Co-founder Carlos Bordeu said this had already been announced, but this was news to us and we hope to you too.

"We're currently just fine tuning the game, doing QA and fixing bugs," added Bordeu. "I cannot comment on the price yet.

"We hope to be showing off more material as we get nearer to release, but the XBLA port will include new attacks, new weapons, a couple of new enemies and a new game mode - plus a few other things that we still haven't announced."
One new feature that has been announced is co-op Tower Challenges, where friends can team up and compete for leaderboard standings. Bordeu reckons this is "definitely" the "major" new addition.

Zeno Clash is a first-person brawler set in a unique world bursting with Gaudi-like architecture, bright colours and bizarre inhabitants. Eurogamer stamped 8/10 on the PC release last year and Atlus soon snapped up the rights to an XBLA port, er, enhancement.

Take a look at some of the new moves - headbutt! spin kick! - in the video below. ...

It seems not even Final Fantasy XIII producer, Yoshinori Kitase, and director, Motomu Toriyama know what Square boss Yoichi Wada meant when he said the firm may cease to create "this type of game".

Wada told Edge last month: "But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play."

The PS Blog asked Kitase and Toriyama to clarify what he meant, to which they said: "We don't know exactly what he meant by that. We don't really know what he meant by this style of game."

"If you consider that during Final Fantasy XIII's development, at peak time the team consisted of over 300 people. It was a huge team, plus it took a several long years to get the game finished. So, if Mr Wada meant that we would never make another Final Fantasy title with the similar number of people, taking as long as FFXIII did, we would agree.

"Obviously in the future we want to be much more efficient ... In the future our teams will be smaller and more effectively run. We suspect that is what Mr Wada meant by his statement."
The Official PlayStation magazine gave Square's RPG stunner a 9/10 score. Sweet. PSM3 wasn't quite as impressed. Can't win 'em all, huh? ...

The military currently trains its soldiers using PCs, but they were interested in switching to the Xbox 360 for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, Microsoft was not too interested in helping them out.

According to Danger Room, Microsoft refused to sell consoles to Roger Smith, chief technology officer for PEO STRI, the Army command responsible for purchasing training equipment. Why wouldn't Microsoft sell them consoles? Well, according to Smith, three reasons:

    • Microsoft was afraid that the military would buy up lots of Xbox 360s, but would buy only one game for each of them, so MS wouldn't make much money off of the games.
    • that a big military purchase would create a shortage of Xbox 360s.
    • that if the Xbox became an Army training device, it would taint its reputation. Microsoft was concerned that "do we want the Xbox 360 to be seen as having the flavor of a weapon? Do we want Mom and Dad knowing that their kid is buying the same game console as the military trains the SEALs and Rangers on?" Smith told me during an interview for Training & Simulation Journal.
When asked about this, a Microsoft rep claimed to have no knowledge of that conversation and suggested the Army uses the XNA Game Studio development tools. Sure, Microsoft. But they didn't say they were opposed to working with the Army.

But at this point, Smith doesn't seem so interested anymore, saying he'd "be happy to reopen these discussions if Microsoft is interested in selling these products to our community."

A weird situation all around. The soldiers just want Xboxes! Come on guys, let's work this out. ...
