The environmental activist group Greenpeace International has launched a new video featuring iconic game characters as part of its campaign against e-waste.

The 90-second video has Microsoft's Master Chief, Nintendo's Mario and Sony's Kratos competing for the prize of a "greener" games console.

Greenpeace's latest campaign is aimed directly at the big three game console manufacturers - Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft - who it accuses of failing to "reduce the toxic burden of their products."

The group recently criticised Nintendo and Microsoft publicly for their policies and practices on toxic chemicals and takeback.

"Game console manufacturers are lagging way behind the makers of mobile phones and PCs who have been reducing the toxic load of the products over the past year," said Zenia Al Hajj, Greenpeace International's toxics campaigner.

"Game consoles contain many of the same components as PCs so manufacturers can do a lot more," she added.

Greenpeace is engaged in a campaign to persuade the electronics industry to eliminate hazardous chemicals across the board, believing that current environmental protection legislation does not go far enough.

"Nintendo is surprised by the content of the Greenpeace report," a Nintendo of America spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz in response to the criticism.

"Nintendo takes great care to comply with all relevant regulations on avoiding the use of dangerous materials, recycling of materials, etc. For example, all Nintendo products supplied worldwide are designed to comply with relevant global standards.

"In order to certify that Nintendo products comply with standards for hazardous chemical substances, Nintendo has established the Green Procurement Standards, which require our component suppliers certify that any parts including hazardous chemical substances should not be delivered, and Nintendo fully controls its products in the company.

"Nintendo is always actively looking at ways to continue to increase its environmental stewardship and holds this as a corporate priority worldwide."

While Europe was surely happy about the launch of Xbox 360's Video Marketplace, Microsoft has admitted that, unfortunately, there are a few problems arising. Current issues include downloads not completing, slow file transfers, error messages, and this is my personal favorite, the wrong media downloading. Times like this make me sad that hardcore pornography isn't offered alongside Disney flicks.

Microsoft apologizes for any inconvenience and is investigating the matter in full. But since these problems remind me a lot of the US roll out of Video Marketplace, I'm guessing they won't be permanent. ...

Yes, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom on Xbox 360 still exists, and here's a brand new trailer to prove it.

The Korean developed action-strategy effort has been completely reworked for the Xbox 360, says Microsoft, with randomly generated maps, six heroes to choose from and 4-player online co-op.

"Creating a totally different gaming experience with cutting-edge technology has always been Blueside's goal", Blueside VP S.D. Kim explains.

"Circle of Doom is no exception, as it combines innovative action-play mechanics and familiar RPG themes, all presented in the most advanced HD visuals of epic scale and exotic style."

Sales news is starting to trickle out for some of the big Fall games, with the Xbox 360 so far looking very strong. BioWare's Mass Effect has sold a million copies, while Bungie's blockbuster Halo 3 has already sold over five million copies since its September 25th release date. That last figure comes from a GameDaily interview with Xbox Marketing VP Jeff Bell. Aside from noting this week's release of Halo 3's first downloadable map pack, Bell also connected these sales back to the console itself:

"The reaction has been very positive. In fact, we saw incredible sales of Xbox 360 for the week of November 18, including Black Friday of more than 310,000 Xbox 360 in the U.S. alone. This is really strong momentum for us given that we're already in our third year on the market."

Propaganda Games, developer of the new Turok game, has told CVG that it is looking at creating a fix to remove the team-killing Grab Bag achievement that caused riots a few weeks ago.

The Grab Bag achievement, dubbed the 'Worst Achievement Ever' by the internet, gives you ten points if you ""kill at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself in the same round of a public match," encouraging the ultra-infuriating practice of team killing.

Josh Holmes, VP of Propaganda Games, told CVG explained why such an achievement was added. "What we found was that players playing their first match in Turok - almost every player - was (accidentally) killing himself, a team mate and an enemy with a grenade or a Stick Bomb gun and so we thought 'hey, we should give them an achievement for that', as kind of a joke.

But those frustrated with 'Acheivement whores messing up team games for achievements in games like Halo 3 didn't find it funny.

"We've read some of the concerns that were described online, and maybe we underestimated the length to which so-called 'achievement whores' will go to [in order to] get their achievements," admitted Holmes.

"We are currently looking at readying a patch or solution for it if it does become an issue when the game releases," he added.

Interestingly, he goes on to discuss the general topic of online multiplayer achievements.

"I saw a lot of opinions expressed on forums and a lot of the comments on the stories that came out about the achievements. There's a lot of discussion on whether multiplayer achievements are good at all.

"Personally, from my experience, the people that I know that are really concerned with achievements in multiplayer are people that will set up a private match with their friends and try to accomplish the achievements within that framework. They won't go into a public match and try to disrupt the game by focussing on their achievements at the exclusion of helping their team," Holmes added.

"On one hand, it's something that encourages more people to actually play multiplayer, and therefore it introduces more people to the multiplayer experience and increases the community playing online. On the other hand, while they're 'achievement whore-ing', maybe it's screwing up the way that they play, and that's not a good thing."

Microsoft has rejected claims by film director Michael Bay that it wants HD-DVD and Blu-ray to fail "so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads".

"I didn't read his comments, although I heard about them, but hey, he's allowed his personal thoughts - I think he clarified some of those thoughts about 24 hours later - but for us we're focused on HD-DVD movies working with great partners, and we wouldn't have that offer for five free movies if we didn't believe in that format," Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of Gaming and Entertainment UK, told GamesIndustry.biz at the launch of Xbox Live Video Store.

"But we also believe in downloadable content, whether it's music, or movies - it's not about one solution, because one solution isn't going to work for everybody."

Bay had a moan on an "Ask Michael Bay" forum (why, Michael? Just why?) when asked about the high-definition formats his films appeared on. "What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about," he wrote.

"That is why Microsoft is handing out USD 100 million cheques to studios just embrace the HD-DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu-ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."

A little while later he wrote on the same forum that he knew what worked best for his film because he, er, made it, and he reckons it's Blu-ray. "But that said," he added, "I don't a care about this format war because I have both formats in my screening room - I'm just filling you in on what people deep in the film industry feel ultimately is going on." ...

The first details have emerged on Nintendo's Wii Chess - and knock us flat with a pawn, it actually sounds decent!

The budget title (it's only 30 Euros - or about 20 quid) supports games over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as well as the usual local multiplayer options. There's also different graphical styles you can flip around, which means Nintendo nostalgia is almost guaranteed.

Because it's the only vaguely relevant image we have, you can find the German box art to the right. And no, it doesn't say Wii Snatch.

It's out on January 18. Alright, it's only chess but this is the sort of stuff that sends (even more) Wiis flying off the shelves. For 20 quid, we're not going to complain.

Majesco has announced Wonderworld Amusement Park for the Wii, developed by Coyote Console.

Yes, it's another mini-games compilation, this time offering "a fully 3D world of games, rides and prizes across multiple themed areas that players can explore with personalised avatars".

There will be 30 different mini-games based on carnival games, according to Majesco, with four-player modes in some cases.

"In summertime, nothing is more synonymous with family fun than a day at an amusement park. In Wonderworld Amusement Park, we bring this sense of excitement and adventure to the Wii with four player support that enables the whole family to play together," said John Merchant, Majesco Europe marketing manager.

"Only the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers let us reproduce the real life thrill of these games and rides from the comfort of the living room."

We'll let you know whether we agree with all that come summer 2008 when the game is released. ...

A new, slick looking kart racer has been revealed for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Games for Windows Live, called Kart Attack.

Coming from Blimey Games - responsible for race sim series GTR - the racer promises full online modes, intelligent AI and a driving model that's "both easy to get to grips with and fun to play." No red shells, though.

Graphically, it looks incredible - especially for a XBLA/PSN title. With visuals like this you have to wonder how they're going to squeeze Kart Attack to fit Xbox Live's tight file restrictions.

We're still hoping for big rockets and crazy banana physics by the time the final game rolls around, but if they don't make it in at least we'll have the pretty trees to look at instead.

Read all about it on the Blimey Games website.
