Pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS are now more than double that for the Wii at Amazon.co.uk, as the new portable console continues to exceed previous record holder the PlayStation 3.
Although the online retailer has released no pre-order figures it previously indicated that pre-orders for the 3DS had beaten that of the PlayStation 3 by 20 per cent. Now exactly a week later that figure stands at 71 per cent.
3DS pre-orders are also double that of the Wii and more than five times that for the Nintendo DSi.
3DS products already feature twice in the top ten bestsellers chart on Amazon, with games including Ridge Racer 3D, Pilotwings Resort, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Rayman 3D and Super Street Fighter IV occupying slots in the top twenty hot future releases.
Accessories such as screen protectors and cases also feature prominently in Amazon's own dynamically updated lists. Although at time of press the number one title on the Hot Future Releases list is Zumba Fitness on the Wii, with the Aqua Blue 3DS console at number two.
The top five most pre-ordered consoles at Amazon.co.uk are the Nintendo 3DS, the PlayStation 3 (launched in March 2007), Wii (December 2006), Kinect (November 2010), and PlayStation Move (September 2010).
Due for release on March 25 the Nintendo 3DS is currently priced at £187 on Amazon. This is one of the cheapest price tags at any major retailer, after an intense price war between stores following Nintendo of Europe's failure to set a recommend retail price.
"It's unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year's Microsoft Kinect ," said Chris Poad, director of video games at Amazon.co.uk.
"Nintendo 3DS is launching at a time when interest in all things 3D is incredibly high and with the promise of real 3D graphics without glasses, it's a real breakthrough in handheld video game entertainment."

There has been no change in top three selling games of the week in Japan, with a very slow week of sales overall and no major new releases of note.
What effect the continuing earthquake disaster is having on the country's games business is unclear, but the stimulus from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS is already waning and there has been little else to excite the market this week.
Dynasty Warriors 7 remained the number one seller, but could manage only an additional 67,000 units after its 250,000 debut last week.
Square Enix's Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy remained the second biggest seller on 31,000 units and Professor Layton And The Mask of Miracle, still the best-selling 3DS title, kept its third place position with 18,000 sales.
The highest new entry of the week was Konami's Powerful Golf for Nintendo DS at number nine, but the title managed only a paltry 10,000 unit sales. As a result it only just came in ahead of Idea Factory's visual novel Hanaoni: Koisomeru Koku - Eikyuu no Shirushi, also on a rounded-down 10,000.
The only other new entries in the top 30 were Ubisoft's Splinter Cell 3D for the 3DS at number 18 and BioWare expansion (published by Spike in Japan) Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening at number 22.

The Air Force's Research Lab in Rome, NY. has one of the cheapest supercomputers ever made, and best of all over 3,000 of your friends can playTekken on it. The computer is made from 1,716 PlayStation 3s linked together, and is used to process images from spy planes. From the article: "The Air Force calls the souped-up PlayStations the Condor Supercomputer and says it is among the 40 fastest computers in the world. The Condor went online late last year, and it will likely change the way the Air Force and the Air National Guard watch things on the ground." We covered this story back in December when the Condor first went online.

Go into a console owner's lounge and you're most likely to find a Wii plugged into the TV, whereas their bedroom is more likely to house an Xbox 360, so says a new report.
According to a Nielsen survey released today, the Wii can be found in 59 per cent of all US living rooms that have consoles. Despite their more extensive home entertainment features, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 lag behind at 45 and 42 per cent respectively.
It's a different picture in kids' bedrooms though. The Xbox 360 comes out on top there, found in 28 per cent of all console-owning households, followed by the PlayStation 3 on 16 per cent and the Wii on 14 per cent.
The living room was the most popular place to keep a console at 50 per cent of all homes surveyed, followed by the kids' bedroom at 19 per cent and the master bedroom at 10 per cent.
Strangely, one per cent of those questioned admitted to keeping their games console on the patio, and another one per cent in the kitchen. Horses for courses, eh?

George 'Geohot' Hotz, the hacker behind the well-publicised PlayStation 3 security breach earlier this year, has scarpered to South America rather than go toe-to-toe with Sony's lawyers, according to the disgruntled platform holder.
Court documents filed by Sony and dug up by VGHQclaim that Geohot has been deliberately non-compliant with demands to present various devices for inspection, and has now turned tail and fled the country.
"Though the evidence establishing personal jurisdiction is already overwhelming, SCEA has little doubt that there is much more," read Sony's complaint.
"However, over the last several weeks. Hotz has engaged in a campaign to thwart jurisdictional discovery at every turn – regardless of whether the Court has ordered such discovery or not.
"Most seriously, after Magistrate Judge Spero ordered an inspection of Hotz's devices and ordered Hotz to appear at a deposition in California, SCEA learned that Hotz had deliberately removed integral components of his impounded hard drives prior to delivering them to a third party neutral and that Hotz is now in South America, an excuse for why he will not immediately provide the components of his hard drives as requested by the neutral.
"Hotz's attempts to dodge this Court's authority raise very serious questions."
It's safe to say things are looking decidedly dicey for poor old George. Sony is now also claiming that he lied to the court about having a PlayStation Network account.
"Hotz identified four PS3 Systems in his possession. He explained that he had purchased one of these consoles new in February 2010 and provided the serial number for that console. SCEA used that serial number to determine that on February 25, 2010, Hotz purchased the PS3 System at a Gamestop store just miles from his home.
"SCEA's records show that the same PS3 System was used on March 10, 2010 to create a PSN account under the user name 'blickmanic.' The IP address associated with the registration is located in Glen Rock, New Jersey, where Hotz lives."
