Next-Gen speaks with six games industry analysts who weigh in on the potential impact of the rumored $399 40GB US PlayStation 3.

The six analysts that we spoke with all agreed that the rumored $399 40GB PS3 for the US would facilitate an up-tick in PS3 sales this holiday, but to varying degrees.

Industry analysis mainstay Michael Pachter with Wedbush Morgan suggests that with each price drop, PS3 will be able to sustain higher monthly sales. He predicts as much as a 50 percent increase in US PS3 hardware sales if the console drops to $399.

Billy Pidgeon with IDC isn't as confident in PS3 sales. "I don't expect major uptake on PS3 this holiday," he says. "Xbox 360 needs to make the most of this holiday and build up the base, but Nintendo could move more Wii consoles than the others combined."

Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian believes that there will be a "meaningful up-tick" in sales once a cheaper 40GB model is introduced, but a less-expensive console from Sony will have to be backed by a stronger third-party developer strategy.

Janco Partners' Mike Hickey says Sony can only do what it can with what it's got this holiday. "We don't think there is really anything Sony can do beyond a dramatic price cut and a verbal outcry for PS3 Blu-ray buyers to turn the tide of their dismal holiday sales outlook relative to the Xbox 360," he says rather bleakly. "[From a software standpoint,] consumers seem to be struggling with the ‘why pay considerably more for considerably less?' purchasing dilemma. We are increasingly less confident Sony will show anything remotely remarkable on the PS3 for this holiday."

Daniel Schiappa, general manager of strategy for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, the unit responsible for Xbox and Zune, told attendees at a virtual worlds conference in Austin that "by next year, you'll probably know more about why I'm up here."

Austin360.com reports that later Schiappa hinted in an interview that Microsoft is considering launching some sort of virtual world offering that would span across its gaming, PC and mobile device offerings.
Schiappa said that most likely, any foray by Microsoft into the world of avatars or social networking would begin with PCs, then move across Xbox and finally into its mobile phone business.

It's been revealed the version of Manhunt 2 that the British Board of Film Classification turned down earlier this week in the UK, is exactly the same as the revised edition that's been granted a mature rating by the ESRB in North America.

This revelation comes from UK trade magazine MCV during an interview with BBFC spokeswoman Sue Clark. She defends the board's decision saying that the organisation isn't any tougher on videogames than it is on movies. "Manhunt 2 is the second game we have rejected in 23 years. I'd hardly call that draconian," she said.

Clark also responded to Rockstar's criticisms that the decision was 'unacceptable' and that adults should be able to make decisions for themselves. "DVD companies don't complain when we reject their products. The creator of the Struggle In Bondage didn't get up in arms. Manhunt 2 went beyond our guidelines when it came to gross violence and we had a public duty to reject it," she added.

Rockstar must now wait to hear a decision from the Video Appeals Committee, which will decide whether or not the game can be released in the UK. ...

Folks hoping that Apple would be so kind as to allow developers to craft their own 3rd party applications and have Cupertino accept 'em with open arms can now commence sulking, as a new WebApps directory unveiled today by Apple is nothing more than a dressed up version of Apple's bookmark list. Essentially, Apple has neatly brought together a selection of company-approved apps (listed here) that should function fine in Safari, but alas, there's absolutely no new functionality. So although iPod touch / iPhone users now have a central hub to go to for links to web applets, Apple is still leaving us high and dry when it comes to native 3rd party application support outside of its browser.

Wii and Nintendo DS continue to appeal to every kind of consumer. As Nintendo's list of upcoming games demonstrates, Nintendo has a game or experience for everyone, no matter their taste, age or video game playing acumen. Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy(TM) anchor Nintendo's lineup for the holidays, as Wii adds games faster than any other system in this generation. For Nintendo DS, Flash Focus(TM): Vision Training in Minutes a Day and Master of Illusion(TM) again will make people think of video gaming in a whole new way.

"Because of Wii and Nintendo DS momentum, third-party publishers are
supporting our systems like never before," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Their lineup of diverse games is testament to how we make the population of gamers a little bigger every day."

Major publishers worldwide are making games for Wii and Nintendo DS.
Shoppers will find dozens of options through the holiday shopping season and into 2008. By the end of 2007, the library of Wii games is expected to grow to 140, not counting nearly 200 downloadable Virtual Console(TM) titles, while the Nintendo DS library should be nearly 450. The following is a partial list of the upcoming games for Wii and Nintendo DS. Note that game titles and launch dates are subject to change. ...

    News/release from EkeEke

GnuboyGX is a port for the Nintendo Gamecube and Nintendo Wii (running in GC mode) of the open-source Gnuboy emulator, originally coded by Laguna and Gilgamesh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnuboy

This port is based on the last 1.0.4 CVS source, released by Joshua_ from EFNet #gameboy: http://www.netaxs.com/~gevaryah/gnuboy-1.0.4pre.tar.bz2.

This has nothing to do with the previous GX port for GCLinux, this is a full standalone port using LibOGC API.

    (2) If using a DVD to load the roms, the format of the image you burned must be ISO9960 or you won't be able to read from it. The maximal readable size is 1.35GB for Gamecube users and 4.7GB for Wii users.

    (3) When putting roms either on DVD or SDCARD, it is recommended to use subdirectories as there is a limit of 1000 files per directory.

    (4) Be sure that all controllers are plugged when you switch on the console, or they won't be correctly detected.

    (5) When using Memory Card in SLOTA, some mounting errors may occur. Remove and insert the Memory Card before trying to save/load anything again.
Be sure to have enough free space on the memory card when saving

    (6) If you want to compile the sourcecode yourself, please have a look to the compile.txt. The DOL executable has been compilated with the last libogc version...
