Official report notes that Seung Hi Cho not likely influenced by violent games

The massacre at Virginia Tech in April this year has, according to the official report filed by the Virginia governor's office, no link at all to videogames.

The report, which includes a mental health history of the shooter, Seung Hui Cho, notes that during his childhood he had "played videogames like Sonic the Hedgehog," yet "none of the videogames were war games or had violent themes."

This flies in the face of statements made on Fox TV news by Jack Thompson in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, which laid the blame for the incident firmly at the door of videogames.

He linked the Virginia Tech shootings to other school massacres: "What the FBI and Secret Service found after Columbine after looking at all the school shooting up to then was the common denominator of the perpetrators being immersed in incredibly violent entertainment, most notably violent video games."

He went on to cite other games, such as Doom and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, in other murders, and stated his belief that, "To have been able to pull this off, with the high body count, one has to have been able to have rehearsed it, and I think that's unfortunately what will be found to be the case."

But those statements made in the mainstream press by Thompson, who has a history of crusading against videogames, now seem to have been debunked, and the official report goes on to note that Cho's roommates never saw him play videogames – something which they thought odd, because most others did.

30 students and two teachers were killed in the Virginia Tech shootings, before Cho turned the gun on himself. The report concludes that more lives may have been saved if officials had acted sooner, although the governor stated that the point of the inquiry was to prevent further tragedies from occurring, rather than apportioning blame.

Warranty extension or not, the widespread nature of Xbox 360 failures pretty much guaranteed that it was only a matter of time before a third party stepped forward with a commercial fix. The X-Clamp Fix from Next Generation seems to the be first of these solutions available, although it's certainly not as simple as we would have expected. Consisting of some replacement screws and washers, the $15 kit helps you tighten down your GPU heatsink, possibly resetting your GPU in the process, a strategy modders have been using to escape the red ring of death for some time now. Probably worth a look if you're unable to get warranty service and the other wing-and-a-prayer fixes don't work for you, but the kit looks like it involves pretty significant disassembly -- we'd recommend picking up the phone and begging for an RMA first.

Mathieulh posted this guide to Run 1.5 firmware from the MS [Using Pandora]

To do what you want to achieve is very easy.

    - Install the pandora firmware to the memory stick using the normal procedure.

    - Copy the files created on the memory stick somewhere on your computer

    - save your flash1 registry folder into your memory stick root

    - Extract 1.50 from a psar using psardumper.
extract it as encrypted and then once more as decrypted (save both dumps)

    - Copy the encrypted dump folders to the root of the MS, and get pspbtcnf.txt pspbtcnf_game.txt and pspbtcnf_updater.txt from the decrypted dump, and use those to replace the ones from the encrypted dump located at ms0:/kd/

    - Get the flashemu.prx and lfatfs_patched.prx from the pandora MS files you saved earlier (they are in the kd folder) and copy those into ms0:/kd/

    - open ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf.txt and ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf_game.txt and ms0:/kd/pspbtcnf_updater.txt files using a text editor and :

    - change /kd/lfatfs.prx to /kd/lfatfs_patched.prx

    - add /kd/flashemu.prx right after the /kd/fatmsmod.prx line.

    - save the files

Done, the 1.50 firmware will boot straight from the MS using the Pandora battery. Of course you may adapt this mod to another firmware such as M33.

according to this article, "upscale PCs and playstation 3's" are the only systems capable of rendering 4D games at playable speeds

We all know what 3D graphics are - length, width & depth, but how many know what 4D graphics are? If you are one of the millions of people thinking 'What the %&$* are 4D graphics?', don't be alarmed. You've already seen them. Shocking isn't it? We all remember Kutaragi proclaiming not too long ago that PS3 would utilize 4D graphics, but what exactly did he mean?

4D, from a developer’s point of view, is is the progression of Life in time. It is where every tangible object in your game is living and constantly changing. As a result, change becomes an integral part of 4D graphics.

But how does all of this become possible? The answer is the dynamic rendering of procedural textures. Sounds complicated, but it's not. Let me explain; Procedural textures are textures which are linked to an algorithm. Instead of the texture being drawn pixel by pixel, you define the way these pixels have to be lit to produce the texture you want.

When the procedural texture is placed somewhere, you utilize an engine for actually generating these bitmap textures. They have life. They can change in a way you define them, especially through time. In a lot of the current games, the randomized textures method is used. Developers use one bitmap and just map it on randomly in the environment to create the design for that specific area. Every texture is not defined or unique. So, the method to create procedural textures allows for more control.

Allegorithmic is a utility set which allows an extensive realization of procedural textures. With it you define the procedures way using MaPZone, and then use ProFX to rasterize the images, producing the final result to be displayed by a renderer or a game engine.

Nervegas has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for the iPhone:

NES.app uses the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.

NES.app started as a fork based on the same original code as iPhoneNES, but has been completely rewritten to run very fast, and with many additional features such as sound, game genie, saved games, and full screen support.

0.99.06 [nervegas] Fixed rare controller-getting-stuck bug NOTE: 0.99.06 is built with the new toolchain, and is not compatible with prevous versions' save games.
0.99.07 [nervegas] Added alert with instructions when no ROMs are detected Added alert for invalid game genie codes; don't save Fixed alert sheet presentation / removed gap from bottom Added sound manager for sound without killing mediaserverd

A new 'Analyze This' feature on Gamasutra examines analysts' views on the rise of Nintendo's Wii and DS, and how well game publishers have reacted to it, with Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter commenting: 'It's hard to criticize anyone for putting too much faith in the PS3, as most [publishers] haven't created "cutting edge" titles yet for that platform. Most of the PS3 titles so far have been perennial titles, like Madden, Tony Hawk, etc ... I'd say that most failed to capitalize on the DS and Wii opportunity. The exception on the DS side is THQ, which has made every game it can for the platform. On the Wii side, Ubisoft took a big chance by making ten games for the [Wii] launch window, and it has performed very well, so far. I think that the others will catch up no later than early next year.' ...
