Its now mid August 2007 and time for a new State of the Homebrew Scene for the latter of this year.

Because we are the only dedicated Homebrew Network on the web covering just about all scenes (and if not then we will ) I feel its a good time to give a low down on each scene.

First off though lets remind all that Homebrew is not the same as warez. (Please Read Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft)

Also I would like to point out that each scene owes its life to the many hardware and software hackers who discover the exploits we come to enjoy so much today, they are then followed by the many worldwide coders who make the Homebrew scene a free and enjoyable place to hang out and make friends etc.

    Spread this News

Lets take a look at each scene.

    Apple iPhone

Apples new touch screen mobile phone has in the last week or two exploded onto the homebrew scene with multiple releases each day. Already we have had Nes Emulators and ports of Doom and projects such as the Arcade emulator MAME will bring masses to this new homebrew Scene. The Phone isnt on a worldwide release yet but the possibilities of a mainstream homebrew scene are staring at us . Short term future looks very interesting.

    Xbox360

The Xbox360 still only relies on Microsofts XNA (Basically an Official Homebrew Dev from MS). The only downer to XNA is that its not a mainstream solution. We have seen some games and emulators for it but with Microsoft pulling the strings you will be limited as to what you will see. Hacking on the Xbox seems to be limited to just the firmware and sadly the ability to play backed up games. As of writing there's no news of the killer Homebrew breakthrough we all want and the recent modchip raids will make it harder still for an exploit to be found. The best way to move on is for a softmod exploit for Homebrew to be released. In the short term the only Homebrew your going to see for the 360 is XNA.

    PS3

Sony played a blinder by giving the ability to install Linux onto the PS3, sadly though Linux is really only used by coders and the more hardcore user, we have already had some games that use linux to boot but because of size limitations its not feasible in the long run, a 50MB release for a small game certainly isn't what we all want. Only last week a new exploit was found on the latest PS3 firmware but we are going to have to wait to see if Homebrew will eventually arise from it. In the short term it looks like your stuck with linux.

    Nintendo Wii

Nintendos Wii console is already an emulation fans dream, the ability to play N64, Snes, Nes, Gamecube, Megadrive and PC Engine on this console make it a killer buy and recently Neogeo and MSX games have been announced to be arriving soon on the Virtual Console.

Now that's all very well but Nintendo last week in one firmware update killed the ability to load the Freeloader and SD Media Launcher. The only chance you have of playing Gamecube Homebrew on the Wii now is via a Modchip and with the raids on modchip suppliers last week this is a very dodgy area. Nintendo with every firmware update are closing the doors to exploits and that in turn closes the door to Homebrew. The short term future for Wii only Homebrew is that if you want emulators your going to have to use the Virtual Console or have a Modchip installed and wait for an exploit. Sadly it looks like a long wait.

    Sony Playstation Portable

The PSP Homebrew Scene is still the biggest mainstream noticed Homebrew scene of any generation, we now have homebrew support up to 2 behind Sonys Latest firmware. Custom Firmwares now give you full speed PSX Emulation and the community continues to pump out game after game. Nintendo 64 emulation gets closer to that elusive full speed and even last week a Nintendo DS Emulator was released for the PSP. Recent highlights include PSPTube which enables those of you with an Homebrew PSP to watch Youtube Videos on your PSP direct from the Net. The release of the PSPSlim aka PSP2000 in September with the additional 32mb of ram could mean even better ports of games and emulators. The hacking scene of the PSP at this time is the best in the whole Homebrew scene. The short term and long term future of PSP Homebrew continues to look great.

GP2X - The Linux Based Homebrew Console

The GP2X is a console that was made for Homebrew fans and coders, it has a worldwide base of people coding Emulators and Games for it and with 2x200mhz cpu's and 64megs ram it sure can deliver the goods. Recent developments for the GP2X include excellent GBA and PSX Emulators, both emulators are showing what this linux based console can do.

Because the GP2X was made with Homebrew in mind its future is secured as long as its fanbase want to see it go on and with one of the most hardcore followers amongst them expect this console to be here in years to come.

    The Nintendo DS

The worlds biggest selling console at this time and the console that gives the most varied amount of games and applications in the Homebrew Scene. Remember that all you need to run Homebrew on your DS is the is the Console itself (obviously), and a Flash Cart.

The amount of DS Homebrew games and apps released is staggering and so many push the system in new ways that its an exciting homebrew scene to watch. As with the PSP and GP2X the future of the DS for homebrew looks very

Mass Hysteria is my attempt at an original game for the NDS, where you use the simple menu interface to choose your actions. As the player it is your job to hack the TV airwaves and place footage onto them, given to you by random people. You are given the weekly listings for a channel, along with all the different genres of show that will be on, and you select a show to hijack that will attract the audience similar to the target of the footage.

The game features a ten week story mode, but the main feature was originally the mass hysteria mode where you are given four pieces of footage at random to place whereever you like and get the highest score possible. Game features include a shop to buy donuts to get the police attention off you, extra satellites so you can hijack more than one show per week and extra footage.

I've tested it as much as possible but there may still be some bugs I'm aware of a problem with the palettes getting messed up on the select slots screen, since there's a limit to the amount of palettes you can have at one time >_>

lol, this is my first attempt writing one of these, so I think I've included everything Hope you enjoy the game.

Tangram is the ancient china puzzle. It's good for your brain training.

This game has total 72 stage that is made with manual work terribly.

It has two control method that is shape recognition of stylus movement and key pad control.

Shape recognition is easy control method when sprites are departed from each other.

But when sprites are at a short distance, Shape recognition is difficult to control

because of interference of the other sprite.

So you will have to use key pad control and I recommend for the key pad control.

Magnifier icon is helped with you one tan position at each stage randomly.

    #Shape recognition
-. click and drag : movement
    -. Straight left,right,up,down line : flip
-. sloping left, right line : rotation

    #Key pad control
    -. Pad left,right,up,down : movement
    -. Y, A : rotation
    -. X, B : flip
    -. Trigger L, R : tangram selection change
-. select key : stage change on play

    Sorry for the bad english.

    News/release from Scognito:

Scoglionario is a question based game, based on the famous "Who wants to be a millionaire" ("Chi vuole essere milionario" in italian) tv show. The player is asked increasingly difficult general knowledge questions by the host. Questions are multiple choice: four possible answers are given and the player must choose the correct one. On answering the first question correctly, the player wins 100 (dollars or euro, it is the same -> nothing real). Subsequent questions are played for increasingly large sums (roughly doubling at each turn). If you answer bad, you lose and win the lower (yellow colored) sum.

    15 Aug 2007 - Scoglionario 0.1 is out!
    Features

Autodetecting system language and loading the specific questions pack (only italian and english for now)
DLDI compatible (tested on NinjaDS and R4)
Help: 50/50, Phone a friend, Ask the audience added (realtime-antani-randomizer-supersexy percentage builder thanks to AKBG)
Question stored in txt file (one for each 14 levels) so editing questions is easy
Themed as similiar as possible (sound and graphics) the original game
I didn't write the questions, I just used the files I found on google, so don't blame me if they are not good!

    Installation:

Patch the game with appropriate DLDI and put wherever you want inside the card
Put the "data" folder in the root of the card, or if you have the data folder yet, just put the "scoglionario" folder inside the "data" one on the card.
If you plan to use on emulator (only DeSmuME was tested) put all the questions file of your prefered language in the same folder where the rom is.
Drawback 1: since sound is garbled in the emulator, it is disabled (you can still turn on in the options screen). Drawback 2: you lose half on entertainment not playing on real DS!
    Enjoy

    Adding new questions is straightforward:

Open the questions_XX.txt, where XX is the level number (0 -> first question, 14 -> last question)
Add (or edit) a new question, using this simple template:
"question","answer1","answer2","answer3","answer4",X (X is a number from 1 to 4 representing the correct answer)
Example: "What is this game title?","Who wants to be me?","Super mario bros","Ti amo Valeria","Scoglionario",4
Important: Do not use the " (double quote) char inside the fields, use the ' (single quote) instead!

Planned features (if time will be my friend):

    Adding better graphics (artists needed)
Add exit button for not answer and leave the game
    Hall of fame
Kill bugs (send me mail at gmail.com)
Print real money from the DS if you win 1000000 (working on it)

A menu selection spotted during a demo of Unreal Tournament 3 seems to suggest that Sony is working on a player-identification system, perhaps similar to Xbox Live's Gamertag. After seeing the "Gamercard" option in a menu at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Games Digest was reportedly told by Epic's Mark Rein "Oops, you shouldn't have seen that."

What's more, a member of the Evil Avatar forums put forth an image from PlayStation Home that also has the "gamer card" option, this time with a space in the middle. We know very little at this point, but thought you all would appreciate a head-start on speculation. By the way, if the phrase "gamer card" seems familiar to you, you aren't imagining things. ...

Not everything inside the Wii, or its motion-sensing controls, is owned by Nintendo. There's a lot of stuff in there that belongs to other companies, and those components are making these other companies very rich. In particular, two companies that have parts in the Wiimote and nunchuk, the US-based Analog Devices and Italian-French company STMicroelectronics. Think about it, Nintendo may have 10 million Wiis out there, but there are far more Wiimotes and nunchuks.

Analog Devices had to convert one of its plants into a fully-dedicated Wiimote sensor facility. STMicroelectronics is in the process of increasing sensor production near Milan -- hmm, they're the ones responsible for the sensor in the nunchuk. Wonder if they're to blame for the nunchuk shortage of '06? With Nintendo raising it's Wii shipping estimate to 16.5 million by the end of their fiscal year next March, those parts companies better not stop the flow. It's still hard enough getting the console as is. ...

Though traditionally a controlling mother when it comes to its infant Xbox Live online service, Microsoft hinted today at easing up its sweaty-palmed handholding. Speaking at Gamefest 2007 (via 1UP), the company discussed the Xbox Live Server Platform (XLSP) that companies can use to deliver content, provided they take full responsibility for monitoring the content.

When suggested that one might use this to create a PC level editor that would make games for an Xbox 360 title, Microsoft Software Design Engineer Zsolt Mathe said, "Even though nobody has done that, I would highly recommend that."

Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein had previously stated that Xbox Live's resistance to user-created maps and mods was responsible in part to the delay of the Unreal Tournament 3 for Xbox 360. Looks like XLSP will be the system that expedites the version release.

The catch is that Microsoft must approve the game maker to use XLSP. We imagine it's kind of like the film Chasing Liberty, where the President of the US gives his over-protected daughter extra freedom to travel Europe with an undercover secret service agent constantly keeping watch. In this adaptation, Microsoft is played by the reliable Stark Sands, Mark Rein is captured brilliantly by the venerable and lovable Mandy Moore and XLSP is portrayed by the hunky Matthew Goode ... what? It was a good film, don't look at us like that! ...

The top-performing Xbox Live Arcade games have been revealed in a talk at GameFest by platform manager Mark Coates, following on from a lecture by Chris Satchell, who spoke about some of the latest Xbox Live numbers.

According to a report on Gamasutra, Microsoft is predicting 45 million downloads and over 100 games on XBLA by the end of 2007, with a 156 per cent return on those published so far.

What's more interesting are the statistics on which titles have been performing the best so far this year, with TMNT 1989 Arcade gathering the most users, followed by Worms and UNO.

Jewel Quest wins out on average session length, while UNO has been played for the most minutes overall.

Across the financial year running from June 2006 to July 2007 Streetfighter II HF is top of both the volume and revenue lists, with UNO and TMNT following up on volume, and Worms and Doom runners-up for revenue.

One particularly interesting statistic revealed was that the first two months after a game's release only accounted for 35 per cent of its revenue on average, something very different to most full release titles.

Finally, the average user apparently has 23 people on their friends list, although there's no information on whether or not all of those would be considered active. ...
