Speculation is rife that Halo 3 will launch on Xbox 360 on November 15 in the US. And if that's true, then we can expect a European release a week or two later.

The story, posted on ActiveXbox, claims to have got the information from "an anonymous executive in Microsoft's Xbox group". True or not? It sounds about the right time of year to us, especially as PS3 will be about to cash in on its second Christmas in the US and its first in Europe.

As we all know (even our mothers do), Microsoft doesn't comment on rumour and speculation but with enough heat, Bungie might just make a comment via its website. Stay tuned. ...

James Howell has updated his blog with news on the SegaGaga Translation Project:

Quick entry. Time to open this up for the new year. I've got my fingers crossed that we can release a patch for Segagaga before summer hits, but I won't promise anything.

Technical, material, and personal considerations stalled our work over the holidays, and we're picking up where we dropped our bit back in early December. We have lately given our attention to the movie files on the Segagaga disc. These contain the animated sequences available for viewing on Youtube, as well as other segments such as the Mogetan commercials.

Mogetan is a saurian handpuppet who is supposed to be a kid, curious about Sega and videogames. He asks questions to a female puppet named (in lieu of an actual name) Miss, voiced by Kikuko Inoue, the same woman who plays Alisa.

These files are encoded in .sfd format on the Dreamcast disc. We're ripping the files from our backup of the disc, converting them to AVI format, adding subtitles, and converting them back into .sfd format movies. These movie files will form part of the patch that our audience will apply to their backup copies.

I'm not sure how the subtitles will look on the screen, since the videos are stored at a smaller aspect ratio than they appear on a player's television. The videos are stored at a 4:3 ratio, and they play at a 5:3 ratio. I have .wmv versions of three of the opening movies uploaded onto my personal site, and they are versions of the movies stretched to a 5:3 aspect ratio. The Dreamcast presumably applies some sort of filter to the compressed images that make the jaggy sprites seem smoother, so hopefully the same standard will be applied to the subtitles.

Here are the videos, followed by some notes. I have chosen only those videos that play at the start of the game, in order to prevent spoiling anyone who's keeping himself fresh for the game.

    (1) Company Policy

This video plays right after the Sega and Hitmaker logos run across the screen at startup. I had to block the kanji at the top of the screen in order to make the English text readable. Thankfully, this is the only video that has distracting text over the space where a subtitle will go, so this does not need to happen again.

This is also one of the few instances where I've put the translation at the top of the screen-technically making it a supertitle-in order to prevent blocking the majority of the original material's activity.

    (2) Presidential Decision

This video plays right when the player starts the game. I had to hunt around the internet in order to learn the specific script language used in .SSA subtitle formats in order to change the text color. I have decided to use alternating yellow and white letters for now.

Since the text-only portions of the game assign specific colors to specific speakers, I will try to assign those colors to each character's subtitles in the final version.

    (3) Tour of the Main Office

During this scene, the screen quickly cuts to a black background with Japanese writing. In the effort to make our localization as thorough as we can, I have cut those frames from the animation and replaced them with English frames.

That's all for now. This blog ought to see more regular updates now that we're on the move again.

Manoel 'Fragger' Kasimier recently released the source code for JoyMenu, and add-on for QuakeDC:

I wanted to release this a long time ago, but a lot of things got in the way, and I wasn't sure if anyone wanted to work on it. Now some time has passed, and my mind changed. I don't care about this anymore.

    January 5, 2007.

This is the JoyMenu 2.2 source code. You can do whatever you want with it, and seeing how ugly some parts of the code are, probably the first thing you will do with it is to have a laugh.

It must be compiled with FrikQCC 2.4, because it uses some static variables.

Yes, I'm releasing this in the public domain. I don't care what you do with it.
I haven't updated my website yet, but here's a link: JoyMenu 2.2 source

If you want to see JoyMenu in action, head over to DCEvolution.net and download the QuakeDC - Manoel "Fragger" Kasimier Edition.

Codemasters is planning to launch Colin McRae: DIRT simultaneously on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in June, the publisher told Eurogamer this morning.

"At the moment the guys in the studio are working towards June, more likely to be the end of June I'd imagine," said a Codemasters spokesperson.

"As far as we're concerned internally, everything's on track."

It will be the first next-gen rally outing for the publisher, who is eager to impress us with heaps of sparkly high-definition mud.

The game will have the usual boot-full of point-to-point races and plenty of off-road excursions, as well as new Rally Cross events. You'll be able to hop behind the wheels of 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD vehicles, drive carelessly, and make a right old mess.

DIRT's got a flashy new damage engine too, multiplayer support and European, International and Global rally championships. It's enough to get our engines purring. ...

Lumines Live's promised downloadable content packs are now available to download from Xbox Live Marketplace, but you'll need to set aside more than a few minutes to grab them.

As it turns out, those anticipating a quick install routine to underscore the perceived cynicism behind the game's fragmentation - which saw buyers limited to just the challenge and online elements, along with a handful of "trial" levels for other modes - will actually have to wait for nearly 180MB of data to trundle down the line.

Microsoft and Q Entertainment have previously said that one of the reasons Lumines Live was broken up into sections was due to the 50MB download-size cap - reportedly now more of a "guideline" than a rule - and the size of the add-ons that make up the rest of the game go some way to backing that up. When you fire the game up, there's a mandatory auto-update to nab too.

The biggest of the three additions is initially free for Gold members. The Heavenly Star skin features a song by Genki Rockets, produced by Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi, and will be available for nowt until 21st February providing you have a gold account. It weighs in at 124.50MB - a reflection of the fact it adds not only new musical accompaniment, but also a video background for the skin's tweaked gameplay conditions.

Also available today, for 100 Microsoft points each, are the Vs. CPU and Puzzle/Mission add-on packs. The former weighs in at 24.48MB and unlocks a range of challenges that see you face off against AI-controlled opponents. The original Lumines Live package only offered one stage. There's a new unlockable bonus skin at the end of it too. Puzzle/Mission pack, meanwhile, fills out the Puzzle and Mission modes, with dozens of new additions to each, and is 29.59MB. Both packs will revert to 300 Microsoft points after a month on sale.

Rockstar can't confirm or deny reports that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is on its way to PlayStation 2.

Speaking to Eurogamer this morning, a spokesperson gave us the usual line about not being able to comment on "rumour and speculation".

In this case though, the rumour in question is based on a harder fact than the usual speculative retailer posting.

This time the Entertainment Software Rating Board in the US had been found listing a PS2 version of the game, suggesting it had been submitted for approval by its publisher.

The listing was then pulled, and Rockstar wouldn't be drawn on whether it was legitimate or not, or why it had been pulled.

Vice City Stories was the PlayStation Portable's biggest game of 2006, and continues to top Chart-Track's PSP Top 20.

However with the previous PSP title - Liberty City Stories - having already been ported to PS2 and released at budget price, rumours of its transition to Sony's current-gen format refuse to die out.

Expect to hear more if and when Rockstar has something to announce. ...

less than six months after the original version of the sequel, Samurai Warriors 2 Empires is due out here on 16th March.

Announced under the catchy promise that "Empires Strikes Back", the game nobody's calling SW2E is out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2.

Empires guarantees KOEI's trademark massive battlefield action with a bit more emphasis on the pre-war machinations of tactics and council. Before each battle, you'll be called to make account of yourself on issues of politics and military demeanour.

Once the waffling's out of the way you'll be able to take to one of the 25 warring states' battlefields and try and unite them by killing everyone who disagrees with you, through six regional scenarios and five unification scenarios, making use of 50 new policy cards based on Japanese history, 30 different tactics cards and around 400 playable characters.

You can also expect two-player co-op and a Free Mode, which allows you to pick any stage you like and just go at it. ...

If your built-in WiFi antenna is less than phenomenal, or you're just looking to jack some WiFi from another country to avoid severe punishment, Buffalo's AirStation WLI-U2-SG54HP might be the answer. This USB 2.0 stick adapter operates like any vanilla 802.11b/g wireless LAN adornment, but ups the ante by suctioning to the rear of your display and reportedly boosting your reception capability by 210-percent. Granted, we're not sure where the firm is deriving this lofty figure, but it's probably safe to assume that strapping a relatively large antenna on the back of your lappie will persuade a few more far away signals to come your way than your factory-installed alternative. So if you're looking for a way to extend that range (legally), or just enjoy having a tethered weapon at your disposal at all times, Buffalo's WLI-U2-SG54HP can be snapped up next month for ¥3,700 ($31)
