Source tells CVG that PS3 won't launch in Europe until September 2007 while Sony sticks to March release

Sony's head of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison recently told Official PlayStation Magazine that he wouldn't like to make any definitive statements about the March rollout for PS3.

Sony quickly followed that up with a statement re-confirming PS3 is on track for March 2007 across Europe. But speculation of a further delay just won't go away.

High placed sources within the industry have already been tipping April as a more realistic launch window the for console. But a source has told CVG that a PS3 delay as far back as September 2007 is now far more likely, pointing the finger of delay at - yes you guessed it - "component shortages". And let's face it, you don't launch a console in summer.

When contacted this morning a Sony UK spokesperson told CVG that "We're 100 percent on track for a March release".

    Source: CVG

Really can we believe Sony, first they say spring 2006, then world wide launch in Dec with over a million consoles ready, then they said 100,000 for Japan and 400,000 for the US, which, at this stage it seems they only had 80,000 for Japan and just over 200,000 for the US ready for launch.

It seems to me Sony think they can keep dangling the carrot in front of us, making and breaking promises like this. I hope for Playstation fans in Europe they for fill this promise. ...

Wii Play and Legend of Zelda most popular titles

Nintendo has announced that the Wii console has sold out in Europe, with 325,000 units snapped up in the two days following last Friday's launch.

That means the Wii now holds the title of fastest-selling home console in history across Europe - and not just in the UK.

First-party launch title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was a big hit with consumers, shifting 240,000 copies over the launch weekend - meaning 74 per cent of those buying a console also bought the game.

Mini-game collection Wii Play, which comes bundled with a remote controller, was bought by more than 50 per cent of Wii purchasers

"Wii has become an overnight success in Europe with people of all ages rushing out to get their hands on the console," said Nintendo Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer.

"Even at this early stage it is clear that Wii is delivering on its promise to expand the gaming market, with a uniquely diverse audience all keen to experience the sensation for themselves."

Due to high demand for the console shop shelves remain empty at present, but Fischer pledged, "For those who were unable to buy Wii during the launch weekend, rest assured more stock is already on its way.

"We are doing everything possible to ensure that a steady supply of Wii units is shipped to stores across Europe throughout December and into 2007."

The arrival of the Wii was heralded with a launch event at HMV's flagship branch last week.

"The demand for Wii has been truly amazing, and the official launch at our Oxford Street store was one of the biggest events we've ever staged there," said Tim Ellis, head of games for HMV.

"HMV has received รก huge amount of customer pre-orders - beyond anything we've ever seen before, including from family shoppers as well as dedicated Nintendo gamers.

"This suggests that while Wii is obviously one of the must-have items this Christmas, it also has the potential to appeal to a huge mainstream audience over the longer-term." (For more from Ellis, read our exclusive interview.)

The Wii launched in North America on November 19, where 600,000 consoles were sold in the first eight days following launch. It's also proved to be a hit in Japan, with the territory's allocation of 400,000 units flying off the shelves on day one.

Microsoft has announced that last week was a record breaker for Xbox 360 sales in Australia - despite the fact that the Nintendo Wii launched there on Thursday.

In the week ending December 10, AU$ 5.8 million (3.4 million Euro) worth of Xbox products were sold, according to GfK data. That figure includes consoles to the value of AU$ 2.6 million (1.5 million Euro) along with games and accessories.

The Wii launched on December 7 but according to David McLean, regional director for Xbox Australia and New Zealand, the arrival of Nintendo's new console had little impact on 360 sales.

"In terms of retail revenue, Xbox 360 has generated around AU $145 million [86 million Euro] in ANZ this year. Were pleased to report that despite new competition in the market, sales are showing no signs of slowing down," he commented.

"I put this down to a combination of three things - demonstrable value for money backed by powerful hardware, plus a huge range of next-generation games and accessories."

McLean went on to observe that Xbox 360 is the fastest-selling home console in Australia, with more than 100,000 units and 400,000 games sold since its March launch.

"The attach rate on Xbox 360 has reached a staggering 4.8 - around twice the attach rate of any console in history at this stage of the life cycle," McLean added.

Nintendo has yet to announce figures for Wii sales in Australia.

Since the last reporting period, sentiment for the Wii has slightly cooled off and is receiving more competition from the Xbox 360. Discussion levels for the Wii are much higher giving it the edge over the Xbox 360 and the top spot this week. Availability has been an issue as consumers are finding it difficult to obtain a Wii. However, purchase intent is high which stems mostly from positive discussion about the Wii’s innovative controller.

This week, sentiment for the Wii and Xbox 360 are similar but the Xbox 360 still trails the competition in discussion share resulting in a second place ranking. So far, Microsoft has managed to keep sentiments positive despite the hype surrounded by the Wii and PS3 launches. Online features, graphics, and game lineup represent the Xbox 360’s most significant strengths. Microsoft may currently ba benefiting from low availability of the Wii and PS3 as purchase intent increased 0.6 points from last week.

The PS3 is struggling to reverse negative perceptions of the console. In nearly every aspect, the console scores below the segment average. Discussion of the Cell Processor and graphics may be the key to changing consumer perceptions in the future as it currently represents its strengths. However, the PS3 has yet to convince consumers that the graphics are superior as sentiment scores still trail the Xbox 360 by 0.4 points — no improvement from last week.

    # The Wii continues to be in a strong position as discussion of the Wii-mote and Nunchuk controller have increased and remained positive. The revolutionary controller and low cost are what set the Wii apart from its competitors — this has been a popular starting point for positive discussion as the Wii’s purchase intent is generating similar amounts of discussion as the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined. However, while sentiment for purchase intent has increased, discussion share has decreased almost 10% since the previous reporting period. This may be due to low availability in retail stores and unimproved sentiments for graphics.

    # The Xbox 360 has continued to withstand hype surrounding the recent launches of the PS3 and Wii. It is receiving above average sentiment scores for 7 of the top 10 attributes. It continues to lead in availability sentiment and makes up almost 45% of all online features-related discussion, with 73% of that being positive. Game lineup and graphics also represent the Xbox 360’s strengths as it currently holds distinct advantages over the PS3 and Wii.

    # While the PS3’s graphics remain its highest-ranked attribute, it still falls behind the Xbox 360 which earned a 4.4 sentiment score compared to the PS3’s 4.0. The rest of the attributes continue to elicit negative discussion, though sentiment has seen a small increase across most of the top 10 attributes. Price/Value continues to be a major issue for the PS3 and it currently contributes to its overall low sentiment.

First announced on gbadev.org forums. I'll quote everything right here, for the lazy.

I grew tired of the only-one-screen-usage of DS Doom 1.0.0 and hacked along myself, adding a zoomable automap on the lower screen together with a whole lot of pretty features. I've had plenty of contact with the DS Doom developers WinterMute and TheCuckster and hoped I could apply the changes to SVN... Well until now, don't hear anything from them. I guess they don't like the changes or my code is too dirty or something, although wintermute was planning on creating an SVN account. Ah well.
You can download the 1.1.0 sourcecode and mess with it yourself, if you like to. I don't really care anymore, good luck with it. I've marked all my changes with comments "// Jefklak [date] [description]".

At least let me distribute this version so other people beyond myself can enjoy some more Doom on the Nintendo DS.

The PS3 has got a new update 1.31 and the Japan version is out.

It should be out for the US PS3's soon too. Well this seems to be becoming a regular feature of the week now that PS3 gets an update. Being updatable as a feature now seems like additional maintenance work. As if the Windows updates were
not already annoying this game machine too will now need udpates every now and then i suppose.

You can check the firmware details 1.31 at the URL below(a translation of the japanese contents actually)

It hasn't been tested on 2.0+ so I'd appreciate some info from you guys if you could. If there is enough interest I will continue to update periodically. I realize that there are plenty of bugs. I will hopefully fix them with another release.
