    Article From Joystiq

We've been wanting to put this post together for a while but always lacked the image to do it justice, so imagine our glee at spotting the advertisement at right while strolling through London's Soho district.

When the Xbox 360 launched in Japan, certain English-speaking bloggers jumped all over photographs like this one to support their claims that the Xbox 360 had been marked down to about $170 USD because retailers were desparate to rid themselves of inventory. At the time, we refused to blog about this, because we knew that retailers were not, in fact, discounting the Xbox 360 but were bundling it with a cell phone contract. Editorially, we felt that any site that picked up the story was doing its readers a disservice.

One site even used the photograph to support the following dramatic lead sentence, "The train wreck that is the 360 Japan Launch continues."

In fact, the photograph had nothing to do with the volume of Xbox 360 sales.
Fast forward to today. By that same (faulty) logic, some Japanese blogger visiting London this month will go back home and breathlessly report that PSPs are in such low demand in the UK that they're being given away totally and completely free of charge. (This is of course patently false, as a cell phone contract is very lucrative. Baiting customers with an attractive consumer electronics device is a tactic used the world over.)

The point is that the advert at right tells us nothing about how the PSP is faring in Europe. This isn't a post about the PSP at all. It's a post about English bloggers in Japan who mislead their readership about the state of affairs in Japan. The mere fact that retailers consider the PSP (or Xbox 360) to be good bait for a lucrative cellular contract is actually a positive indicator that implies that both devices are attractive to consumers.

Game Brink is hosting the official Final Fantasy III trailer, a remake of the original FF III on the DS. The entire 2-minute trailer consists of approximately 10 seconds of total gameplay footage. The majority of the trailer is pre-rendered CG and self-promoting hype. here's how the trailer breaks down:
0:00 to 0:36 -- Fluff text, decreeing this game as "The only Final Fantasy that never reached Western shores."
    00:37 to 00:45 -- hand-drawn artwork from the game.
00:46 to 1:19 -- Some beautiful CG work of the main characters riding Chocobos alongside a rising airship.
    1:20 to 1:31 -- Actual gameplay footage.
1:31 to 1:37 -- More CG, including our heros facing off against a giant Cerberus-style beast.
1:38 to 2:00 -- More fluff text: "Complete the Fantasy."
To be fair, the CG video was impressive and what we see of the gameplay we like. Final Fantasy III is due out late this year.

We've finally managed to get our hands on the first shots of Sonic Wild Fire, the new Sonic game that's currently in development for Wii.

Our hands-on with Sonic Wild Fire revealed that the game makes full use of the Wii remote. To guide Sonic through the level, you must hold the remote horizontally - like a set of handlebars - and tilt it left or right to steer him. To slow him down you must tilt the remote towards yourself; button 2 on the Wii-mote is used to jump and this can be combined with a thrust forward to execute Sonic's spinning attack.

In the shots on the right you can see a more sedate platforming bit with Sonic attempting to collect coins while avoiding some huge spikes. As Sonic teeters on the ledge the Wii controller is titled in time with his movements in order to get him to the end safely.

Wild Fire - currently the game's working title - is Sonic's first solo outing since the original Sonic the Hedgehog released for Mega Drive 15 years ago. It sees the prickly one trying to recreate the lost pages of an Arabian Knights story book which means the levels have a certain Arabic look to them, with colourful mosaics and oases.

John Carmack's new cell phone game Orcs and Elves, which debuted at E3 to some fanfare, has led the famous developer to think about expanding his mobile gaming presence. Carmack said in an interview with CNN that he is interested in a massively multiplayer sequel. 'I have absolutely no interest in going and competing with Blizzard in the high end of that market, but a cell phone version might be interesting,' Carmack is quoted as saying. Even more interesting is his comment in the interview that game engines really overlook security. The article indirectly quotes him as saying 'while id Software is especially careful to lock down its game engines, companies that license and make changes to those engines often aren't as focused, which could open the door to disaster. ...
