Sky Diving is the GBP 3.49 downloadable game star of this week's PlayStation Store update on PS3, while PSP owners can download the WipEout Pulse Mirage Pack if they fork out GBP 3.49 on the PSP Store for PC.

The second-most exciting thing on the PS3 Store this week is a pair of free DLC updates for two of Sony's best-supported games - Folklore and MotorStorm. The former, Game Republic's charming little blend of hackandslash and spooky adventure, says hello to a new Folk called Malion.

Interestingly, said Folk was actually designed to meet the specifications outlined by the winner of a competition for PlayStation.com forumites. "The Malion (Spore Lion) runs circles around the enemy whilst creating an intoxicating spore cloud from its tail and thorny mane," Jeff Read had explained. "When the prey is dazed The Malion jumps in for the kill. The tail and claws are primary attacks, but this Folk is highly poisonous... wear protective gloves! The Malion fears fire."

This was enough to dazzle Game Republic, with dev-head Yoshiki Okamoto praising the high standard of entries. "Congratulations to Jeff, the runners-up and all the people who took the time and effort to design a new Folk," he said. "We hope you enjoyed being creative and that you continue designing."

And so do we, because it's a nice thing to hope for. As for the MotorStorm treat we mentioned, it's the enigmatically monikered "MotorStorm Chinese New Year". Let us know what that one's all about in your usual special place.

Also among the downloadable treats for PS3 owners are European demos for Conflict: Denied Ops and Turok, both of which are due out on PS3 and other formats tomorrow, 8th February.

And if you absolutely can't bear to put the pad down, then Lost Planet and PixelJunk Monsters trailers are also there.

But no Everyday Shooter. Or PAIN. Come on, Sony! ...

The latest Japanese software sales chart has been released showing seven new entries in the top ten, including solid performances from the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Super Smash Bros Brawl knocked out the opposition in first place, outselling its nearest rival 4-to-1 on its debut, and shifting 820,000 units across the week ending February 3, according to data compiled by Media Create.

Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 was in second place, selling 205,000 copies, while PlayStation 2 pair Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut and Haruhi Suzumiya's Wonderment were third and fourth respectively.

The first non-new entry was Wii Fit in fifth place, with Disgaea 3 and the Xbox 360 edition of Devil May Cry 4 close behind.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympics for the Nintendo DS, Assassin's Creed for the PS3 and the latest Winning Eleven title for the PlayStation Portable rounded off the top ten.

That means that in the top ten there were six different platforms represented, and only three titles were Nintendo-based games - a turnaround from the beginning of the year as new games begin to hit the market.

The full top ten is as follows:

    1. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
    2. Devil May Cry 4 (PS3)
    3. Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut (PS2)
    4. Haruhi Suzumiya's Wonderment (PS2)
    5. Wii Fit (Wii)
    6. Disgaea 3 (PS3)
    7. Devil May Cry 4 (360)
    8. Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (DS)
    9. Assassin's Creed (PS3)
    10. World Soccer Winning Eleven: Ubiquitous Evolution 2008 (PSP) ...

PopCap co-founder John Vechey tells PocketGamer that crack-cocaine derivative Peggle will be available over-the-counter for DS sometime in the future. This follows the announcement in early January that Xbox 360 owners would be able to play the pachinko-style ball bouncer in glorious HD. Considering it's in line with PopCap's strategy, expect Peggle to eventually exist on every appropriate format possible – the article also alludes to a mobile version being in the works.

Vechey says Peggle has now outsold Bejeweled with over ten million downloads. He explains that the game's sales weren't doing well on many casual portals when it first released, but that PopCap kept promoting it on its website and the designer drug took off. We're just waiting for the day a PA (Peggle Anonymous) group pops up on our local community center's bulletin board. ...

Last year, Gamecock shocked the world by selecting one of the worst names possible for Spark Unlimited's new first-person shooter. Hearing of Gamecock's Legendary: The Box, giggles rippled through the IGN offices. Today, in announcing a release window for Legendary, Gamecock also removed "The Box" subtitle, making for a more appealing, albeit briefer, name. Legendary comes to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this summer.

"I'm happy to report that the team on Legendary is well on target for a simultaneous multi-platform launch this summer," said Rick Stults, Console Chief for Gamecock Media Group. "It's no easy feat to pull this off on a game of this caliber, but Spark Unlimited is a talented group."

"This is the project we want to be working on and it's shaping up to be something amazing," said Craig Allen, CEO of Spark Unlimited. "Legendary is the type of game we want every gamer, regardless of system allegiance, to get the chance to play. We're taking our time to ensure optimum performance, regardless of platform."

In Legendary, you play as Charles Deckard, a thief who opens Pandora's Box, allowing creatures from mythology to lay siege to New York. As Deckard, it's your job to pick up a gun and take down mighty minotaurs and raging werewolves. ...

An Edge interview with Grasshopper CEO Goichi Suda has recently been reprinted by NextGen, and features a few insights into Suda51's development of No More Heroes, as well as the punk-rock designer's future plans.

Regarding the Wii, Suda51 felt that No More Heroes was a unique opportunity to appeal to the wide user base for the console, and set out to make the title appeal to both hardcore gamers, and those that might be experiencing their first action game.

Beyond No More Heroes, Suda51 expresses interest in developing for the Xbox 360, citing the console's tremendous performance in the States. According to Suda, America is the "Major League" of game development, and it's a market he'd most definitely like to conquer. We'll just have to wait and see what his crazy brain cooks up next. ...

Namco Bandai Holdings has said it will close between 50 and 60, or roughly one-fifth of its arcades. "A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home," said a spokesman.

Wii seems to be being blamed more than the likes of PS3 and 360, especially with titles such as Wii Fit. A Reuters report suggests that it's not just the fact that console games are so good these days, it's also down to the fact that people would rather save their money for new games.

Oil prices are also having the finger of blame point prodding them as Japanese families, looking to save on gasoline, cut back on trips to shopping malls where the family-oriented arcades are waiting to guzzle your loose change.

For us it's not about oil prices or how awesome out home set up is these days, it's purely down to the fact that a go on the new After Burner arcade game will set you back two quid!

That and the tramps that hang out near the Trocadero. ...

THQ has sat us down and cleared up what sort of things you will be doing in new Wii title Band Mashups.

The idea is that you win a fight by doing your rhythm-action moves better than your opponent, much like battling in Guitar Hero. It looks similar, too.

However, here you will have various instruments like a sniper violin or flamethrower guitar that will ask for different moves to be matched by Wiimote gestures. And you can mix things up by switching the music to throw your opponents off.

THQ reckons there will be 70 ridiculous weapons in total, and around 150 songs covering the necessary vices of rock, funk, hip-hop, country, marching band and Latin.

There's a campaign where you pick one of 11 bands to tackle evil Mr. Hong [oops - Casual Racism Ed], as well as a versus mode to batter your friends.

Band Mashups is due out in April. ...

You wait for ages on some juicy info about Mario Kart Wii only to get nothing. Then, like a London bendy bus, two come at once - rolling over your feet in the process. We've now got word on how you can use your Mii in Mario Kart online.

On top of that, it's confirmed that as speculated the game features 32 tracks (16 new, 16 remakes), which include new courses "Mario Circuit, Momo Country, Kinopio Factory, DK Snowboard Cross, Coconuts Mall, Kinoko Canyon, and Luigi Circuit", an IGN translation reports.

It adds that players will be able to perform mid-air tricks on both karts and bikes, which when executed correctly will provide you with an extra speed burst when you hit the tarmac.

Mario Kart Wii supports up to 12 players, but extra info states that you'll be able to download the ghost data of other players' races and import it into the single-player game to race against.

There'll also be the option for a Mario Kart Channel on your Wii hub, which serves up both your own record lap times and a worldwide rankings board.

For the old skool, there'll also be a four-player split-screen mode. Wouldn't be Mario Kart without it, if you ask us.

If you missed the news yesterday, it appears that Mario Kart Wii will be playable via traditional control scheme in addition to using the Wii Remote, and that a beta test Nintendo Japan has advertised is rumoured to be for the game. ...

3D Realms has said that Duke Nukem 3D is definitely heading to Xbox Live Arcade.

Confirmation came from big shot Scot Miller, who told the Dallas Business Journal it would have co-operative play, online multiplayer, and potentially be available this year. What are you waiting for? Christmas?

"We're really excited about bringing classic Duke to the 360," said Miller. "We're talking to Microsoft about getting a release slot sometime this year."

We heard late last summer that 3D Realms was keen to port its old classic, and was just waiting on the go ahead from the platform holder.

Duke Nukem 3D appeared on PC back in 1996, and is a first-person shooter where you rid the world of an alien invasion.

Key to its success was its low moral values and gruff protagonist, who went around causing a bloody mess in strip clubs and the like. Pretty good looking for the time too, and devilishly fun in four-player LAN mode. ...
