Red-haired Nariko is a feisty one. She's got swords and she doesn't hesitate to go berserk and wreck a few blokes... just for fun.

Or maybe the storyline has something to do with revenge, an invading king with an army of millions and some ancient sword that cannot be used by mere mortals.

Either way, Heavenly Sword is good fun, and we say that BEFORE attempting to stand Nariko in a corner and swivel the camera to get a good view of her perked, polygonal ass.

You know you've all done it in Tomb Raider.

Yoshiki Okamoto has created one of the PS3's most intriguing fantasy adventures in Folklore, and this latest trailer gives you look at what's in store.

Okamoto is best known for his previous masterpieces Onimusha, Devil May Cry and of course Resident Evil, and his talents show in Folklore - the dark characters look like something out of a children's program, but have an air of mystery about them that's slightly sinister.

The plot? "Set in the mysterious town of Doolin, two strangers, Keats and Ellen, are drawn together to uncover a mysterious legend in a remote village that exists on the border between dreams and reality. They soon learn that the town serves as a gateway to fantastic realms, full of creatures, spirits and monsters. In order to solve the mystery of the town, and their past, the pair must journey through these worlds to uncover its secrets."

To understand what PAIN's all about, you're actually best off watching the first trailer from the game which is in our video player yonder right.

In a nutshell, it involves firing a character from a launching device and attempting to score points by stringing together painful collisions with a physics-powered environment.

Sony promises it'll be funny, in the way the FlatOut series elicits a chuckle or two in the fling-driver-through-windscreen minigames, we guess.

Anyway, watch the trailer. There's no release date as yet.

In a first for console-based games, the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament III will be fully compatible with user-created content designed for the PC version.

It has been the done thing on PC for years that users create and import their own content into their games, including levels, weapons, characters, music and more, and Epic's push to bring the modding scene to the console is a significant revelation for console gamers.

Epic is currently testing transferring mod files from PC onto the PS3 via a memory stick, but wants to streamline the process further to remove the need for a PC altogether.

Maybe a PS3-compatible website hosting all the mods is a possibility, or an in-game online downloads menu.

It is said to be highly unlikely that this feature will ever make it to the Xbox 360 version.

UT3 is exclusive to PS3 this year on console. PS3 and PC versions are out November, with the Xbox 360 version coming in 2008. ...

It's speculated that winter '07 may see the first price cut for Xbox 360.

Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president Shane Kim has spoken of the need for Microsoft to steer toward a mass-market price for its console and how it's extremely important for Xbox 360 to win this Christmas, 1UP reports.

Speaking about the mass-market price sweet spot, Kim said that previously a considerable percentage of overall business has occurred when consoles have hit $199 or below, but added that what's happened historically won't necessarily dictate mass-market pricing today.

"If you look back in history - again, it's not just going to follow what's in history - in some cases, 75 to 80 percent of the business gets done $199 and below. So, we're not quite there yet", Kim said.

"I think that number can change over time because of inflation, greater capabilities; what we can do what Xbox 360, even the core system, is far beyond what you could do before in previous generations. Who knows? Maybe $249 will be a mass-market price point - but historically, $199 has been when you're talking a PlayStation 2-like install base. 80 percent of the business gets done at $199 and below. We're like the other guys, right?"

Kim went on to explain that Microsoft is trying to drive costs out of the system as much as possible "so we can hit those price points."

Earlier this week reports hit that Microsoft's production cost initiative with Xbox 360 has been codenamed Falcon, with a revised model said to feature new central and graphics processors that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process (as opposed to the older 90-nanometer processors in current models).

When asked whether Microsoft is going to move toward a mass-market price with Xbox 360 this year, Kim replied, "Stay tuned".

    So, ah, stay tuned. ...

Take-Two has demonstrated several of its upcoming titles at an E3 press conference, including the first live public demo of GTA IV.

The brief GTA IV demo consisted mostly of driving around Liberty City, which was described as "similar in scope to GTA: San Andreas, but intense in details, not only horizontally but vertically."

GTA IV is one of the most anticipated titles of the year and will be released on 16th October for Xbox 360 and PS3. The company said that they are not resting on their laurels, but are looking to redefine the genre that they, themselves, "created many years ago".

"We think it is going to set a new standard in interactive entertainment," said Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick.

BioShock, from 2K Games, was also demonstrated. This "genetically-enhanced" FPS from Irrational Studios will be launching in August for Xbox 360 and PC. "We think this is going to be a terrifically successful new franchise for Take-Two," said Zelnick.

Creator Sid Meier was on hand to demonstrate Civilization: Revolution, the latest instalment in the series which has sold over 8 million units to date. His goal is to make strategy a leading genre on consoles, and as a result, the game has been given a brand-new look with vibrant, emotional, and entertaining characters.

"Console players don't want to read manuals. They don't want to study to learn how to play the game," said Meier.

Civilization: Revolution will ship in spring 2008 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, with a DS version to follow in the autumn.

Finally, 2K Sports demonstrated their upcoming All-Pro Football 2K8 game, the company's first American football title since NFL 2K5, which sold over 3 million units worldwide. As the NFL licence is still exclusive to EA's Madden franchise, All-Pro Football allows players to customize the look of their teams and stack the roster with over 240 gridiron legends, taking them online to complete against other customized teams. The game ships next week on PS3 and Xbox 360.

"We want to be the most creative company in our industry, the most innovative company in our industry, and the most efficient company in our industry," said Zelnick.

Take-Two did not show or discuss Manhunt 2, leaving its future still up in the air. ...

Nintendo 64 RPG classic Paper Mario has joined the Wii Virtual Console line-up today.

The addition of the 2001 classic brings the number of N64 titles available via the Wii Shop to six, joining Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Lylat Wars and F-Zero X. Each costs 1000 points to download, which equates to about GBP 7 - or just over 10 Euros.

Back in the day Tom awarded the game a whopping 9/10, commenting that it was "the best RPG on the Nintendo 64, and acts as a superb gateway to the genre," and "an RPG rich with ingenuity and style" with "all-important Mario moments that only a true fan will understand."

He even said, back in October 2001, that people should "buy it and forget about the GameCube". Now that it's about one eighth of its original £60 price tag (dear god), we reckon this one might prove a popular download, especially with the long-awaited Super Paper Mario arriving on Wii here in Europe in two months time.

In the meantime, you might want to trawl the bargain basement for 2004 Cube classic Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door. Another game Tom dished out a rare 9/10 to, and fully compatible with the Wii, of course.

Elsewhere on the VC service this week is Air Zonk, a TG-16 game from 1992. Said to be a side-scrolling shooter, our friendly neighbourhood Wikipedia entry claims the game is "widely considered to be an excellent shoot 'em up." We'll be putting it through its paces ourselves today, and bringing you another VC round-up tomorrow morning to find out if they're talking a load of rose-tinted rubbish. As ever, 600 points is the fee for this slice of retro blastery.

We're losing count a little bit, but with think this pairing brings the European VC total up to 105. Not bad going, Nintendo, but some free trials would be nice. ...

Admist all the E3 hype and fluff, Microsoft snuck out the latest of its Backward Compatibility updates, with some of the very best Xbox games ever made now fully compatible with the Xbox 360.

Top of a lot of people's (i.e. Tom's) list will be OutRun 2 and its delightful follow-up OutRun 2006: Coast To Coast, but even better (in my opinion) is the news that Project Gotham Racing and Project Gotham Racing 2 have finally joined the BC list. About time too. Really.

Elsewhere on the list, Oblivion fans looking for another Xbox RPG fix might want to check out The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. We gave it a respectable 8/10 upon its PC release five years ago, and many RPG fans rate it extremely highly. I picked up a copy on Xbox for £3 recently, so have a poke around in the bargain buckets and see what you reckon.

Also worth checking out is the original Burnout - but maybe only to remind yourself just how far the series has come. Other items of interest are Doom III: Resurrection of Evil, Full Spectrum Warrior: 10 Hammers, Jet Set Radio Future (which was supposed to work last time around, but didn't), Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Mech Assault 2, MotoGP 2, Silent Hill 2, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X and 3.

In total, the list has grown by almost 70 titles, although, to be honest, most of these newly compatible games are ones you'd never want to darken your doorstep ever again. Blinx 2? Without Warning? Rogue Ops? Bloodrayne 2? Auto Modelista? Nurse!

For the full list, head to the official site, though bear in mind this is the US list. No-one's bothered to update the UK list yet, but they're generally identical from our experience.

We really do wish someone from the BC team would finally sort out Project Zero for Europe, though. Are you reading Microsoft? What about Rallisport Challenge 2? Psi Ops? Kung Fu Chaos? Freedom Fighters? Oddworld Stranger's Wrath? Otogi? Midtown Madness 3? Galleon? Indiana Jones? Voodoo Vince? Deus Ex Invisible War? TOCA Race Driver 2 or 3? ...

In all the furore of E3 you may have overlooked the release of four new demos for download from Xbox Live.

The first of these is Blue Dragon, weighing in at a hefty 1.1GB of virtual mass. It gives you the chance to try out Microsoft's big JRPG flag-waver in two dungeons, each filled with Mecha Robos and the rather plainly named Ancient Monsters.

It's already been released in Japan and received an alarmingly positive critical reception. However, Rob Fahey wasn't as bowled over when he got to play the game recently. A difference of tastes? Now you can find out.

The full game is due out here on 24th August - pop over to our first impressions of Blue Dragon for more information.

Next up on Live is a demo for smash and crash title Stuntman: Ignition. This taster is a little smaller at 642MB, and lets you pop on your protective gear to try out the thrills and spills of being a Stuntman driver. The full version is out on 31st August and Ellie had a look at it earlier this year. Pop over to her preview to see what she thought.

Meanwhile, a demo of Ace Combat 6 was also released earlier this week - Namco's latest addition to its flight action series. Signed earlier this year by Atari, we've got a bunch of trailers and screenshots of the 360 exclusive for you to enjoy, too. Go see.

Last of the bunch is Surf's Up, the game of the upcoming animated film featuring surfing penguins - which actually looked quite good in the trailer, er, a friend told me. It's 668MB in girth and we have absolutely no idea what to make of it - probably why there's now a demo. ...
