    via Gears of Wars forums

The next title update for Gears of War is currently going through the certification process. We'll have more detail about the update next week but I can tell you that in addition to fixing a whole bunch of glitches, and providing 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024, it will contain a brand new multiplayer gametype called Annex.

Some folks who got to play it a few weeks ago said they think it is our best multiplayer gametype yet but I'll leave it for you fans to decide what you think for yourself when it shows up soon on Xbox Live. More details next week. ...

While you've undoubtedly gotten your fair share of "multi-console" info on THQ's SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 yesterday in our exclusive interview, the brief chat we had with THQ reps was - while very informative - not too DS-friendly. New details emerged regarding the main career mode, the amount of effort going into the pure realism in this year's brawler, but tasty bits of info for pocket fans was left for another day. Apparently that day came sooner than we thought though, as THQ has revealed a few new details on the DS version today in the Grand Ballroom of the Atheneum Suite Hotel here in Detroit.

Tecmo gathered members of the press in Tokyo today to formally announce its upcoming lineup for the DS and PS3. While the focus of the event, at least as far as the television cameras were concerned, was on the first title, a new DS adventure game called DS Nishimura Kyotaro Suspense (we'll have details shortly), gamers everywhere are probably more interested in what came after -- a first look at Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword!

In case you haven't been checking IGNDS daily like a good little ninja, here's a brief update. Tecmo finally unveiled Team Ninja's top-secret DS project to the world this past week, and in the shocker of all shockers, it's a new entry in the Ninja Gaiden series. And a 3D entry, no less! To recap our initial preview, the game is meant to be played almost entirely with the stylus, with players tapping and slashing the screen to guide Hayabusa, shoot shurikens and slice up enemies.

Producer Tomonobu Itagaki was at the press conference, and as one would expect, he let the game do most of the talking through a live demonstration of a single level of play. This level started outdoors. After taking out a few enemies, Itagaki proceeded in-doors for a few more fights before facing off against a giant spider-like boss.

Nintendo Japan has announced its Virtual Console lineup for April, and there seems to be enough material to restart classic system wars. PC Engine fans can look forward to more Bonk, his late-life sidekick, Zonk, and Bloody Wolf. Sega fans can look forward to Rent a Hero. Nintendo fans? How do Punch Out, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fight and Star Fox 64 sound?

Here's what the April lineup looks like in its entirety.

    FAMICOM
    Punch Out (Nintendo, 500 points)
    Elevator Action (Taito, 500)
Ninja Ryuukenden (aka Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo, 500)
Meikyuu Kumikyoku (aka Milon's Secret Castle, Hudson, 500)
    Gradius 2 (Konami, 500)

    SUPER FAMICOM
Hercules no Eikou III (Pione, 800)
    Final Fight (Capcom, 800)
    Kirby Bowl (Nintendo, 800)

    NINTENDO 64
    Star Fox 64 (Nintendo, 1000)

    MEGA DRIVE
    Rent A Hero (Sega, 600)
    Puyo Puyo Tsu (Sega, 600)
    Pulseman (Sega, 600)
    Bahamut Senki (Sega, 600)

    PC ENGINE
    Final Soldier (Hudson, 600)
Narazumono Sentou Butai Bloody Wolf (G-Mode, 600)
PC Genjin 2 (aka Bonk's Revenge, Hudson, 600)
Kaizou Choujin Shubibiman 2 (aka Shockman, Hudson, 600)
    Benki Gaiden (Sunsoft, 600)
PC Denjin (aka Air Zonk, Hudson, 600)

That's a whole lot of gaming in just one month. We'll close as always by offering the futile hope that most of these titles will make a quick trip to territories outside of Japan. ...

Latest News from the CnC DS Project:

There’s been a problem processing my new internet account so it’s going to be a little longer before I’m online which is rubbish. In the mean time here’s an update:

I’ve got some new GUI controls working including a tick box and a new ‘popup’ style GUI base class. Right now I have a popup colour chooser and a popup list control. Basically when you select that GUI item it displays a nearly full screen popup that lets you edit it. So normally with the list you see a single item, click it and the list of items appears you can choose from.

I’ve tied this in with the new WIP skirmish settings screen and you can now enter and leave a mission, though this is still unrefined but basically working. I haven’t done much checking for memory leaks but it’s looking pretty good so far.

Now the next part.. and I apologise because this is going to sound a pain to some people! I’ve started to put together all the editing tools (think map editor, unit editor and image convertor) for the game engine into a single C# application (yes it’s dot net). For those who remember I used to be doing this with Blitz but that has turned out to be a bad decision.. though it looked very pretty it was becoming very tedius to add to it. Now with the C# I can get loads of it done really quickly. I’ve been really impressed with how easy it is to do a lot of stuff. Though I don’t think I’d use this for a game for a PC tool its perfect.

I’ve started to lay the groundwork for some of the pretty graphics but I was relying on the net for this and so it’s going slowly

Grizzly Adams has released a new version of his Wii Menu Clone for the Nintendo DS:

    Spread the Word

Its a clone of the Wii channels menu, on a smaller scale, with some artistic license taken. Right now its main purpose is to launch NDS files. Each program should have an 80x48 pcx icon in the qlshell/icons folder for it (not many icons have been made yet!) Soon I'll add a feature to load the icons from the same folder as the nds file, and also to load icons from within the nds file if all other attempts fail. I've got to recreate my source images for the skins because I recently had my primary hdd fail.

This should work for most cards, Don't bother reporting here that it works unless someone has already reported it doesn't. I'm interested in bug reports, so send away! Also, just so everyone knows, it doesn't have pen input yet.

    Future plans:
    Slot 1 / Slot 2 booting

    Settings menu

Download channel (a separate app, usable on its own or together with DSChannels)

For now DSChannels only indexes nds files under the /Applications or /Apps folders on your card. You should be able to nest a level or two deep, but keep in mind that will increase scanning time at boot, and you cannot ever exceed the pathlimit of 255 characters (240 to be safe) including slashes and periods.
