Sony today cut its PSP shipment target to 9 million units, but that hasn't stopped the company from redesigning its portable, according to American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy. In fact, McNealy expects two flavors of PSP next year. [Update: Sony responds]

P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research has today sent us a number of interesting points about Sony's three gaming platforms. Perhaps most notable is that the analyst believes Sony is actively working on introducing a new PSP by next spring.

"Sony will likely introduce a refresh of the PSP hardware line, including a hard-disk drive PSP and a second PSP with no hard drive but with a significant amount of flash memory on board," he said. "We expect these products in Spring 2007, with the pricing for the hard-drive based model at $199 or above, and the new flash-based one below $199."

As for the company's ubiquitous PlayStation 2, McNealy believes that a new limited edition version of the console will be released during this quarter. With the PS3 in short supply and Sony emphasizing the 10-year lifecycle of its PS2, it wouldn't be surprising to see them try to spark PS2 sales this holiday as well with a new limited edition.

With regards to the PS3, McNealy noted that the company's marketing blitz for the next-gen console is getting underway.

"Sony is bulking up its marketing at retail for the PS3, helping to explain the value proposition of the PS3 and putting 15,000 PS3 units for hands-on game play at retail in North America between the end of October and likely Black Friday, the retail day after Thanksgiving. We expect online capabilities to some degree for these boxes as well, which could likely be packaged for display at retail with Sony high-definition Bravia TV sets. We believe this type of vertical packaging is a win-win for both Sony and the retailers such as TGT, BBY, CC and WMT," he said.

[UPDATE] While speaking with SCEA vp of marketing Peter Dille today, we took the opportunity to question him on the analyst report concerning a new PSP.

"I've heard about that, but haven't seen that report. This would fall into the 'We do not comment on rumor or speculation' category, which I know is kind of the canned line, but honestly we don't have anything to add to that," Dille told GameDaily BIZ.

He continued, "What we're thinking is that the PSP has a very long life ahead of it. It's off to a great start; it's one of our fastest growing platforms. All of our consumer research shows that people love the system, and really what we're focused on is educating consumers about a lot of the multifunctionality that exists in the system. People have bought this system primarily to play games, and that's what it is first and foremost, but being able to download content, access the web, access music or videos on the system as well as some of the cool features we talked about tying into the PS3. Those are the things that we're focused on, and we believe that the PSP has a very strong and long life ahead of it. "

    News from Lik Sang

This week's big new release is the US edition of a unique NDS role playing game, Contact. Before we get to it though, on the topic of different DS titles, recently SNK revealed Dokidoki Majosaiban (translated; Exciting Witch Trials), and as bizarre as Japanese games have always gotten, we're still surprised by them. Utilizing your stylus on girls with, as they say, "throbbing witch judgment", you search suspected witches. The first screenshot is shown below on the left, but we also have some concept fan art inspired with the idea of a sequel on the Wii; a job for another Mini Skirt Police title perhaps?

    Contact - NDS (US)

The DS's original abilities have touched various genres to date, and now it's time to do the same for an RPG. Titled Contact, you yourself are the central character in the adventure designed by Gouichi Suda of Killer 7 fame, with characters born out of Atsuko Fukushima who's worked on everything from PoPoLoCrois on PSP, to movies like Akira and Kiki's Delivery Service. Events kick off when a professor takes a boy named Terry around the galaxy in his space ship, but trying to escape a terrorist, they crash land on an unknown planet. Separated, the only link between them is you and your DS. The professor talks to you from the top screen, giving you directions to help Terry on the lower screen. Using your stylus you interact with the characters and try to help them locate the pieces of the ship’s power source.

There's plenty of real time battles to fight along the way, and various stickers are used to power up and unleash special attacks. Then there's animal-training, item-collecting, monster-hunting, and retro style mini-games to enjoy. By switching Terry's costumes it gives him new abilities too, for example opening up the skills to be a chef, a fisherman, a firefighter, a pilot or others. Over the Wi-Fi, if your friends have a copy they'll be transformed into NPC's on your own game. They'll then have the power to level up specific skills, give you rare items, or just make fun of you when you mess up. A fresh and lighthearted RPG, the US edition of Contact is in stock this week and like every DS title, it's region free and will work on every handheld the whole world over. ...

In what appears to be the final news conference for Sony and the PS3 they announced some key bits of news. Here's the full story from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6160127.html

Notables include that the first 500,000 PS3's in North America will ship with a Blu-Ray copy of Talladega Nights, online information (mostly what I was expecting: free, video chatting, friends, blah blah blah), lots of trailers, the controller battery lasts for 30 hours which makes the 1000 charge limit give it 30,000 hours of life (which is also 1250 days which is also 3 years and 5 months), and much more. Post what you think is most notable because I'm sure I am leaving things out. ...

Smurph has released a pre-release of Super Mario Wars 1.7a in our forums here

For some reason, my 1.7a port runs decent... It just has memory consumption problems. It's playable, just don't expect more than 1 or 2 games before crashing.

I need to start work on it again... but until I do, here's a little pre-release, I guess.

Coinciding with our earlier reports of Sony's downward revisions to its year 2006 earnings forecast comes news of another downward revision, this time concerning the PSP. Sony has lowered its shipping forecast for the system for the fiscal year from the initial target of 12 million units down to 9 million.

As part of its earnings revision statement earlier today, Sony cited the poorer-than-expected performance for the PSP as one of the main reasons for a drop in expected operating profit for its game division. Other reasons were the recent lowering of the PS3's price in Japan and the inclusion of HDMI ports in all PS3 models.

The PSP isn't on its last legs yet, though. Sony's Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda made mention today of a rethinking of PSP strategy, stating "We'll have to increase the ways of enjoying the PSP, with the development of software and peripherals. Sony Computer Entertainment is currently investigating solutions."

While the company dropped its estimate for PSP shipments, it stood firm on its PS3 shipment targets of 6 million by the end of March 2007.

Why are people down on the PSP, yep sure it hasnt beaten the DS but lets be honest Sony are taking on the runaway kings of handheld consoles and have done a great job in giving the DS a good run for its money, seems like the press should remember that. ...

Sonys battle with Lik Sang over the selling of PSPs really got my back up, when companies such as Sony piss us off and yes mainly thats people in the UK and Europe by making us wait up to 6 months for a console release.

Why should we have to see fellow gamers in Japan and the USA enjoy the latest consoles and games and be told to wait like children.

In the article today Sony said this

"Ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty."

Ok so lets be damned honest. Most that import consoles know you need a converter for power, its not rocket science, we also know that apart from handhelds that there will be some problems with games or films that are region specific.

Why do companies such as Sony etc think that the Gaming public is thick, if we as a community want to import then we should bloody be allowed to.

All of my recent consoles have been either from Japan or the USA mostly because the UK is the Taxshithole of the world, if i can buy say a Wii console from the USA for a big saving then i will and the same goes for games, a 40 pound game in the UK will cost say 20 pounds plus delivery from the US/Japan, so you can see why so many import in the first place.

Another factor is that the UK/Europe always and that goes for every console ever released misses out on some great games that never get released here.

Anyone else got views on the Whole Import Gaming Buisness, for and against then please say your views via the comments ...
