You know that feeling when you're trying to buy something at a store, but the clerk follows your every move making you feel like you're about to gank something? Sucks, doesn't it? Well that might be the case this fall when play testing the Wii at some retail stores. Says Nintendo VP George Harrison in speaking with IGN:

"We have spent considerable time designing in-store displays that will best showcase the Wii console's unique games and provide an entertaining experience for players while still fitting well into a retail environment. Wireless controllers will be used and we are asking retailers to have staff available to help consumers have a successful first experience with Wii."

Asking retailers is one thing. Doing is another, especially on a retailer's dime. (Who's gonna staff someone full-time to safeguard Wiimotes or help swing a virtual tennis racket?) Even if demo units feature wireless controllers, expect tethers for convenience and to discourage cleptos, at least as a store policy. ...

Sony's downloadable games service for PlayStation 3 will not follow the same route as Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade - which just recently played host to classic shooter Doom - and will aim to offer high quality new titles instead of trawling videogames from the past.

"Sony [has] less product but it is higher quality than Xbox Live downloads," says Philip Oliver, CEO of Blitz Games, which has recently founded new division Blitz Arcade to concentrate on downloadable games. Sony is "not going to go the retro route," Oliver explains during an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, "in fact [it wants] its games to be around the same price but to be higher quality".

To do this, Sony is setting higher memory limits for developers than Microsoft does for Xbox Live, prompting the development of new, hi-def arcade titles and steering away from re-purposing retro games. "It's setting the entry barrier higher, which we don't have a problem with because we want to do high-end games," Oliver adds.

As we saw yesterday, Sony's first wave of online games look both familiar (Blast Factor) and intriguingly fresh (Flow). And, although we love Doom and can think of a dozen old-school titles that we'd rush to download from Xbox Live Arcade, Sony deserves a pat on the back for trying to encourage an exciting stream of brand new, quick-access gaming action. Will it work out? We'll just have to wait and see. ...

PlayStation 3's wireless SixAxis pad will not come with a replaceable battery, Sony has confirmed.

This means that, unlike Xbox 360 controllers which feature removable battery packs, SixAxis pads that reach the end of their chargeable lifetime will become effectively useless as wireless controllers - although you should still be able to play with them by using the USB cable.

You can expect to pay at least as much for a PS3 pad as you do right now for a PS2 one and, although each wireless joypad will more than likely handle over a 1,000 charges - like most traditional rechargeable batteries - should your controller develop a charge problem then you'll be forced to shell out for a whole new one. Hopefully Sony will offer at least a year's warrantee on each pad, though.

Of course, like iPods which also have no removable battery packs, we imagine third-party replacement batteries will spring up. Although, as anyone who's ever wrecked their MP3 player by trying to replace the battery themselves will tell you, it's no easy task.

Should Sony offer a battery replacement service? We think so, but what about you? Why not hit the forums and unleash your opinion? ...

    News via Eurogamer

Nintendo has announced some DS game release targets for early 2007, and slipped a few of its planned Q4 2006 releases into the near year as well.

Mario Slam Basketball (the game known as Mario Hoops 3-on-3 in the US) had been down for a 10th November release, but is now listed as Q1 2007, while both Star Fox Command (previously 24th Nov) and Actionloop (previously 27th Oct) are now due out on 26th January 2007.

It's hardly a barren landscape between now and the end of the year though, with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Yoshi's Island 2 still down for 10th November and 1st December respectively, and Tenchu Dark Secret added for 24th November.

Moving into Q1, Nintendo has a wider range of software, including key third-party titles like Children of Mana (Square-Enix) and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All (Capcom). Diddy Kong Racing DS, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, Pokémon Ranger, Harvest Moon DS and Magical Starsign are all also listed for Q1 2007.

Nintendo also plans to release the pink edition of the DS Lite console itself on 27th October, as previously announced. ...

Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi has defended the decision to offer a lot of the Xbox Live Arcade version's content as downloadable extras rather than including them in the full game.

Lumines Live launched yesterday, and is the joint most expensive game on the service at 1200 Microsoft points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 13.96), but it's the manner in which Q Entertainment asks users for extra investment to customise the game that's drawn early criticism.

An "Advance Pack" (as-yet unreleased) will cost 600 Microsoft points (GBP 5.10 / EUR 6.98) while other game modes feature only a handful of levels, and prompt the gamer to watch out for further downloadable add-ons in future.

Mizuguchi told IGN that one reason for the download/pricing strategy was technical ("We have to include everything in 50MB") but that the other reason was the desire to let people customise Lumines. "We want people to look at Lumines and, depending on the artist, or the season, or the music, we want to give them different reasons to consider buying the game," he explained.

Future updates may add additional features as well as skins (which add new music and backgrounds, and also vary gameplay conditions), he said. "Maybe there will be new ways that we erase the blocks in the future. Maybe we add different shapes or forms or colors; right now there are no limits or boundaries. Maybe users might give us new ideas. We're hoping to hear from users what they would like to see in future updates, in fact. They will help guide us to create new updates," he added.

The veteran designer also said that it might be possible in future to support more than two people in the game's online multiplayer mode. "Maybe in the future four players will work," he told IGN. "We even tested with six to eight players, and we didn't accomplish the ideal scenario with that many players, so at this point we just aren't satisfied with what we came up with. So for now it's a two-player game." ...
