    From Slashdot

A Sony spokeswoman has actually admitted they will stop crippling the PSP's RSS functionality if enough customers ask for it." From the article: "SCEI will consider adding compatibility for RSS text feeds should users request it, said Nanako Kato, a spokeswoman for SCEI in Tokyo. The support for podcasts allows users to stream audio content to the PSP. The system supports feeds compatible with RSS 2.0 and encoded in the MP3 or AAC (MPEG4) formats. The firmware update also added support for Windows Media Audio files, direct download of copy-protected content through the PSP's Web browser, and Chinese-language character encoding." We just mentioned the rollout of the limited RSS functionality they already support ...

    Squidge has posted this info/news:

Ok, I wrote some benchmarking stuff today (calculating prime numbers using square roots) to give the 2x a bit of a performance test, and see how the two processors compare.

Running the test on the 920, it completes in 17.2 seconds.
Running the test on the 940, with the 920 twiddling it's thumbs, it completes in 17.1 seconds.
Running the test on both processors (interleaving, so each does exactly half the work load), it completes in 8.9 seconds.

I think this proves that the second processor is all but useless

Now, all we need to do is spread big loops that don't rely on results from a previous loop, over both processors using a similar technique.

I've still got to test memory bandwidth - accessing memory with the 920, 940, and then both together. So keep your ears open for the results of that test ...

OCprojects have written an excellent article detailing the first year of the PSP, the article talks about the Homebrew Development, Games, accessories and what the future holds,

    Heres an excerpt:

It has been nearly a year since Sony introduced its first handheld console, the Playstation Portable, to the consumer and much has happened in that time. Going up against Nintendo in the handheld market seemed by many to be a fool's errand. Fortunately for Sony they were able to pull through the first year with only minor battle scars. The PSP did better than any other non-Nintendo portable in recent memory, but to say that the PSP dominated at retail would not just be a blatant over-exaggeration, but completely and utterly wrong.

So what exactly has happened in the first year of the PSP's life? Plenty of stuff – some good, some bad, and yes, some ugly. In this article we will be taking a retrospective look at the PSP's first 12 months and also do a little speculating on the PSP's future. The PSP still has quite a bit of untapped potential and with some luck (and brains) Sony might be able to have quite a successful first outing in the handheld game space. While this editorial as a whole may seem negative, the truth is that I am a little annoyed with Sony and how they handled the PSP. Here they have a perfectly capable platform with which to ‘wow' gamers with jaw-dropping games never before dreamed about on a handheld, and they kind of blew it. That said, it has only been a year, and the PSP still has 80% left of its lifecycle to turn things around.

So lets take a look at the PSP - Year One.

The guys over at GameShout are reporting that the PlayStation 3 will be delayed until Spring 2007. The evidence in their article, to me, doesn’t seem all that convincing, but to quote,

“At first, we here at GameSHOUT thought that this was pure speculation, or rumours. But, about 2 weeks ago, the BBC news was covering the Digital Life Expo at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. They stated that the PlayStation 3 launch date is 2007.

The actual quote is, ‘By launching its new Xbox 360 22 months ahead of the PlayStation 3, it's hoping it'll be able to win over the minds and money of gamers’, said BBC.” ...

Unless you've been living in a Buddhist Temple in the mountains of Tibet for the past few months you will be well aware that the Xbox 360 has launched in the UK. Although there has been a massive amount of coverage and speculation in the technology press regarding the 360, the general marketing has been slightly subdued. OK, so you may have seen the odd advert on TV over the past couple of weeks, but there hasn't been what I'd call a major marketing push. Perhaps Microsoft is waiting for Christmas to spend the marketing dollars, or perhaps the it knows that pretty much every 360 is going to sell on launch day whether it advertises it or not.

When Microsoft launched the original Xbox at the end of 2001 I flew to New York to pick up a console, because the UK release date was several months after the US launch. Thankfully this time Microsoft hasn't made us Brits wait too long to get our hands on the goodies - a wait of a couple of weeks is bearable, and definitely doesn't warrant a trans-Atlantic crossing...

It's clear that Microsoft isn't willing to let history repeat itself with the 360, which is why the console is launching well before Sony gets the PlayStation 3 onto the streets. In fact, the PS3 won't be hitting Japan until spring 2006, so it's not likely to make it over to the UK until this time next year, giving the 360 a full 12 months to build up a healthy user base. In some respects I feel quite sorry for the outgoing Xbox, because some of the recent titles look truly stunning, showing that the machine is far from the end of its lifecycle. But ultimately Microsoft knows that if it wants to win the next console battle it needs to hit hard, and more importantly, hit first.

So, is the 360 worth shelling out your cash for? The simple answer is yes - actually that should be YES! The 360 really is an impressive bit of kit in so many ways, but let's talk specifics.

    Hi guys,
I'm new here, my friend reccomended me. I currently do not have a PS2 slim but I AM buying one, I assure you. I've read this other thread:

    http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...hreadid=570039 *nine months old*

and it says Pacific Mall is a bad place to get a PS2 slim modded because it burns the laser out, I don't know if this is still true as it's December now.

I go to Pacific Mall quite often and I don't really care if the mod chip they give me is a clone, as long as it works and does not damage my PS2 slim in any way.

Are their any other places to get it modded in Toronto? Where would I go? How much? The main thing is that it doesn't damage the PS2 slim, I want it to work for years

I'm also willing to buy a new PS2 slim from the store which mods it, to get a discount on the modding process. One of my friends said that Pacific offers a modded (brand new) PS2 Slim with 2 controllers and 2 games (copied probably -_- - I do not endorse piracy lol) for $250. I'd definately buy this but who knows about their modding process, I don't want the laser or anything to be damaged.

So, ultimately, the question is - where do I get my PS2 (SLIM!!) modded without damaging the system short term or long term. I'd really appreciate any responses and thanks for reading all this...

    - djsupes

P.S: Please, be sure - I really don't want to break such an expensive product.

Oh, and I want to play all 'c0pi3d' games (including Japanese imports such as Naruto), etc. free of hassle (no swapping or anything, just as if I were to put the original in).

    Thanks! ...

ZodttD has released a new Version of his Playstation Emulator that plays movies smoothly and RUNS GAMES WITH UP TO 60fps with Frameskip3

    Heres what he posted:

    Hi again,

I've updated GP2PSX to version 0.09. It's a fairly good update though, considering I've added a file menu of sorts, and a faster blitter.

Not to mention...Framerate indicator as well as frameskip options! Yay!

But wait...drumroll...there's MORE! That framerate indicator will now read 60 FPS on some titles!

********* GP2PSX RUNS SOME GAMES AT 45-60 FPS WITH ONLY 1 to 3 FRAMESKIP******

BUSTER BROS COLLECTION was the first game I tested to run at 50+ (yes PLUS!) frames per second smoothly in gameplay. This is with frameskip at 1 or 3 depending. Not too shabby eh? ;P

I'm testing Final Fantasy Tactics now and there was some graphical issues with the intro screen. Those will be sorted out soon.

Suikoden 1 works now too! I had to slow down the emulator to get compatbility up, and this is one of the newly working games. Otherwise Buster Bros would run at 60 FPS. :/ Also, keep in mind the faster your SD card is, the quicker the ISO buffer will fill, the faster the game will play. I test GP2PSX on a 66X SD card. There's a 150X card I have my eye on.

There's plenty of bugs to be fixed, as compatibility is still low. But it's catching up.

I ask that someone once again starts a compatibility thread for GP2PSX like what was done for the Zodiac version. Hopefully this time we'll see some working playable games pop up! I'm going to go back to the Zodiac version eventually and fix the bug that was slowing down the emu so much and see if it gets the Zodiac a working PSX emu. If so maybe even hydro thunder will work (nerys!).

So to go into more detail:
    1. File Menu - It's a little corny looking but it works. When GP2PSX loads, you will see a file menu to choose your game. It will only load .Z, .ZNX, and .BIN files. There's a small bug in it currently that makes it list the .table files without the .table extension. The .table file is always the second file of that name. Anyways, press the X button to choose your game.
    2. Games run MUCH FASTER due to a bug I've been trying to track down now for ages. It caused the emu to go into a loop doing nothing constantly. This is why the emu went fast but seemed to only show a frame each second.
    3. Better support for games - More games are starting to work, or at least begin to.
    4. Framerate/Frameskip - Use the volume up/down to change the frameskip. Framerate will appear at the top left of the screen as well. Hope this helps. ;P
    5. A faster screen blit / screen stretch - It seems some games I like to play use some of the odder of screen widths the PSX supports, so I kept the stretch function, but made a check to not use it if the screen fits the GP2X, duh.

Btw, I'll see what I can do to get the logo put into the emu. It didn't make it into this build. :/

    Next to come:
    - HLE for faster emulation and no need for a BIOS
    - Better compatibility
    - Faster GPU core.

There's still room for improvement, but I think this release will show you a good game or two to play, fullspeed. So things are looking up for the GP2X.
