Here's the latest outrage. The Sun has reported on a teenager's Xbox 'addiction' - and has put lots of angry capitals in its story so we know it's really bad.

The 17-year-old lad doesn't just have a tinker on Xbox Live every now and then, oh no - he wakes up in the morning and has a "15-HOUR binge" from 9am daily.

We think he sounds like a bloody committed, ambitious fellow. But perhaps his career-mindedness could do with a boost.

The Currant Bun uses the word 'binge' in that inimitable 'TEENAGERS DRINK ALCOHOL AND FALL OVER' way.

Zach - who The Sun makes sure to describe as unemployed because, you know, most kids are well up the career ladder at 17 - manages to multi-task by playing FIFA or CoD on the Xbox and Football Manager on the PC.

The worst bit is "he often doesn't WASH". (The Sun's formatting, not ours).

Reckless use of caps-lock aside, Zach's addiction doesn't sound like it's making for the best of times. He's suffering headaches and blackouts, which doctor's have blamed on the addiction.

Can the parents get involved? Doesn't sound like it. Mum said, "There is nothing I can do to stop him playing".

How about taking away the Xbox Mum?

"Doctors have warned him of the health risks but playing video games is the only thing that makes him happy," she adds.

"I do not want to upset him by taking his consoles away."

Yeah now you put it like that. Sure, the massive blackouts are a problem, but at least he's happy.

Here's the worrying part. Zach says it wasn't always this way:

"It started off slowly," he says. "I only spent two or three hours a day playing. It was just for a bit of fun."

We don't know about you lot, but we play for a few hours for fun. Sometimes more than a few!

Just remember: If you find yourself playing two games at once with an audience of flies, you might want to roll into hospital.

We're so glad The Sun's around to look after us gamers. Did you know, for example, that games cause depression and they also stop young men exercising all by themselves? Evil, evil games.

DISCLAIMER: Other than The Sun's claims, we have no evidence that Zach doesn't wash. (Or, indeed, 'WASH'). So play nice.

Microsoft will once again be hosting the keynote at this year's Tokyo Game Show, with Home and Entertainment head Takashi Sensui and Game Studio vice president Phil Spencer taking the stage on the morning of the show's opening day, September 16.

Currently, the keynote has a working title of "Xbox 360's Vision and 2010's Strategy", although this is subject to confirmation.

As per usual, there will also be a second keynote speech at the event, which has yet to be announced. The last time Microsoft representatives gave the speech was in 2008, when John Schappert gave a talk entitled 'A Canvas for the World'.

Last year's Keynote was delivered by Kaz Hirai, although the biggest announcement it has played host to in recent years was Satoru Iwata's unveiling of the Wiimote in 2005.

id Software co-owner Tim Willits has revealed that the Quake studio's iPhone strategy is in part driven by John Carmack alone, but that the company does intend to use it bulk out the Rage franchise.

"A lot of it's John driving it," Willits told GamesIndustry.biz. "Which is one of the great things about him – only John Carmack could whip out a game in his spare time." Carmack reportedly took just a fortnight to create the 60FPS iPhone demo of Rage demonstrated at QuakeCon earlier this month.

However, while iPhone is not id's core strategy, it does have a full team working on mobile titles.

"We have a digital group at id which we've created - we have dedicated artists, dedicated designers. And what our strategy for Rage and the digital platforms is to not be you can play the iPhone version or Rage, but they can both be additive to the experience. Because the Rage universe is more robust and more fleshed out than any other game that we've created in the past.

"So we can use other platforms to do prequels, or you can play other characters or you may have a whole game that revolves around racing, or a whole game that revolves around Mutant Bash TV. Because the world is so rich, it's like Star Wars. We can imagine a million different Star Wars iPad games – that's what we're trying to do with Rage."

Willits also revealed that the developer's new multi-team structure in the wake of last year's acquisition by Zenimax was easing development on the upcoming (but as yet unseen) Doom 4.

"The reason that the Zenimax/Bethesda/id family thing works is now that we have fully staffed up our Doom 4 group, those guys are working on id Tech 5, they're learned from our mistakes, they're using our methods and because as you develop a new technology in a game, the first the half of what you do always gets tossed out. Because technology changes and you don't know what you're doing at first, so in the past when we were 30 guys it would be ok to spend four or five years making a game.

"But as team sizes have changed and expectations have changed, we could not have followed that paradigm forever. We had to do something. So now that we have the multiple teams, the new technology, we'll get a faster turnaround for id Software."

Despite the new structure, the adoption of iPhone development and a decision to no longer license engines to other studios, Willits felt the venerable developer's goals were unchanged.

"The focus of id is make great games that sell a lot. Licensing was always nice, but nothing ever compares to making a game that sells 10 million copies. That's where our bread and butter is."

Recently I talked to DemonHades, about the current situation of his blog and forum. As we all should know right now, it was hacked several times this month, the SQL DB of the forum was spread online and finally SONY internal LV3 documentation files were linked on the frontpage.

Did DemonHades leak those files because he was mad or did the hacker put the files online to lead the community in a wrong direction against DemonHades, to finally let him shut up?

DemonHades personally told me he had nothing to do with the leak. Neither I see a reason why he should do this. The forum/blog will be back as soon as he fixed his server issues.

So why this attacks, which seem to be a private conflict between someone who wants DemonHades to give up and Demonhades himself?

At the moment DH works together with Team Jungle (known in XBOX scene as drive hackers). The most recent conspicuous event was the PSJailbreak, which seems to be a direct enemy of team Jungle's and DemonHades' BD Drive Research. Maybe members of the PSJailbreak team are behind the attacks? Imagine your own opinion.

Similar fights were and will always be part of the scene. Not everybody can be friends, I guess.

Metatarsal proposed version 0.92 alpha "PacMan E" excellent adaptation of the famous arcade game "Pac -Man"For the Nintendo DS.

I Thought It Would Be a good challenge to create Pacman from scratch with DSGM , with revised graphics for a fresh look. It's a pretty Accurate port with the original gameplay, scoring, score bonus items etc. Recreated as They Were in the original game. This has been " a great project to work on so far and if it continues I Will Receives Enthusiasm to Develop it .

    Attached Is The Alpha version of the game ;
    NB;
-The menu and highscore screenshots are not final

Today sees a massive day in the world of DS Homebrew, the DSI has now been breached for Homebrew in DSI Mode, heres the details from the excellent Wintermute:

It was about this time last year when I released open source save game hacks for two DSi hybrid games, Cooking Coach and Classic Word Games. I kind of expected somebody somewhere to pick these up and make them do something a little bit more useful than change the screen colors but it looks like I was a little optimistic on that front. Most people that have done anything at all seem to have been trying to do as much as possible in the 8KiB or so available in each save game. Interestingly not one single DSi hybrid game I’ve been able to find since appears to have no name entry – bit odd considering how easy it is to test for and correct buffer overflows for this specific situation. If anyone knows any different, please let me know.

Since last year I’ve spent a bit of time hunting around DSi hybrid games and playing around with a few ideas I had about how best to utilise the exploits for homebrew. Mostly I’ve been updating devkitARM & libnds with a few things needed to allow normally compiled homebrew to use the extra 12meg when run in DSi mode. I’m still a little undecided on how best to approach the hybrid model – Nintendo seem to be using a system where extra code is loaded in DSi mode from separate binaries in the .nds container format.

So anyway, lest I ramble on for several pages with background and random thoughts, on to the meat of this post. One of the first things that I did on getting into DSi mode was dump the DS mode firmware. As I expected this was identical to the dump made in DS mode – it contains only the wifi module settings and the user data at the end of a 128K flash chip. Most interesting of all was the large block of unwritten space between the two but unfortunately the first 64KiB is protected but that still leaves 61KiB writable – plenty for my nefarious purposes. After some further testing I confirmed that the wifi module flash chip could be written from DS mode and later read when we use the save game exploits to get into DSi mode. This gave me the motivation I needed to revisit a half finished project I had to upload homebrew to a DS over wifi. As an added bonus the wifi uploader also works with a standard DS, everything you need is in the archive.

Nintendo seem to have pre-empted an approach like this in more recent consoles, both the DSiXL and later model DSi units seem to deny write access to the wifi module chip. Even when using other methods to load code via the save exploits there seems to be no access to the wifi hardware at all – that’s probably dependent on a wifi enabled hybrid game. Whether Nintendo can or will update earlier units with similar security remains to be seen. Currently all early consoles I’ve tried this method with have been able to run code with wifi access regardless of updated firmware or not. I bought a DSiXL a few days ago to confirm this but I have another couple of methods which work on that – they’re not yet in a releasable state but hopefully that won’t be the case for long.

In order to use this method you’ll need three things, a DSi compatible flashcard, one of the two exploited games and a means to write to the eeprom on your chosen game. Eepinator will work if you have a standard DS or there are a couple of devices which allow you to do this from a PC. If you’re one of the many homebrewers who likes to play with mcus then you can probably rig up something with a dev board. I have an arduino and a Fletchtronics Bumble-b sitting at the back of my desk, I might have a play around with those over the next few days and post a howto for those. If you’ve already done something like that then please do get in touch, no point in reinventing the wheel.

One word of warning before we get to the all important download link. Nintendo will probably declare your warranty void due to unauthorised software so proceed at your own risk. This method also won’t allow you to run rom dumps and it’s not something I plan to support at any point in the future. Obviously I can’t control what you do when you have the ability to run code but please consider not releasing anything that’s piracy related or has the potential to enable piracy. I believe homebrew can thrive as long as we distance ourselves from the people who want to get their games for free.

The download is here for those able to try it.

Lets Hope Nintendo leave this alone long enough. ...
