The London Games Festival is now in full swing, bringing an incredible variety of gaming activity to the Capital for just over a month.

With events most days between now and October 28th, planning what to do is a game in itself – but one that just became easier with the official LGF 2012 iOS App, powered by AppyNation.

AppyDay: London Games Festival Celebration – free to download from the App Store now - offers festival goers a one-stop shop to browse events which are taking place during the London Games Festival. Events are organised by week and gives the user information on the event title, date and description as well as the place and time the event is taking place. The app allows new events to be added so the user is always kept up to date with the latest events.

The app also gives the users a free ‘app of the day’ which they can download for free. The app of the day changes every day of the festival so the user always has something new and exciting to discover. The app also features a list of other apps, both paid and free, that are recommended by AppyNation as part of their Games We Like initiative.

“It’s the app that keeps on giving,” says Kirsty Payne, event director, London Games Festival. “This free official guide will not only let users browse the Festival and plan their days – but give them games and apps to enjoy as they travel there.”

The London Games Festival kicked off with the Eurogamer Expo at Earl’s Court, and concludes with the MCM Expo at ExCeL on October 28th, and includes a spectacular free art exhibition at City Hall.

FIFA and Presenting Partners EA SPORTS™ and PlayStation® are pleased to announce that the FIWC 2013 kicks off today, with participants able to take part in this year’s tournament online through PlayStation®Network by registering in the game EA SPORTS FIFA 13 on their PS3™ (more information on how to register can be found on www.fifa.com/fiwc).

For the very first time, the venue for a Grand Final was put to a public vote in order to empower the FIWC community and involve the players in the organisation of this year’s tournament. Madrid emerged as the most popular destination ahead of London and Rome, giving reigning champion Alfonso Ramos the opportunity to defend his title at home.

To coincide with this news, FIFA has released the results of a survey of over 10,000 FIWC players from around the world which show that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the footballer they dream most of playing FIFA 13 against. 25% of those surveyed chose the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, followed by the illustrious pairing of Cristiano Ronaldo (19%) and Wayne Rooney (10%), who occupy second and third place respectively.

Outside of football, FIWC players were more interested in playing against global icons from a variety of backgrounds. The survey found that Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal is the most popular celebrity opponent as he received 13% of the votes, narrowly beating current US President Barack Obama (12%) and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie (9%) to the top spot.

“We are excited to be kicking off the latest edition of the FIWC,” said FIFA’s Head of Strategy and Brand Management, Ralph Straus. “Together with our Presenting Partners, we are eager to continue the incredible growth of this event, building on the 1.3 million players who competed last year. The player vote on the Grand Final venue is a great example of the research we conduct amongst the FIWC community in order to align the strategic development of the tournament with their preferences and expectations. I look forward to welcoming the finalists to Madrid in May.”

The FIWC is the largest online gaming tournament in the world and is an official FIFA tournament offering football fans the chance to indulge in their passion for football and interact with other fans worldwide. With the 2013 season under way, participants can now compete to qualify for this year’s Grand Final, where the winner will receive USD 20,000, an invitation to the FIFA Ballon d’Or to meet the biggest stars of world football and a host of unforgettable experiences.

Platform holder Sony has admitted that consumers have effectively killed off the 3D gaming revolution.
“Consumers decide how relevant it is,” SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. “It's fair to say consumers have decided it's not hugely important at this time.
“It's a capability we've got. It may have a bigger life a little further down the line. It's great we can do it. It doesn't seem to be the most powerful USP at the moment, so you've seen us shift our effort onto fresh new exciting IP. I'm certainly really pleased to see the strength of that as we look into next year. We've seen a resurgence really with the strength of the output from the studio network.”
It’s certainly a stark change of tact for the company having spent years trying to convince consumers that 3D would be the next big thing.
In 2009 chief exec Sir Howard Stringer famously claimed that 3D TVs would be “in every home” by the end of 2010.
The following year the company predicted that 3D would revolutionise gaming, dubbing it as a “significant long-term strategy” with SCEE president Andrew House later predicting that 3D would experience a swifter uptake than HD.
And it’s perhaps no surprise that it’s the need for glasses that has eventually come back to haunt the technology. Indeed, detractors have since the beginning warned that the need for glasses would ultimately prove to be 3D’s downfall.
“Whether you look at movies or games, wearing the glasses and consuming 3D in that way in the home isn't hugely popular,” Gara admitted. “That's just a fact. I haven't read detailed research on it, but the glasses will certainly be a big part of the hassle factor.
“I also think there's a bit of a difference between the highly focused viewing and the more casual viewing. In the home people tune in and tune out a bit, and doing that with glasses on and glancing at your tablet or pausing for a bit, compared to the cinema experience which is a solely focused experience, you know there is a difference emerging there.”

The arrival of the new ‘Super Slim’ PS3 has boosted sales of the console in the UK.
Despite offering no significant price cut, PS3 sales were up 138 per cent last week according to UKIE and GfK Chart-Track data.
The new 500GB machine accounted for 37 per cent of all PS3s sold for the week ending September 28th. And with the new machine releasing last Friday, that means it clocked the numbers in just two days.
A European-only 12GB Flash memory based SKU will be released in the UK on October 12th. It’s retailing for anything between £180 and £200.
