Take a look at BrewPi, a fermentation controller made with a Raspberry Pi. The project hacks control of a refrigerator and a light bulb into the pervue of a Raspberry Pi board. The RPi itself brings network connectivity to the mix. What you end up with is an already highly configurable fermentation system which is perched to receive even more features moving forward.
The man behind the system is [Elco Jacobs]. You may remember his name from the UberFridge project. That was a router-based fermentation controller. This keeps the same great hardware as well as online graphing and control features such as setting plot points for ramping temperature up and down. For now there’s also an Arduino being used which takes care of the hardware switching via json packets received from the RPi. But now that he’s worked out most of the bugs it should be fairly painless to dump the Arduino and build a proper RPi shield for this purpose.

Meanwhile, upcoming strategy title XCOM: Enemy Unknown sits at third with an impressive number of pre-orders ahead of its release on October 11th.

Dixons Retail has unveiled a new trade-in scheme at PC World and Currys stores that will enable consumers to get cashback on old Apple machines when they buy a new Macbook, iMac or Mac Mini.
Interested customers will be able to send off machines that are up to three years old, and in return they'll get up to £350 for an iMac, Macbook Air of Macbook Pro, or £250 for a Macbook.
Non-Apple-ites aren't forgotten, as they can also get £150 cashback for a Windows 7 laptop, or £100 for other laptops.
The cashback comes after customers purchase a new machine, then fill in a form, before sending off the older machine.
While the prices are perhaps lower than what some people would be able to get through a private sale, PC World and Currys will be hoping to grab market from those looking for an easy sale.
It'll be interesting to see how other players in Apple resale market are affected. What do you think?
You can read more on the deal here at PC World.

Suppliers based in China have confirmed that Microsoft has been working on its own Windows Phone handset for the last four months and is ready to unleash the beast early next year.
If true, then the development of the 'Surface Phone', suggests that Microsoft isn't entirely comfortable putting all its eggs in the baskets of others.
New Nokia WinPho devices are due to arrive shortly, alongside Samsung's ATIV S and the HTC 8X and 8S.
What can Microsoft bring to the party that Nokia, Samsung and HTC can't? Who knows, but it surprised everyone with the Surface tablet (reports on which are positive, so far), and goodness knows no-one else is making WinPho sexy.
It's not then a huge leap to imagine a scenario where Microsoft has full vertical integration, like Apple. It's a brave new world, ladies and gentlemen.
Do you think Microsoft can pull off its own smartphone?

The Information Commissioner’s Office is planning to fine two individuals over £250,000 for sending millions of spam texts.
After gathering intelligence for months, the UK data protection and privacy watchdog is ready to use new-found powers to issue its first fine for spam texting.
Details on the two individuals facing the huge fines could not be provided as they still have 28 days to prove they are not guilty. Sources say it is very unlikely that the accused parties will be able to do so.
Another eight companies are also being investigated further and have been warned they may face further action unless they can prove that they are not breaking the law.
The ICO can fine individuals or companies sending spam texts as much as £500,000.
Simon Entwistle, director of operations at the ICO, said: "This is an important step that shows those who blatantly break the law will be in line for a sizeable six figure penalty from the ICO.
“We know that many of the companies making illegal marketing calls and sending spam texts try to operate below the radar, however we have been analysing information from relevant bodies, such as the TPS [Telephone Preference Service], as well as our own complaints figures in order to identify the most complained about companies.

GameCity, the world’s best-loved videogame culture festival powered by Nottingham Trent University today announced Capsule Capsule, an experiential interpretation of Adam Saltsman’s latest videogame, Capsule, as part of GameCity7 from October 20-27th. Capsule Capsule will take place on the Old Market Square from Oct 22nd-27th. For more details, go to www.gamecity.org.

GameCity invites you to Capsule Capsule, an exclusive theatrical presentation of Adam Saltsman’s latest title, tense space exploration adventurer, Capsule, featuring only at GameCity7 on the Old Market Square from 10am-5pm from October 22nd-27th.

The experiential event sees participants undergo special training on Earth before stepping into their spaceship to explore the dark, cold confines of space, battling dwindling oxygen and power levels while searching for answers to a slowly unravelling mystery.

Capsule Capsule is the world’s slowest theme park ride ever...

Capsule creator Adam Saltsman said, “CAPSULE is a PC game about exploration and survival, inspired by Lunar Lander and CAPSULE co-designer Robin Arnott's terrifying audio-only gasmask game Deep Sea, a unique gallery-only game that you really have to play live to ‘get’. For months and months now we've been trying to figure out how to create a live version of CAPSULE, not unlike Deep Sea in some ways, and it is finally happening at GameCity7. We are customizing the game and composing some new sound around the experience, and we are both really excited for this thing to exist.”

GameCity Director Iain Simons said, “Capsule Capsule is the spiritual successor to Fez Dez Rez last year, and it’s part of our commitment to do more than just play new and exciting games you may not have heard of, it’s about experiencing them in entirely unique and surprising ways.”

Saltsman created Capsule as part of the launch of Brandon Boyer’s new site Venus Patrol, which was backed on Kickstarter by nearly 1800 contributors and focuses on the culture of gaming. Other collaborators on Venus Patrol included Keita Takahashi, Pendleton Ward, Vlambeer and Die Gute Fabrik, to name a few.

Capsule Capsule is a theatrical event with sensory deprivation elements taking place in a refrigerated area. Those of a nervous disposition, fear of dark/confined spaces or suffer from astrophobia are recommended to avoid this event.

Capsule Capsule will take place on Nottingham’s Old Market Square as part of GameCity7, which runs from October 20-27th. For more details, go towww.gamecity.org ...

Between 2009 and 2011 we developed, prototyped and brought to market the iControlPad; a unique controller which connected to phones to play games.
Now we want to go one better; a programmable, open-source, Bluetooth, super-compact controller with a keyboard that you can use on almost any tech device.

The iControlPad2 is not tied to phones or tablets. It is designed to be used with anything from your Raspberry Pi, Dev-board or USB Stick computer, to Robots, hobby projects, PC, Mac, bare PCBs/Motherboards, set-top boxes and anything else with Bluetooth.
If you do use it with your phone, it can attach via a swivel-holder for comfort, and is easily stowed when you take calls - as the battery lasts for 12-14 hours it's a great portable controller.
And it's open source. So if it does not do what you want, you add your own commands/protocols, or download ones made by other users.

    Key areas in detail:
Emulation: With the iControlPad2 you can enjoy proper computer emulation on your phone or tablet. Imagine Amiga/C64/PC/ZX Spectrum/Atari/Amstrad all with complete Keyboard, Mouse and Joystick emulation on one small controller; not to mention amazing support for almost any console emulator.
Unrivalled control set: A full QWERTY keyboard, digital D-Pad, 2 analogue nubs, 4 face buttons, Start, Select and 2 shoulder buttons. Everything you need in a compact device - it's the same size as an iPhone4.
No need for App support: The iControlPad2 will work with almost any app, whether it supports it or not. Thanks to new overlay software, you can map the iControlPad2 controls and keys to screen presses in iOS or Android. Just map your favorite app and start playing; you will be amazed at the advantage real controls give you. See the video for a demonstration.

Spread the word to as many sites as you can and help get this project going.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has said Sony has been surprised by the lack of support from third-party developers for Vita.
"One thing that was surprising and disappointing to us was the [lower] number of third parties to come out [in support] after launch," Yoshida told Gamasutra.Yoshida suggests that the emergence of numerous gaming platforms - particularly mobile - has spawned a battle for limited developer resources, which impacted Vita support.
"In retrospect, there are so many options for publishers now that we cannot take it for granted that our new platform would be supported by third parties, like [it would've been] many years ago," he said.
"There are limited resources that third party publishers have, and they have to diversify into new areas constantly; that's a challenge to get the support that we want."
Yoshida says Sony's challenge is define what Vita is and which software works best for it. "As we can expand our install base and articulate what works really well on the platform as compared to others, it will get easier for us to be able get support from third parties," he said.
Sony said recently that it's discouraging developers from porting console games to Vita, as it seeks to 'actively' avoid repeating the mistakes it made with PSP.
