Metal Gear Solid creator sees his peers as 'the last generation' of single visionaries

Metal Gear Solid designer and industry icon Hideo Kojima has predicted that there is little future for auteur developers in the games industry.
Speaking at today's Annual Games Lecture 2012 at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Kojima was asked if he saw himself as an auteur.

"I guess you could say that yes, I could be considered an auteur," offered Kojima, speaking through a translator.
Kojima takes complete control over his titles' gameplay, narrative, control scheme, presentation and just about every element of a Metal Gear Solid Game.
"But that said," he added, "I do think that that particular type of games creation is like indie film making. It is becoming more and more unusual."

Onswipe has released a study revealing that the iPad accounts for nearly all web traffic originating from tablets.
The study found that Apple’s tablet represented 98.1 per cent of 29.5 million unique impressions over 1200 sites from September 13th – 20th 2012.
The iPad stormed into first place with a huge margin between itself and second place winner Samsung Galaxy Tab, which got a mere 1.53 per cent.
Motorola’s Xoom managed only 0.21 per cent of tablet-based traffic, Amazon’s Kindle Fire came fourth with 0.11 per cent and Asus tablets made up only 0.6 per cent of traffic.
Onswipe’s results reveal that iPad users spent 56.9 per cent more time per web surfing session that iPhone owners. iPad’s 54.5 per cent share of total mobile web traffic is more than double the iPhone’s share of 19.05 per cent.
Apple’s iOS owns 75.12 per cent of total mobile content consumption across Onswipe’s monitored network, with Android taking 22.3 per cent and all others having just 2.5 per cent of the market.

Sports Interactive and SEGA, the developer and publisher behind the best-selling Football Manager series, are pleased to announce the release date for this year’s game. Football Manager 2013 will be released across the world on Friday, November 2nd.

And for those fans who can’t wait until then, there’s even better news. Anyone who pre-orders this year’s game through a participating retail partner will be rewarded with something almost priceless… early access to a fully-playable version of the game.

Any fan who pre-orders (or pre-purchases) Football Manager 2013 – either boxed or as a digital download – will receive a unique code giving access to a pre-release, single-player ‘Beta’ version of the game around 14 days prior to the official launch date.

“Our fans are very good at letting us know what they want and the one thing that’s consistently at the top of their wish list is an earlier release date,” says Sports Interactive’s Studio Director Miles Jacobson. “While we can’t, strictly speaking, offer them exactly what they want, this Beta version is the next best thing… a fully playable Football Manager they can get their hands on around two weeks before the finished game hits the streets.”

The Beta version of Football Manager 13 will give access to most of the forthcoming game’s features, including the all-new Football Manager Classic mode and the short-term Challenges (for more information, go towww.footballmanager.com/features).

The Beta version will remain fully functional until Monday, November 5th, after which it will no longer be playable. However, the Beta version’s saved games will be fully compatible with the final release, so none of the player’s progress over the pre-release period will be lost.

Football Manager 2013 will be published by SEGA for Windows PC and Mac on November 2nd 2012. Further information on the game’s new and enhanced features is currently being unveiled in a series of video blogs which can be viewed on the official website, www.footballmanager.com. ...

GameCity, the world’s best loved videogame culture festival powered by Nottingham Trent University, today announced the GameCityNights tour, in partnership with Edge and sponsored by Maxis’ SimCity. The tour will run throughout the year in a number of venues. For more information, or to discuss your venue becoming a future tour destination, contact GameCity’s PR & Marketing Coordinator, Chris White,[email protected]
The monthly after-dark explorations of videogame culture have long been a popular event in Nottingham’s calendar, fusing intimate developer presentations with a relaxed and accessible atmosphere.
But after three seasons and more than 20 events, GameCityNights is going on tour with help from Edge and Maxis’ SimCity. Wild parties, groupies, cars in swimming pools, the GameCityNights tour will have literally none of these things.
In partnership with Edge and sponsored by Maxis’ SimCity, GameCity will bring its imitable style to some of the best venues in the UK (once we’ve had a short rest after GameCity7, of course) and help create and support communities interested in the cultural and creative, all in celebration of the best the videogame industry has to offer.
    Tour stops;
    2012
Nov 13th - National Media Museum, Bradford
Nov 20th - BFI Southbank, London
Nov 21st - Dublin Science Gallery, Dublin
    2013
    Jan 24th - Antenna, Nottingham
    Jan 29th - Arnolfini, Bristol
    Jan 31st - Junction, Cambridge
    Feb 5th - MAC, Birmingham
Feb 22nd - Animated Exeter Festival
    Feb 23rd - Margate, GEEK2013
    Feb 25th - Carriageworks, Leeds
    Feb 26th - FACT, Liverpool
GameCity Director Iain Simons said “After three years of nights' gigs in Nottingham and loads of brilliant guests and audience members, it seemed like a good time to share the love. The one thing we love more than doing GameCityNights events, is driving - so this really is the ideal combination for us. We're really looking forward to making some new friends and trying out some new ideas on them. More than anything else, we'd really like people to get involved - so if you've got something to say or a game to show - get in touch."
Edge publisher, Richard Keith said, “There has always been a close connection between Edge and GameCity so it’s good to be able to bring the two together for what will be a unique series of events celebrating the best in videogame culture.”
Commenting on SimCity’s involvement, Jacqui Ashworth, Maxis Product Manager, added, “We are really excited to go on tour with GameCity and Edge, and hope to meet many future mayors and SimCity fans along the way.”
The details of each event, including headliners and support acts, will be announced at a later date, but as with all GameCityNights events, the tour will feature the GameCity Arcade, free exhibition space for independent developers to get their work in front of crowds for promotion and/or play testing. Titles exhibited at each GameCityNights tour stop will feature in Edge Online. ...

Indie Royale (http://www.indieroyale.com/) debuts its Oktoberfest Bundle filled with six great indie games, which includes point and click title Hector: Badge of Carnage (all 3 episodes) and puzzle platformer Adventures of Shuggy.
The first game in the bundle is about a beer loving and delightfully crass British detective in the Hector: Badge of Carnage Trilogy from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games and co-creator Straandlooper, available for Windows and Mac on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free (includes all 3 episodes). This adult-themed point and click adventure offers brain-teasing puzzles with a twist: the solution often requires getting inside Hector's warped mind.
A grungier version of The Curse of Monkey Island, Hector offers stylized art and a twisted sense of humor. Adventure Gamers says of Hector, it's "just what the doctor ordered, even if that doctor is almost certainly facing a malpractice suit for sending us into such a germ-ridden locale."
Also included is musical puzzle game Chime published by Doublesix Digital Publishing and developed by Zoe Mode, available for Windows on Steam.Chime offers an experience about more than just scoring points - it's about creating something musically beautiful while placing shapes on a geometric grid. This hypnotic game is polished in its presentation and includes fantastic yet mellow songs from luminaries like Philip Glass, Moby, and Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), as well as a special PC exclusive, 'Still Alive' from Valve's Portal. Destructoid calls Chime an "utterly compelling, aesthetically minimalistic puzzle game that rides the cusp of being entirely fantastic."
Another highlight of this bundle is a game that celebrates puzzle platformers with a googly-eyed vampire, Smudged Cat Games' Adventures of Shuggy, available for Windows on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free. A critically acclaimed XBLA title now available on PC, Adventures of Shuggy offers a clever rotation/time-shift mechanic, 36 co-op levels, and over 150 single-player levels. Gamezebo applauds Adventures of Shuggy for its " top-notch presentation and a real attention to detail with things like great music and comic-book-style."
Also included is a critically acclaimed puzzle-adventure game with a twist from Mousechief, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble, available for Windows and Mac on Steam, Desura and DRM-Free. Set in, Brigiton, a fictional small town in the U.S. during the 1920s, one plays a high-school girl who has set out to investigate mysterious crimes by navigating through a game board-like world and engaging in mini battles of social warfare. Offering irreverent dialogue, multiple endings, unique game style, an enthralling story, and at least 15 hours of gameplay, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble is worth checking out. GamesRadar recognizes this game for being "clever, original and genuinely pleasing to play."
The second title from Mousechief is bonus game/visual novel The Witch's Yarn available for Windows and Mac on Desura and DRM-Free. The Witch's Yarn exists in a genre of its own; it's best described as a story-driven interactive drama. GameBoomers calls the genre "Graphical Interactive Fiction," as the player assumes a role similar to that of a director of a play and decides how the scenes will unfold. The game offers a fully interactive story with colorful and playful graphics about a modern-day, middle-aged widow who also happens to be a witch, as she opens a yarn shop and navigates familial challenges.
Last is conceptual retro style shooter from AquaFox The Network, available for Windows on Desura and DRM-Free. It offers classic arena top-down shooting with a twist; the player never directly fires a bullet. Offering immersive play, 20+ levels, a unique art style, and an engrossing story line, DualShockers raves that The Network "succeeds as a complement to surreal films like The Matrix that make you second-guess trusting your computer."
And for those who pay $8 USD or their currency equivalent during the Oktoberfest Bundle will get two music albums from SAVESTATES (Matt Wilson), who is known for creating standout chiptune music. The first album, Calm Your Nerves (http://savestates.bandcamp.com/album/calm-your-nerves), offers 10 tracks that the artist created "for stress; the manufacture, the prevention, and the acceleration thereof." Also included is Chip unDeath(http://savestates.bandcamp.com/album/chip-undeath) based on SAVESTATES' first acclaimed album 'Chip Death' but with 7 reworked tracks and a brand new track.
More information on the Oktoberfest Bundle, including real-time statistics and its current price, can be found on its official website (http://www.indieroyale.com/) or its Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/IndieRoyale) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/indieroyale) pages. ...

So why did Apple decide to ditch the (working) iOS maps app with one based on their own data (despitehaving one more year to the contract)? It turns out to be turn-by-turn voice navigation. It wasn't a feature in the original Apple-Google licensing agreement, so Apple went back to Google to renegotiate what has become a top-tier feature on Android. Apple wanted it. In return, Google wanted increased branding in the maps app (Apple refused) or to integrate Lattitude (Google's FourSquare competitor), to which Apple refused as well. As a result Apple was forced to seek other sources in order to obtain this feature."Eventually, iOS users who don't want to wait for Apple-Google parity will be able to download a native version of Google's maps (rather than a hacked version), but that could be a ways off.

News outlets are reporting that AMD has partnered with BlueStacks to bring Android apps to AppZone Player, something that will apparently allow the more than 500,000 mobile apps to run on your PC. From their announcement: 'What's special about the player on AMD-based products? There are many challenges with running apps that were originally designed for phones or tablets on a PC that in most cases has a larger screen and higher resolution display. To solve this, BlueStacks has designed and optimized the player for AMD Radeon graphics and in particular, our OpenGL drivers found in our APUs and GPUs so you get a great 'big-screen' experience. Additionally, the apps are integrated into AppZone, our online showcase and one-stop-shop for apps accelerated by AMD technology.' Unfortunately this appears to only work on AMD-based PCs (although nowhere does it say that it won't work on Intel CPUs or non-Radeon GPUs). Also no word on how they overcame the difference between a mouse and touchscreen (think pinch to zoom)."

Microsoft forced Ensemble into turning RTS title into Halo game, says studio founder

Developers at Bungie were concerned Halo Wars was ‘whoring out’ its leading franchise, the founder of Ensemble has said.
Speaking to GII, Tony Goodman said the Age of Empires developer had never intended Halo Wars to be part of Microsoft’s leading franchise, but was forced by the console giant into adapting the RTS into the series.

He said that Microsoft was nervous about the risks of creating a completely new IP, and subsequently delayed the development of the game by more than a year whilst changes were made.
“Microsoft was pretty risk averse and they said, 'I don't know if we want to take the risk of creating strategy games on a console, we'd feel better if Halo were attached to it'," said Goodman.
"The difficult part of that was it took the game back about a year in development, and I think it never quite turned out the same. They just said, 'Why don't you just paint over what you have with Halo stuff?' But things aren't quite that simple.”
