Where do old PS2s go to die? Well, apparently they go right underneath your lazy, game-addicted ass now that Britain's pli design is introducing a chair with a seat and back made entirely from recycled PlayStation 2 casings. Suggested retail price for the Reee chair is £99, which is actually MORE than you'll pay for a brand new PS2 these days, even in Britain. ...

Microsoft Game Studios' Shane Kim has attacked the ambitious PlayStation Home service, stating that he doubts Sony can create a top-notch virtual world, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

He went on to claim that Sony's PlayStation Network wasn't in the same league as Xbox Live.

"I doubt [Sony's] ability to implement it and execute it in a really rich and compelling way," Kim told Shack News.

"PlayStation Network is not Xbox Live, it's not even close. To think about layering [Home] on top of that - wow. The hardest part is not even creating the system, it regulating the behaviour and all of that too. That's a massive investment in infrastructure."

Kim also said that Microsoft has no plans to produce a similar virtual world for Live, as it would require too much work for gamers that don't necessarily want it.

"I don't think we need anything like that. I've spent some time with the Linden Lab guys [developer of Second Life]. To try to build Second Life on Xbox Live - or YouTube, Facebook, any of those big social networking services - it's a lot of work," Kim added.

"I actually believe that most gamers will always find more value in what we have on Xbox Live and now Games for Windows Live and how we're building that out. That's what I think is a much better approach, and that's what our approach is going to be."

Ubisoft has revealed details of Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, an Xbox 360 adventure based on the exploits of the popular anime and manga character. The game is being developed exclusively for 360 at Ubsioft's prolific Montreal studio, and is due for release in the autumn.

Although the hyperactive adolescent ninja has appeared in games before, they've mostly been fighters or simple action games. Rise of a Ninja promises an extensive single-player adventure feauring "action adventure gameplay, classic platforming battles, head-to-head fighting and in-depth character development".

The game promises to follow the plot of the anime series closely, from the very beginning up to the 80th episode. Players will experience growing up as Naruto in an around Konoha village, and follow his development from disruptive dropout to respected ninja.

You'll be free to roam around the village and its surroundings, interact with regular Naruto cast members like Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi, and develop your fighting techniques as you see fit. There will also be a multiplayer mode, allowing players to pit their favourite characters from the saga against each other.

Microsoft has released an update for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player on Xbox Live.

It will be automatically applied to your hardware the next time you watch a film in sparkly high-definition while being signed into Live.

The biggest improvements are in the audio department, which now boasts more output choices when using TOSLINK or HDMI connections. You can choose from Digital Stereo (2 channel PCM), Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and WMA Pro. You'll also find a new "Dynamic Range Control" option to fiddle around with.

Networking support has been updated, as has title compatibility, and you should find that performance with MPEG-4 AVC and H.264 files has been tweaked.

Those of you about to buy an Xbox 360 Elite in America will also be pleased that 1080p is now supported via HDMI, while concerned mums and dads can now flex upgraded parental powers (well, controls).

Don't worry if you don't have access to Live to download the update, as it will be available later in the week from Xbox.com.

So, um, how many of you bought the HD DVD add-on?

Demos for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Viva Piñata can now be digi-pinched from Xbox Live.

Those of you eager to relive the adventures of Jack Sparrow, or simply get in Elizabeth Swann's togs, can enjoy a tutorial level from Disney Interactive's upcoming romp. It's based around the events of the second and third films, and is actually supposed to be pretty good - which makes a change from the last two games.

The full banana is due out on 22nd May. And note that this demo isn't available in Asia, Canada, Mexico or the US.

Or, for you green-fingered people that looked the other way when Rare returned to form with last year's Viva Piñata, there's a bite-sized taster to see what you missed.

It really isn't just a child's game, despite the amount of times we've wound Tom up with those words, and it even turned out to be one of our favourite games of 2006. Go and absorb our review if you don't believe me.

This demo's available almost everywhere in the world, and it seems even those without Gold memberships can download it, despite Major Nelson saying otherwise. So get stuck in.

Three more retro rippers are sitting pretty on the US Virtual Console this week, only one of which we don't already have in Europe, Ninja Gaiden.

This NES nugget was the very first console version of the intensely difficult series. You take control of Ryu Hayabashi and travel to America in search of revenge for your father's death, battling your way through 14 side-scrolling missions with your trusty Dragon Sword.

It brought Ryu's acrobatic escapades to public attention and is responsible for some of the finest games ever made.

Also eating cheeseburgers this week is Pac-Man for NES and Ninja Spirit for TurboGrafx-16, both of which are already available in Europe.

NES nibbles will weaken your Wii wallet by 500 Points (GBP 3.50), while TurboGrafx-16 ticklers will toddle your [this is getting silly now - Ed] tuber by 600 Points (GBP 4.20).

The hourglass named in the title of Link's highly-anticipated DS quest will come into play by keeping you alive in a cursed dungeon that constantly drains your health.

According to NEOGAF translations of the latest issue of Famitsu, Link will tackle the caverns of an underwater shrine which is under a curse that slowly drains his health while he's inside.

The only way to survive is to use the Phantom Hourglass, which protects you from the curse for a limited amount of time.

As you progress through the game you will set sail to explore islands marked on your sea chart to find "sands of time" which fill your hourglass and offer you extended protection from the deadly curse.

It sounds like an interesting quest from the usual dungeon-busting of the Zelda series. Phantom Hourglass is expected to hit Japanese stores next month and we'll bring you hands-on impressions.

originally released on Japanese mobile phones, this cute little action-RPG set in the popular FFVII world will finally find its true audience when it's released on PSP, and with luxurious networking abilities. I played it for a few minutes on a friend's phone and didn't understand what was going on, though maybe the mileage will vary on the PSP.

Watch BTV (live TV or recordings) Real Time on PSP!!!

Imagine if you can watch BTV on PSP real time anywhere in the world.

I think I just found a brilliant way to achieve this. Here's the solution

    BTV + LocationFree(LFPK1) + PSP + Streamzap IR receiver + Girder

Sony's LocationFree allows TV or VCR to stream to PSP wirelessly. The problem with streaming BTV is that the LocationFree base did not have any method to control the PC remotely. Specifically, the built-in remote codes for the base do not cover any PC remote controls. Correct me if I'm wrong. (The new versions LFB10 and LFB20 can learn IR codes but I have LFPK1 without learning capability.)

Luckily I use streamzap RC to control my PC and BTV. Of course, LocationFree base is not compatible with streamzap. But I found a clever work around. I found that the streamzap IR receiver blinks whenever I press my universal RC. So it must recognize the signal but does not pass it to the PC. So I did some research.

It turns out the streamzap IR receiver (not the RC) can receive and remap signals from any remote control using Girder 4.0 + streamzap driver 2.9.7 + streamzap plugin. Theoretically, I can use my TIVO RC to control BTV using the IR receiver. I just need to remap TIVO's signals to BTV keys using Girder.

After configuring Girder to accept TIVO RC codes, I can setup the LocationFree base remote control for TIVO. LocationFree may think it's controlling TIVO but in fact, it will be controlling my PC and hence I should be able to watch BTV real time.

Why not get the new locationfree with learning RC? The older version LFPK1 can be bought for $60 on ebay, whereas the newer version LFB10 sells for $200. The older version even has built in cable TV tuner. (Well it's a moot point once BTV works.)

My locationfree unit will arrive next week. I will see whether my theory holds.
