Lawyer Jack Thompson is back with more anti-videogame campaigning, this time calling on Microsoft chairman Bill Gates to prevent the sale of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV in a mass e-mail sent to a number of news outlets.

In the e-mail titled "Bill Gates in the Crosshairs," Thompson vowed that he would "undertake various means to prohibit" the sale of the fourth Rockstar crime-'em-up, asking the Microsoft chairman to "please have your lawyers contact me in order that such sales will be prevented."

The Florida-based lawyer also noted that an Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility report (we've not heard of them either) "makes it abundantly clear that unless such prohibitions are in place, then millions of units of the new Grand Theft Auto game will be sold directly to minors," adding "I am quite intent upon making sure that that does not happen. I and others will endeavor to stop Microsoft from participating in any fashion, directly or indirectly, in such sales to minors."

Could the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV be in trouble then? We wouldn't bet on it. ...

Channel 4 Radio has signed a new deal with wi-fi network operator The Cloud to offer news, music and Celebrity Big Brother updates to PlayStation Portable owners.

From today, users can sign up for a free two month trial which allows them to download 4Radio podcasts via The Cloud's network of 7500 wi-fi hotspots. On connecting to the PSP's Internet browser, users will automatically be directed to the landing page where they can click through to a Cloud/4Radio portal.

Available content will include Morning News, SlashMusic and highlights from the new series of Celebrity Big Brother, which begins tonight.

"Making 4Radio's content available on demand, on the go through The Cloud's WiFi network enables us to target listeners who want bold and mischievous radio programming but don't have time to tune in before they leave the house," commented Nathalie Schwarz, director of Channel 4 Radio.

"For the digitally savvy generation too much radio programming feels tired and formulaic. Becoming the first broadcaster to make radio content available wirelessly on PSPs will help 4Radio connect with a young, mobile audience making our programming easily available whenever and wherever they want."

According to some reports, Channel 4 also plans to make its TV programming available via PSP in the future. A spokesperson for the channel told GamesIndustry.biz that nothing has been confirmed so far, but did add, "This demonstrates our absolute conviction about the need to make our distinctive, high-quality content available to our audience wherever, whenever and on whatever device they want to watch it." ...

Keen-eyed internet surfers may have discovered Peter Moore's next release date-related tattoo, as US retailer Walmart has slapped a US release date of October 1 on Bungie's Halo 3 on its website.

Although most would usually snub the date as little more than retail guess work, the product page has since been taken down, sparking internet speculation that the retailer has indeed let slip the official release date for the sequel.

So a big whoops and bean spill, a Microsoft conspiracy or simply retail error? Microsoft unfortunately wasn't around to give us its official line at the time of writing, but if forced we'd probably put our money on the latter.

When Toyota, a company known for incredibly reliable if somewhat bland cars, comes out with a stylish new concept, it’s a big deal. It’s an even bigger one when company execs hint that the car, if built, would be the successor to the much-missed Supra.

    General Rules:

All systems will take part in one pot!
    Participants keep their full copyright.
Games must not contain any copyright violation (Use of copyrighted characteres, titles, etc.). By entering a title you guarantee to have (obtained) all rights on the used code, media, graphics, etc. We reserve the right to refuse and/or disqualify entries violating copyright. In case you have obtained permissions to use copyrighted stuff, we want to see a proof.
The game must be freely distributeable to everyone - We don't care under what kind of license your are going to release it.
Due to fairness we do NOT allow plain ports. Everyone should have the same base to start an entry. We don't have a problem if you get impressions from other existing games.
Games have to be unreleased and stay unreleased till the final results are out, but can be announced or promoted beforehand.
Submit as many entries as you like. Each entry seperated in one compressed file (.zip prefered)
Judges are allowed to enter, but their entry will not be voted/scored for a prize. Same applies if a judge is indirectly involved in a production (eg. leveldesign, graphics, music, ...)

    Rules for your production:

We do NOT accept Fenix, Python and LUA coded games - use a REAL coding language, thank you!
The entry must be child-proof - No abusive material (racism, pornography, extreme violence...)
You can use the full size resolution of your picked system, but the game has to be on one screen.
The "sprites" must be in one color, preferably black.
The background picture can contain as many colours as you like, but keep the colors realistic in relation with the foreground.
The game must play like those old "Nintendo Game & Watch" or "Q&Q" games. To get a proper impression have a look at this picture:

As start sequence you have to show all "sprite positions" at once (see picture), if you add a logo or anything before such a screen, is your choice (xy presents or similar stuff)
Please don't add funky music to your entry, a LCD game doesn't have real music. We expect beep sounds
    Prizes:

    #1 150 US$
    #2 100 US$
    #3 50 US$

If you submit three games and all three games rank in the TOP 3 you will take all the money.
The prize money is paid per winning title. If a team has worked on an entry, they have to share things themselves.
To claim your prize money there are a few ways: 1) Paypal 2) A bank account in the European Union or 3) Money transfer via Western Union (any transfer fees for that will be cut from your prize money!)

Simon Hall posted some more news of his port of Quake to the DS:

Hi, first up I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a new year!
It's back to work tomorrow for some of us :-(

Anyway I nearly quit QuakeDS a few weeks ago - Christmas eve and my CF card decides to die. I go around town looking for cheap cards but of course there are none... When I finally get a couple of them I get home and my gbamp refuses to boot from them! I coax my old CF card back into working again, only to blow another fuse inside my DS! So basically I'd gone home for the Christmas period with nothing to do but Quake and I'd just bricked my DS. Not cool.

But anyway, once I got back in London it was straight onto eBay to get myself the screwdriver to open the thing, then once it arrived there was a fruitless hunt for solder so I could fix the thing. But I'm back up and running now!

So regarding the game progess, all brush models are now textured (mostly) correctly. Some texture co-ordinates don't line up properly but I'm not gonna bother looking into that for a bit. I also just the other day solved the weird texture problems and palette corruption, so it now looks fantastic :-)

One bi-product of fixing the texture weirdness was that it has forced me to do more transformations in hardware, improving the performance. It has also broken the Alias model rendering - something I'm going to work on next. I then spent today completely pulling apart the poly generation/dispatch to use absolutely no floating-point numbers, removing the software clipping (which is a shame) and putting even more transformations into the hardware. But it's been totally worth it and the frame rate is just dynamite :-D
