Slaanesh has just released a new version of the Mame Emulator for the GP32, heres whats new:

Split module m68000 into three. Now we have m68000.fxe, m68K6502.fxe and m68KZ80.fxe. Games just using 68000 & 6502 CPUs are in m68K6502. ie. Atari games (Gauntlet, Xybots, Vindicators) and some Data East games (Karnov, Chelnov). Games that use 68000 & Z80 CPUs are now in m68KZ80.fxe (new Midway games). Existing 68000 games plus the new Twin Cobra are in the standard m68000.fxe.

    Added Atari game Vindicators.

Added Taito game Twin Cobra and clones. Fully working with sound and at a reasonable speed. Very playable. Patched to make high score loading and saving functional.

Added Irem Tropical Angel. Water-skiing, girl-in-bikini, time-trial racing game. I'd never seen the game before and I really only wanted to add it so that I could add the phrase "girl in bikini" to my webpage.

Added Taito/Toaplan games. Zero Wing, Hellfire, Truxton, Vimana.

Added Midway games. Satan's Hollow, Tron, Kozmic Kroozr, Domino, Two Tigers, Wacko, Tapper, Spy Hunter, Rampage, Destruction Derby, Timber, Max RPM, Sarge, Crater Raider, Powerdrive, Discs of Tron. These are large resolution gammes and all require the Screen Fit set to Skip. Some require Old Core and some require New Core. Discs of Tron needs fire buttons 9 and 10 setup to aim the throwing location of the discs and Kozmik Kroozr the same to rotate the gun (like Heavy Barrel and Midnight Resistance).

Added Marine Boy. Not sure why, was playing River Patrol a bit which is really quite a nice game and saw that Orca also made this one and wanted to give it go. :-)

Complete fix to Exerion (and clones). Added background graphics video handling from 0.37b2 and 0.57. Now works perfectly. Can use either 0.34 or latest romset (for this romset group only). The latest romset fixes some issues with sprite colors. One drawback with the new driver is that it's somewhat slower as two Z80s need to be emulated but it sure is pretty.

Complete fix to Empire Strikes Back. No longer crashes 2 seconds into starting the game. This required fixes to the slapstic emulation.

Fixes and optimizations to Xain d'Sleena, Double Dragon, Contra from GP2X version.

Fixed Gorf to give priority to sound effects rather than samples. You can hear shots and other sound effects now (and the crappy speech!)

Fixes and optimizations to Data East 16-bit Drivers from 0.37b2. Hippodrome and Fighting Fantasy now work perfectly.

Fixes to Roadblaster. Not working on GP32. I'm sure this would work if it had just a little more RAM. Nice candidate for the GP2X.

Optimizations to Hu6280 cpu core. Added some missing opcodes and corrected some bugs.

Experimental Ghosts 'n Goblins using tilemap.c code. * Added Gamma Correction option. Settings are saved on a per game basis. Makes vector games like Asteroids more visible. Had to rearrange some of the options to make room: Old/New Core is merged with Triple buffer.

Added Auto-fire option. Activate in the "Re-assign keys for this game" option. Toggle auto mode for controls Fire 1, 2 or 3 with right shoulder button.

Added complete set of stretch modes for New and Old Core. This is so that the new Midway games work okay as these have resolutions of up to 512x480. Most of them run at good speed with sound.

Added 44100hz sound mode. Works nicely for older games like Pacman and Mr Do, etc. Gives nice high quality sound.

Added options for 66Mhz and 100Mhz underclock modes. Probably not super-useful. Canyon Bomber doesn't need much grunt. :-)

Fixed the samples for Donkey Kong Jr and Space Invaders. New samples are required.

Changed to DevKitARM R19. Thanks to DJWillis for the GP32 EABI SDK libraries!

Flojomojo has posted news and details of a New Colecovision Handheld that also plays Master System and Game Gear games:

It looks like the "new" Coleco is doing right by their brand legacy. Here are my impressions of the new handheld unit, which I just purchased new at Target for $50:

Hardware: The build quality of this device is well above average, definitely better than the VGPocket games, and at least on par with the GP2X. The case is glossy black plastic with a subtle marble/sparkle finish. The whole thing looks nice in person, despite the nasty red COLECO logo. It feels substantial in the hand, but definitely smooth and pocketable. It's larger than the GB Micro, about the size and thickness of a largish cell phone, but very light. It doesn't make any noise when you twist it. There are two speakers on the front of the device, probably dual mono output. The screen is large and bright, with excellent color saturation and contrast. The buttons have a nice springy feel to them. The two buttons above the D-pad on the left are volume + and -, which come in handy since the device doesn't remember your volume setting when you switch it off. The buttons over the A and B action buttons on the right are RESET (to the game select menu) and START. There are no shoulder buttons or volume wheels on the device, just a small slot for a wrist strap. A headphone jack on the bottom of the unit is intelligently placed and doesn't get in the way.

Hackability?: The unit takes 3 AAA batteries and you need a small screwdriver to open the battery compartment. The device is held together by 4 small screws so it looks like it would be easy for Ben Heckendorn and friends to get inside easily. I didn't open mine -- I want to play some games for my fifty bucks, first. There's a jack for an external power adapter (DC 5V), as well as a standard mini-AV jack for audio/video output (included) should you want to play on the big screen. I'm happy with the built-in games for now, but it would be neat to expand this device. It almost feels like there's enough room in the case to do something like that.

Software: I don't know if this is a "SMS-on-a-chip," but it feels like the real thing to me, rather than emulation. Sounds are loud and accurate, and video is displayed in the game's original aspect ratio. Since different video systems are present on the software in this device, some games are upscaled to fill the whole screen, while others are displayed in a window. Text is readable in all modes and motion blur is minimal -- on par with GBA Micro and MUCH better than the original Game Gear. It's nice to have Sonic Triple Trouble on the run in my pocket, and having Snail Maze without a TV-based console. The game selection was done by someone who knows the Sega library, as there are no issues like those you sometimes see with pirate multicarts, such as duplicates, unplayable dogs, or titles that need the lightgun or 3D glasses. These are OLD games, but unlike some of the recent "new" games that were created for plug and play devices, most of these have a measure of professional polish. In other words, I'd rather play great games from the late 80s than crappy games from last week.

Game list: (they're displayed in this order in the software menu)
    Sonic Drift 2
    Sonic Triple Trouble
Alex Kidd in High Tech World
    Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    Altered Beast
    Assault City
    Astro Warrior
    Aztec Adventure
    Bomber Raid
    Columns
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
    Fantasy Zone
    Fantasy Zone: The Maze
    Global Defense
    Kung Fu Kid
    The Ninja
    Penguin Land
    Quartet
    Snail Maze
    Super Columns

Here's a picture of the Coleco handheld next to my GBA Micro for size comparison. Sorry about the inverted picture -- rest assured that the text is the right way round on the real thing.

Microsoft announced late yesterday that the company has shipped 6 million Xbox 360s worldwide since the console's November 2005 launch. CFO Chris Liddell said the company is "confident" in hitting the targeted 10 million shipped units by year's end which is widely believed to be the break even point to start seeing black in its entertainment and devices division.

Note: "Confident" is commonly used by companies when they're not really sure what's going to happen. That uncertainty makes sense in this scenario, however, since the Q4 holiday season will be the Xbox 360's toughest as it competes for consumer dollars against Sony and Nintendo for the first time this generation. Microsoft also appears to have squandered its intended lead by a lack of AAA titles during the 360's first year. So aside from the console's solid performance thus far, is four million shipped units by year's end even likely? ...

How's it go? "There's a sucker born every minute."

According to Mainichi Interactive, in anticipation of hardware shortages, Sony will be selling PlayStation 3 vouchers in Japan this holiday. It's unclear if the "I.O.U." will require a small down payment or the entire ¥49,800. Either way, you're better off grabbing a sticky, writing the note yourself, and slapping it on your kid's forehead. ...

Nyko's Intercooler for the Xbox 360 causes more trouble than it's worth, according to Microsoft representative contacted by Elektriq. The problem is its construction: the Intercooler steals some of the power originating from the supply, decreasing the joules the console actually receives to inadequate levels. One representative even reported that the Intercooler has caused "scorch marks" on the console.

For those who simply must have a cooling accessory, one Microsoft representative suggested the Pelican Fan Stand, whose power comes from a USB input. Microsoft does not make a first-party cooling unit. ...

Call it a bonus, call it a gimmick, but we're bound to see Wii games getting packed with wacky control schemes. First up Metal Slug Anthology, promising five nontraditional schemes in addition to GameCube controller support. We suppose it'll add some replay value, but some of these just look like annoyances:

"Nunchuk Control Stick" - movement and fire controlled with Nunchuk; grenades tossed by flicking Wiimote
"Tilt Wii Remote" - tilts control movement; d-pad "up" to jump (no nunchuk attached)
"Wii Remote" - classic controls; flick to toss grenades (no nunchuk attached)
"Arcade" - hold Wiimote vertical against surface (emulates joystick); nunchuk fires and jumps (flick it for grenades)
"Nunchuk Only" - Nunchuk controls all (except weapon switch and alternate attack) ...

In addition to confirming what we learned this morning, 1UP has revealed that you will be able to "save your own movies from Halo 3's single- and multiplayer gameplay." Now it will be even easier to share your new Warthog-jumping record or Human cannon hilarity with the rest of the world. Will we be able to share our machinima masterpieces over Xbox Live?

1UP also revealed that there will be three different version of Halo 3 (how numerically appropriate): standard, collector's edition, and the "one SKU to rule them all" Legendary edition. Their 3-week love fest with Bungie's latest begins next week. ...

Yongobongo has releaseda new version of his paint app for the PSP, heres whats new:

    yPaint v4 [0.4]a by Yongobongo
This version I have to say has probably been the version with the most debugging out of the lot.

    ~New Features~

File browsing - Went from a Text-Based Opener (type the name, it opens it) to a fully featured File browser for Opening PNG files Thanks to Fuzzie 360's AWESOME LowserLIB. I have modified it to support JPG and TGA loading as well, all credit to Fuzzie!

Multiple Format Saving Menu - Ah, this is also awesome! Press circle and a little menu comes up asking you which format to save the image as. Either TGA, JPG or PNG! Saves it to PSP/PHOTO and it tells you whether the save was successful or not

    Bug Fixes - Self explanatory
