    Wii rules Yahoo Buzz Index

It's pretty evident by now that Nintendo Wii is the hot item this holiday season, even more so than PS3 or certainly Xbox 360.

Sales prove it, talk shows it, and so do the latest rankings in the Yahoo Buzz Index. Nintendo's next-gen console ranked as the number 2 Top Tech Mover, bested only by Microsoft's Zune.

PlayStation 3 came in at #3, #4, and #7. This is due to variations in how people are searching for Sony's console Xbox 360 trailed the pack with the 10th spot.

The full list of movers and shakers in the tech category is as follows:

    1. Zune: +880%
    2. Nintendo Wii: +205%
    3. Playstation 3: +145%
    4. PS3: +133%
    5. Nintendo: +112%
    6. MP3 players: +94%
    7. Play Station 3: +86%
    8. iPod Nano: +71%
    9. Xbox: +54%
    10. Xbox 360: +49% ...

    new release via weltall

this is a new version which completes the work of REV.A and updates the UMF installer.

Among the changes we have the possibility to change brightness with the screen button on the four brightness level (0 -> 25 -> 50 -> 75 -> 100 -> 0 -> ...) also with only the battery and the screenshoot function is available in two versions and changeable from the config menu: the fast version which was builtin in 0.1.6 and the slow but more compatible version which was builtin in 0.1.6 REV.A. At the moment the only games affected by problems with the fast version of the screenshoot function are the two GTA so if you don't use them you can disable the compatibility mode and have a faster screenshoot experience

    this is the complete changelog:
    0.1.6 REV. B for 2.71SE
-now it's possible to use both the screenshoot version (the high speed/less compatible,
and the high compatible/slower version) just by changing the options in the config submenu
NOTE: the high compatible version is default
-now it's possible to change the brightness by using the screen button (what's used normally
    to change brightness) and put the screen at 0% -> 25% -> 50% -> 75% -> 100% brightness
NOTE: this is disabled as default so if you want it you must enable it under the config menu
    0.1.6 REV. A for 2.71SE
-now the screenshoot function can work in two ways (the faster custum mode,
and the more compatible mode from the screenshoot prx from nekokabu)
-for this version the screenshoot function is locked to the compatibility mode
it will be setupable in a next version
-the clock is now changed when exiting cwcheat menu (it should fix games like burnout
locking up cwcheat when changing clock sometimes)
-changed the installer with the coldbird one

    news via murcury news

Microsoft said it has sold more than 1 million copies of "Gears of War" in its first two weeks. We'll see if it has prompted sales of new Xbox 360s as well. In other news, Microsoft has stores stocked with its new HD-DVD movie player. I have one in the garage, but for some reason it stopped working. Microsoft also has its Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel and Xbox Live Vision Camera accessories on the market as well.

Microsoft still says it expects 10 million consoles to be sold by the end of the holidays. That means it will have shipped that many units from its factories to its distributors. Lastly, Microsoft is now allowing movie and TV show downloads on Xbox Live. You pay for the shows in points, but HDTV shows sell for the equivalent of $3, while standard TV shows are $2. HD new release movies are $6, and standard new release movies are $4. There's a rumor that the company will offer a larger hard-disk drive soon, but the company hasn't confirmed that yet. ...

    news via kotaku

As I predicted way back when Nintendo first announced the sensor bar for the WIi, people who front projection systems are sorta screwed. Actually, they are totally screwed unless their projector is mounted within a dozen feet or so of the surface they are projecting on.

One gamer, whose distance between projector and wall is 30-feet, decided to hack apart that super thin sensor wire and make his own extra-long connection.

Stuck without a way to make the console work as I needed a 30' sensor bar connection and not seeing anyone else take the plunge yet, I snipped my sensor bar wire in order to splice in an extension.

The wire is 2 conductor stranded and very thin. There's white fabric shielding around the wires and a couple strands of white shielding wrapped up with the wires. The 2 conductor wires are twisted. So, I stripped the lines back and separated to the two wires. Again, they are very fine, thin strands. One is red and one is orange.

I cut a short segment of 24 gauge, 2 conductor wire I bought at Radio Shack, and proceeded to solder it in for testing. I figured no sense using a huge wire length just to verify if this works. The sensor bar wire doesn't take to solder too well. It was resistant to sticking. Finally, though, I got the solder to stick and went to test.

Long story short, he redid the solder three times before it worked, which may have been because of a bad solder or because the hacker forgot to recycle his Wii during the testing phase. ...

I know we've reported about this before, but it doesn't quite hit home until it happens to you.

This morning a gaggle of children had set up residence in my lounge to play some Wii. About ten minutes into Wii Sports play I heard a distressingly loud thump followed by even more frightening silence.

Chugging downstairs I found a circle of children staring at me with wide eyes and open mouths. On the floor lay a Wii remote, on one of the child's wrists a broken Wii strap.

They were, they tell me, playing baseball. Fortunately, the airborne remote slapped into a wall and not my $3,000 plasma screen.

For now, I am no longer letting the kids play Wii. If I have to decide between a happy half-dozen children and a working Plasma the TV wins every time.

Until Nintendo gets around to fixing the exceedingly flimsy piece of string holding the strap to the Wii, I'm not going to be letting anyone play Wii Sports anywhere near my TV.

I'm hoping someone, anyone, steps up and comes out with a much sturdier, perhaps metal, cord for the strap.
