Microsoft has announced that it expects sales of the Xbox 360 worldwide to pass that of the original Xbox - around 25 million units - by the end of November.

However, according to Mindy Mount, corporate VP and CFO of the company's Entertainment and Devices division, this is "still only a start," with the Xbox 360 a "big driver" of growth in the interactive entertainment business.

"So far we've done a great job appealing to the core gamers," she said at the BMO Market Capitals conference in New York, "And by the end of this month we expect our global installed base to reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox.

"It's a great milestone for us, but still only a start when you consider that history shows three-quarters of a console's sales come at a price of USD 199 or lower. We hit that sweet spot in September, making our Arcade model USD 50 cheaper than the Wii and half the price of a PlayStation 3.

She also revealed that the console's price cut had resulted in a huge impact on sales worldwide: "In the US in September our console sales rose 42 per cent month over month, and in Europe they rose 62 per cent," she said. "In Japan we've had over a 500 per cent increase in sales."

Mount also discussed the economic situation, and echoed many others in her belief that while the videogames industry wasn't "recession-proof" it would hold up well.

"Certainly consumers are pulling in their purse strings a little bit, and you can't help when you read the newspapers or listen to the news but hear about companies taking down their forecasts and reducing their headcount," she said. "But we think that the whole entertainment industry, the interactive entertainment business, is poised to weather the storm a lot better than other businesses.

"If you take a look at history and the last recession we had in the US in 2001, the interactive business grew about 43 per cent that year. It's not to suggest that videogames are recession-proof, but what I think we are saying is a couple of things.

"One of them is that even in hard times people want entertainment more than ever before, and videogames offer great value for the money. But also a lot of what the interactive entertainment business is driven by is the cycle of platforms, where you are with the platform, where you are with price points and the titles that are out in the market today.

"Just a month ago NPD said it expects the sales of videogames hardware, software and accessories to rise 23 per cent in 2008 to USD 22 billion, and certainly Xbox is a big driver of that growth thanks to a combination of our new, lower price points, our blockbuster Holiday line-up and industry-leading online service Xbox Live."

360 hasn't been doing too badly in Japan lately, having recently outsold PS3 for six weeks running. And The Last Remnant could be the game to give the platform that extra kick it needs in the Far East.

The Square Enix RPG has score a massive 38/40 in Famitsu magazine scoring 10, 10, 9 and 9 from its four reviewers (via NeoGAF).

Full translations of the review are yet to filter through, but from that score we're guessing they like it. And Square expects our western brains to like it too.

"Our goal with The Last Remnant was always to make a game that would be welcomed by a global audience," said producer Nobuyuki Ueda recently.

"Our fans across Europe have been very supportive towards us, and we wanted to give them the opportunity to play the game at the same time as fans in Japan. We hope they'll enjoy playing The Last Remnant as much as we have enjoyed making it," he added.

The game's due out worldwide on 360 on November 20. ...

Square Enix at long last offered a look today at the special hardware bundle it has planned for the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Dissidia. We'd suggest shielding your eyes if you don't have the ability to import.

The Dissidia hardware bundle combines a boxed (and probably shrink-wrapped) copy of Dissidia with a specially designed PSP-3000. All this comes in a box that resembles the Crisis Core PSP-2000 bundle box, only with a white and black design.

At the center of the package is the PSP-3000 unit. Based off the Pearl White version of the hardware, the special Dissidia unit includes artwork for the game on the front and back.

Even the packaging for the game is getting special treatment through a cover featuring artwork from Yoshitaka Amano. Buyers of the regular version will get a different cover.

The Dissidia bundle will be available in Japan on December 18, simultaneous with the game's standard version. Pricing for the bundle is set at 25,890 yen, making it the exact same price as when buying a standard PSP-3000 system and a standard copy of the game.

Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has hinted that a playable demo of Capcom's upcoming survival horror game will be announced soon.

"We'll be making an announcement about that relatively soon," he told Eurogamer, in comments relayed by this morning's Resident Evil 5 hands-on preview. Downloadable content is also "possible", he said.

One thing we might not be seeing, however, is a mandatory hard-disk install for Resi 5. Capcom took a bit of a hammering for the duration and size of the Devil May Cry 4 installation, and it sounds as though the publisher paid attention to feedback.

"We're still working on those technical elements in the last couple of months, but we can tell you that if users are dissatisfied with that kind of thing, then it's certainly something we keep in mind when we develop," he said. "We'll do our best to come up with something that users will not criticise, but love..."

A new piece of Halo 3 Recon artwork has emerged in the form of US mag Game Informer's forthcoming cover, which hits the shops next week.

The mag promises "10 pages packed full of info and screenshots straight from Bungie," and hopefully - unlike Halo 3 - it won't just be a load of multiplayer stuff to tease us even more than we already have.

Bungie has previously referred to the standalone expansion as its "Frozen Throne" (in reference to Blizzard's content-packed Warcraft III expansion) and said it's "not viewing this as a full game."

A single-player campaign following the antics of a hard-nut Orbital Drop Shock Trooper as well as new maps and multiplayer content are promised.

Look out for the details hitting the internet soon then.

Nintendo has legally protected the names for tons of DS software ideas, including some specifically aimed at the brand new DSi model.

These are DSiChannel, DSiStation, DSiNews, DSiMovie, DSiMusic, DSiMail, DSiMode, DSiVision and DSiTsuushin (DSiCommunication), according to the Japanese trademark database read by Siliconera.

Unfortunately DSi-specific software will be the first handheld content by Nintendo to be region-locked. The platform holder told us this was due to regional net services and age-rating concerns.

This isn't the case with the DS catalogue of lightbulb-ideas, however, of which many appear to be emulating the PSP catalogue of multi-function uses.

We like the sound of DSBook - this may be a fancy eReader - as well as DSMap, DSPhone, DSDiary, DSTrainer and DSSpeak. We have trouble with the latter.

Fresh details on Nintendo's forthcoming 'Play It On Wii' range of GameCube re-issues have emerged, revealing that more effort is being invested than may have previously been thought.

A report in the latest issue of Famitsu (translated by IGN) reveals that Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has been tweaked in key areas.

For starters, rather than using the ludicrous Bongo peripheral, the game now controls like a traditional platformer - with movement of Donkey Kong assigned to the nunchuk analogue stick, and jumping mapped to the A button.

Motion controls will also play a part in the punch and jump mechanics, while Nintendo has also taken the opportunity to tweak minor elements such as enemy positioning and mid-level checkpoints.

The re-issue of Pikmin, meanwhile, appears to be a more straightforward motion control update. As expected, you'll be able to control your alien army by pointing the Wii remote, holding down A to pick them up and throw them around, or B to shout out to them.

Release dates were also touched upon in the Famitsu article, with Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat arriving first on 11th December and Pikmin coming on the 25th.

No dates have been confirmed for the rest of the world as yet, but our spies suggest that February/March is a safe bet. More news on pricing and dates when we get them. How much would you pay, Eurogamer reader? ...
