For the last few weeks we’ve been helping drk||Raziel test and debug his nulldc emulator. We’re now pleased to exclusively bring you a video of it in action! Progress has been steady since his last update, showcasing the BIOS running. Games are now running and all of the graphical glitches are now gone from the BIOS! This is still a very early build of this emulator, and it will be a few more weeks before this really gets to playable form. It is currently running very slowly, (7.5 frames per second), but drk||Raziel has not even touched speed optimization yet. Also, many games have graphical glitches, sound is not ported yet, and most games don’t boot at all (mainly because they gripe about not having sound). However, progress is moving extremely quick on this project and it is shaping up very nicely! Below is a video of the emulator running Power Stone and Crazy Taxi.

Please note video has been cut in a few spots, mainly when it is loading (it took a minute) the emulator at the beginning, and when it cuts to Crazy Taxi.

** WARNING **: DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU PLAN ON USING ANY JAILBREAK DEVICES FOR HOMEBREW PURPOSES. UPDATING TO 3.42 OR ABOVE WILL BLOCK THE USE OF ENABLING/INSTALLING HOMEBREW APPLICATIONS.

Sony's Network Operations Americas VP Eric Lempel has announced that PS3 Firmware 3.50 has released, which now adds support for Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback as well as Facebook integration and ability to report any inappropriate messages to Sony from the XMB.
Hi everyone, as we announced previously, the PS3 system software update (v3.50) is adding support for Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback, and it will be released shortly.

Additional new features in the 3.50 update include:
    • Facebook Integration: Developers will be able to create PS3 games that have more interaction with Facebook. Once compatible PS3 titles are available, PS3 users can choose to access public information on Facebook – including user name, profile, uploaded photos and friends list – to enhance their gameplay experience.
    • Grief Reporting Function: Users can send claim reports directly from the XMB for any inappropriate messages they receive from other PlayStation Network users. This feature is accessible from the option menu of the messages list in the FRIENDS category.

For more details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 system, please visit http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Features/SystemUpdate.

If you want the 3D Playback and don't care for homebrew, you can download from the link below:

IRC member c4pt from PS3HAX has just managed to get the Other OS installer working on his Jailbroken PS3. He is making fast progress in enabling Other OS on our Jailbroken 3.41 PS3's...something that Sony has taken away. But as for now it wont load anything. When you try to run the installer you get this error. Below is an image of what is shown.

So far, he can launch it and loaded but now needs to find a way of re-enabling the hidden menu option for the Other OS!

Ever since the release of PS Jailbreak clones such as PSGroove, there has been a steady flow of homebrew, advances bringing back features and opening up new ones. Kudos to all developers!

I got my Teensy++ Thursday and decided to port SNES9x (Super Nintendo Emulator) over to the PS3 as a little exercise to play with the Cell SDK.

It's pretty rough but it seems to work OK. It will load (uncompressed) ROMs off of /dev_usb000.

If anyone is interested, the code is linked above via GitHub with a binary attached below.

It's a new port to PS3 LV2 OS based on the vanilla SNES9x source.

    To build:
    • Install Cell SDK >= 1.92. You know how to find it. Configure according to the install instructions (make sure to set CELL_SDK).
    • Make pkg
    • Load the pkg and your ROMs onto a usb drive.
    • Install on PS3 using your jailbreak device of choice.

    Things that suck:
    • Lots of SNES9x features are not supported yet. No save states, for example. Most of these are really simple to implement.
    • Sound code is rubbish. It more or less works, but you'll probably hear the occasional skip.
    • Performance isn't great.
    • UI. Or rather, there isn't one.
    • So much more.

lachrymose has released a simple homebrew game known as PS3Pong.
I give you the first Homebrew game for native GameOS. I coded it in about 12 hours. It’s not very good and I ran into some problems. Fixed soon!
    • Controls: Up / down – Move
    • Cross – Pause (not working)
    • Bugs: Must do a hard reset on exit. Probably an easy fix.
    • Next Release: 2 player!
Its better than nothing right? Not to mention, this is definitely the right direction. Hopefully we'll see more homebrew apps and games released.

What this payload does is makes use of the /app_home/PS3_GAME menu on the XMB. You can place an application on a USB drive under the PS3_GAME folder and run it without installing a package. However, extracting a .pkg file onto a USB drive is not sufficient to run the program. You will need to modify the EBOOT.BIN in order for it to work properly. Once homebrew files start to roll out, we may not need to install them but can simply run them from the USB drive themselves.

    PSGroove
This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers.

AerialX's fork of PSGroove was made for easier prototyping of the initial payload.

    It should work on:
    • AT90USB162
    • AT90USB646
    • AT90USB647
    • AT90USB1286
    • AT90USB1287
    • ATMEGA32U4

    ... and maybe more.

This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.

    Payloads
This fork comes with multiple payloads, which you can enable by editing port1_config_descriptor.S. All payloads have been rearranged so that they do not use hardcoded addresses anymore; you can rewrite and resize functions without worrying about offsetting others.

    Default Payload
The default payload performs the basic PSGroove exploit; it allows you to install and run unsigned packages.

    Apploader Payload
This payload makes use of the /app_home/PS3_GAME menu item. You may place an application on a USB drive under the PS3_GAME folder to run it without installing a package. Note that simply extracting a .pkg onto the USB drive is not quite enough for a program to run. EBOOT.BIN must be slightly modified to boot properly.

    Using
    • To use this exploit:
    • Hard power cycle your PS3 (using the switch in back, or unplug it)
    • Plug the dongle into your PS3.
    • Press the PS3 power button, followed quickly by the eject button.

After a few seconds, the first LED on your dongle should light up. After about 5 seconds, the second LED will light up (or the LED will just go off, if you only have one). This means the exploit worked! You can see the new "Install Package Files" menu option in the game menu.
