One of the key figures in the recent history of PlayStation has distanced himself from the business.
Kaz Hirai has resigned his position of chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment. His role as Sony Corporation president remains unaffected.
He will retain the role of part-time board member of SCE, meaning that a small link remains between the pair.
Hirai played a key role in stabilising Sony’s games business after the departure of “the father of PlayStation” Ken Kuturagi in April 2007.

The latest PS3 firmware update is coming out tomorrow.PS3 System Software Update 4.20 will include a handful of new tweaks to increase the system's usability, Sony has announced on the EU PlayStation Blog.First and foremost, you'll now be able to select multiple saved data items at once, so you can move or delete info en masse rather than have to painstakingly shift them over one at a time.Less thrillingly, the power-save mode has been altered so the system will automatically turn off after an hour of no use by default, as per SCEE regulations. These settings can be altered via the System Auto-Off section under Settings in the dashboard. The audio for Sony's official wireless stereo headset has been tweaked as well. The last system update enabled players to hear their own voice through the headset in a feature called Sidetone. The new firmware will make the feedback adjustable by letting players select one of five volumes for their microphone, or turn this feature off altogether.Virtual surround sound will also be enabled for those using the wireless stereo headset to watch movies on Blu-ray or DVD.More details will be revealed on the US PlayStation Blog once the update goes live tomorrow.

Two British teenagers have admitted they participated in DDoS attacks on Sony and others
Two members of "hacktivist" group LulzSec have pleaded guilty to hacking Sony and other companies with DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. Ryan Cleary, 20, and Jake Davis, 19, both admitted to the Southwark Crown Court that they took part in the attacks on Sony, Nintendo, 20th Century Fox, NHS and others. Cleary pleaded guilty to six of eight charges filed by London prosecutors at a hearing today, while Davis pleaded guilty to two of four charges.
Cleary, who is already jailed in the UK was indicted earlier this month by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles. His attorney has said she would "fiercely contest" any moves to extradite her client to America.
"Cleary is a skilled hacker. He controlled his own botnet, employed sophisticated methods and his broad geographic scope affected a large number of businesses and individuals," FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told Reuters in mid-June.
Ryan Ackroyd and another 17-year-old man whose identity is being concealed for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to four charges. They both denied attacking websites from Sony, Eve Online, Nintendo, News Corp.'s British unit and others. They also denied stealing and posting confidential information obtained by the hacking efforts.

Sony has been caught unawares by a legal change in South Korea, which prevents under-18s from being asked for their names or ages for the purpose of account authentication. No sooner had the company announced a half-price sale at its PS Store and then it was forced to pull the whole thing down in order re-work the interface and make it compliant. It's expecting to reopen it sometime "this year," but in the meantime the Store is strangely still accessible to PSP and Vita users of any age, while multiplayer and other PSN functions will continue to run on PS3. There must be a lawyer somewhere for whom this all makes complete sense, and hopefully they work for Facebook.

Update: Sony has responded, stating that the report from a moderator on the European PlayStation Forums is incorrect. "SCEA can confirm that PSN maintenance is not happening this week. We'll keep you updated on all official PSN maintenance announcements on PlayStation.Blog."
The Sony representative notes that all official PSN maintenance announcements will always go through the PlayStation Blog and never through its forums or other avenues.
    The original report is below...

An interesting tidbit can be found on the European PlayStation Forums concerning PlayStation Network maintenance that’s scheduled to occur on Wednesday, June 20th. Another post about it can be found here.
The information was posted by user SuperFastZombie, marked as a “Community Team Moderator.” The time of the maintenance is marked as 16:00-20:30 BST (British Summer Time). For American users, that equates to 11am-3:30pm ET / 8am-11:30am PT.
The forum post notes that “for the duration of the maintenance some users will be unable to log into the PlayStation Network, Account Management and the PS Store. PS Home will also be unavailable. There may be some additional downtime after the maintenance period for testing purposes.”
Because of the rather strange way this maintenance is being announced, we’ve reached out to Sony for confirmation (including on if this will only affect European PlayStation gamers) and will update when we hear back.

Andrew House felt he was heading into the lion’s den ahead of his first major press conference since becoming CEO of PlayStation.
SCEA president Jack Tretton had lapped up the whopping and adulation as he introduced violent action games to the bloodthirsty crowd. House’s job was to show the same audience an interactive book service. For kids.
“I think I had Jack behind me going: ‘Ok mate, you can go on stage for this one,’” laughs House.
“We were joking backstage and I said: ‘You do realise that we have forged a division of responsibility at E3. You are in charge of blood and mayhem, and I am family-friendly.’”
Not that House minds this role. He is a family man, after all. When MCV asks about his first nine months in the job, he tells us how great it’s been for his kids. “My son has loved the adjustment to Japan,” he says.
But House is not just about the family in the home, the Welshman is all about cultivating relationships at work, too.
On the surface PlayStation’s E3 press conference was what you’d expect. A new Move game, a few Vita projects, some ambitious new IP coupled with established brands. The only thing missing was 3D – another sign perhaps that the technology is on the wane.
Yet beneath the surface, and this year’s press conference was all about partnerships. House has built a strong reputation for forging relationships. In his career at Sony he helped bring GTA to PlayStation, he asked Mubi to bring its catalogue of indie films to European PS3s, and he was even instrumental in Sony’s lucrative deal with J.K Rowling for Harry Potter website Pottermore.
And building better relations with third parties is exactly what House has been doing in the nine months since we last spoke. Wonderbook is yet another partnership with Rowling, Ubisoft is developing exclusive PS3 and Vita content, HTC has teamed-up with PlayStation Mobile, and 2K has even let Sony use its ‘Big Daddy’ character in PlayStation All-Stars.
“When I took on the role one of the things that I wanted to do was leverage my experience of running third-party relations and to build a global framework about the way we work with publishers,” he explains.
“I put together a global meeting to hammer out issues and define them. It was different because we were putting people together to deal with issues in a really active way. But it was also married with the fact that most of us have great longevity with the company and know each other well. There was a great sense of team spirit with no real hierarchy in the room. That was a great moment for me. I thought: ‘Yeah, this is going to be fun and interesting.’”

Sony UK has been overwhelmed by the retail feedback to Wonderbook.
Amazon told MCV that the interactive book service – which will launch with Harry Potter spin-off Book of Spells – is ‘terrific’.
SCE UK’s boss Fergal Gara said that Wonderbook is the big PS3 launch of Christmas, and will arrive with multiple SKUs designed for current PS Move owners, those who have yet to buy Move, plus those who don’t own a PS3.
“[Wonderbook] is the biggest one we’re going after this Christmas,” Gara said.
“There’s still a lot to do and a lot of communicating to consumers still to do. We will need to work with retail where appropriate.
“If consumers understand what we are offering them, then it should fly. It is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The feedback we have had this week is that this is special, this is unique, this is pushing boundaries. That is what you want to be doing in a sector like this.”
Amazon’s head of buying for games, Graham Chambers said: “I thought [Wonderbook] was terrific, very innovative and good to see the PS3 offering something new this far into the lifecycle. I’m sure the Wonderbook will have huge appeal to parents and young children.”
Gara added that Wonderbook could work in a wide range of retailers – perhaps even the likes of Waterstones and WH Smith.
He said: “Specialists see a key role for them in it, especially with their power to demonstrate, but also it is going to appeal to parents, so you would expect the likes of Argos and the supermarkets to do well with it. And the hybrid between books and games means that it fits with Amazon’s strengths. Maybe it would be appropriate to take into traditional book retailers.”
Wonderbook will launch this Christmas along with Book of Spells, and has been supported by Harry Potter author J.K Rowling.
