Total U.S. console software sales for July were $386 million, according to NPD stats released this morning, up 22% compared to last year and much higher than even the most optimistic estimates.
Current generation software sales declined $45.5 million. Next generation software sales increased by $116 million. High points included DS software sales which have held up well in the aftermath of DS Lite's introduction.

Overall unit sales were up 22%, while ASPs, bouyed by Xbox 360 games, remained steady.

Year-to-date software sales are up 2% compared to last year, way up on most expectations which anticipated the market down. Wedbush Morgan Securities posted, "We intend to reassess our full year forecast with a bias for upward revision."

The analyst added, "We think that there will be a positive market reaction to the robust July sales growth. We are pleasantly surprised that software sales through the summer months have been so strong, and now believe that the decline in current generation software will be largely offset by next generation software sales for the next several months. Once the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii are launched, we expect next generation software sales to surpass current generation software sales." ...

The port of the Snes emulator Zsnes to the Xbox has had an update, heres whats new:

    * ZsnexBox now comes with two excellent (Zelda and Metroid) skins to choose from by Neverwill. Be sure to try them both.
    * Added an animation to the Metroid skin
    * Skin switching supported. Up to 15 skins are supported. Add additional skins to the skins folder. In each folder put a copy of the ZsnexBox.ini that has the correct text/image placement in this folder. It must be named the same as the folder name. For example, the Metroid skin is in the D:skinsMetroid folder and contains a Metroid.ini
    * Added more text placement options. Virtually all the text can be adjusted.
    * Changed the main menu, controller, and emulator options text to be centered.
    * Added a Help/FAQ Menu option. This screen contains information about the use of ZsnexBox as well as an updated FAQ. Please look here "before" posting a question on the forums.
    * Added option to adjust the clipping window for the Help text.
    * Added a new Help background image for the Help screen
    * Tweaked the timing and animation code. The animations now run much smoother.
    * Fixed the HD corrupt graphics problem some users were getting. ZsnexBox should display correctly in 720p and 1080i for all Xbox versions (regardless of the dashboard used to launch it)
    * Fixed Player 3 and 4 controls
    * Added the ability to change the Rombrowser text clipping. The width can now be increased or decreased.
    * Created a new menu called GUI Options and moved the Text and Image Options to this menu.
    * Added a GUI transition between screens. The fade effect duration can be adjusted
    * Added support for a zooming logo/graphic for the rombrowser.
    * Fixed a bug where some text was too far to the right in HD modes.
    * Fixed the invisible digit bug on the cheat menu in HD modes.
    * Changed all GUI images to PNG format. JPG's are no longer supported anywhere. This alone frees up around 4MB of RAM and as a result, all of the previous HQ previews work again. The GUI looks even better as well.
    * Changed the "Show ROM Info" option to be off by default.
    * Fixed a bug where the Option screen would be dimmed if screen resizing was done outside of the emulation.
    * Fixed a bug where the preview border values were not being saved correctly.
    * Added a confirmation screen for exiting ZsnexBox.
    * Added options to change the zooming logo animations on the main menu and rombrowser. The values that can be changed are minimum size, maximum size, and speed of animation.
    * Decreased the amount of time before the rombrowser animation repeats.
    * Added option to change the distance the rombrowser animated character moves (if it moves at all). The default value is 100. So a value of 50 would cause it to repeat in half the time.

Nintendo's Wii, although not strictly a next-generation gaming machine, is piecing together the one of the most impressive launches of any console in history, with the sum total of 27 (to date) titles being readied for the machine's launch.

Nintendo, under the guidance of president Satoru Iwata, can also shed the stigma of being unable to attract decent third-party support, with a massive 23 of the titles coming from its publishing partners, partners desperate to reach a mass-market with minimal research and development risks.

    The list to date reads:

Avatar: The Last Airbender - THQ
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII - Ubisoft
    Blitz: The League - Midway
Call of Duty 3 - Activision
    Cars - THQ
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - Atari
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors - Square Enix
    Elebits - Konami
    ExciteTruck - Nintendo
    Far Cry - Ubisoft
    GT Pro Series - Ubisoft
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers - Square Enix
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Nintendo
    Madden NFL 07 - EA
    Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - Activision
    Metal Slug Anthology - SNK
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Nintendo
Monster 4×4 World Circuit - Ubisoft
Need for Speed: Carbon - EA
    Open Season - Ubisoft
    Rayman Raving Rabbids - Ubisoft
    Red Steel - Ubisoft
SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab - THQ
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - Sega
Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam - Activision
Trauma Center: Second Opinion - Atlus
    Wii Sports - Nintendo

It is expected that this roster will expand to 35 before the Wii hits the streets, with the potential for hundreds of product launches during the first year the Wii goes on sale. SPOnG very much hopes Nintendo quality assurance procedures, often a cause for some serious head-clashing with third-parties in the past, will weed out any titles seeking a quick cash-in on the technology afforded by the new home platform. ...

The current battle—war, if you will—between Blu-ray and HD-DVD will end in an inglorious stalemate according to research conducted by Screen Digest, a business-related media research and analysis firm. Moreover, the research firm also predicts that the war will do more harm than good and actually harm the high definition disc market, which kind of goes against the whole "competition will set you free" thesis, at least in this case.

Just under one-fourth of DVD sales by 2010 will be high definition discs the research also concluded. Interestingly enough, Amazon higher-ups told a group yesterday, myself included, that they don't necessarily care who wins the high definition DVD wars and neither do its customers; the more affluent, technologically savvy Amazon buyers will plop down money for their favorite right now, and should their horse lose the rase, they'll simply switch allegiances. I take it not many of you share the same sentiments. ...

Gamers will have forgotten all about the lack of rumble in console pads by next year, reckons Matt Southern, producer of PlayStation 3 racer MotorStorm.

"By 2007 we'll say 'no rumble? What of it?'" Southern told Official PlayStation 2 Magazine. He believes "the many positives of PS3 far outweigh the lack of rumble".

Sony took the decision to remove the rumble feature, which was included with previous PlayStation controllers, as it said the vibration would interfere with the pad's new tilt-sensing technology.

Southern's game MotorStorm, is an off-road racer in which the different terrain has an affect on the vehicles' handling and so is the type of game that might have made heavy use of a rumble function. But Southern is still certain that gamers won't miss it: "We're sure that with the huge amount of particles we can throw around on PS3 you'll know exactly what surface type you are on." ...

Somewhat plausible rumours are circulating that, in Japan, Capcom's eagerly anticipated Resident Evil 5 will get a PlayStation 3-only release.

Which would make sense, given the spectacularly poor sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan -- despite the fact that Capcom has announced that it is working on both Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the zombie-crunching game.

Whatever happens, we lucky European types should get both versions of the game, as well as a Wii version, which is likely to be substantially different to its next-gen peers.

If you're a flash Japanese-speaking git, you can check out ECGeo, the source of the rumours. Alas, it looks as though we'll have to wait ages for Ressie 5 which, after the sheer awesomeness of RE4, is set to be one of the most anticipated games ever. ...
